Excellent! This is a great idea. I'd love to have representative battle groups for major nations at various eras.

I do notice that (in the Carl Vinson group, at least) there are F/A-18's on all the escorts.

I had some issues with importing these files, which are great thanks.

Solution in this thread:

tm.asp?m=3510072

Not sure if it applies to anyone else or if its just something that is happening with me but if you having issues it might help.

Updated the files. They should import correctly now. No other changes.

Very nice, thanks Kushan!

I had forgotten how potent US carrier task forces really are - 8-10 Aegis ships, with a Perry to run errands.

And then there's the carrier itself...

Just noticed that none of the escorts have any helos aboard. Is that intended?

You can put them anywhere in the "importexport" folder. If you want to put them under the US folder you can. I personally put them in the main folder.

Thanks IWS. If I can ever find the info I would love to do imports for the Cold War to the 2000's. I have the info for most of the carriers and their attached air wing, but I have not yet found a reliable source for the escorts.

Yea, its intended that the escorts don't have helos. I've been running short of free time to do work and really wanted to get the groups as whole done. At some point when I have more time I will go through and add them.

Be advised that these days a carrier strike group would only deploy with 4-5 escorts - normally 1-2 CGs and 3-4 DDGs. Although carriers normally have a destroyer squadron command assigned to them, which includes an average of eight DDGs and FFGs, the DESRON has other taskings besides carrier support, and some ships are undergoing maintenance periods. Also, it is rare to see FFGs deploying with carriers anymore.

Examples (recent Navy deployment announcements):

Expect a lot of changes to the strike groups over this next year. Fleet forces command has decided to set strike groups early in the training cycle and deploy with seven or eight escorts. Over the last ten years you were lucky if you deployed with four, they were seldom from the same desron and hardly any of them stayed with the CVN once in FIFTH Fleet. The CVN and a CG was what you usually saw, no one else. That is changing with more focus right now on sea combat against capable foes (read that however you want to). There will be a lot of shifting but by the end of the year it should be pretty stable.

Ok, I'm confused. I placed the file where it supposed to go when I create a new scenario is when I am running into problems. Normally if I want to place a ship on the map I simply click on editor then go down to "add unit" go to whatever type of unit I want, select it, and then click on the map and it appears at that location, However with the carrier battle groups I have to click on editor, drop down to "import export" highlight that and then import the carrier battle group. I find it and I selected and it says "successfully imported" but it doesn't appear on the scenario map...so my question is how do I get that successfully imported carrier battle group to appear somewhere on the map?

I don't see anything that allows me to select it and place it off the coast of Iceland or wherever my hypothetical scenarios is whereas with individual ships, I just "add unit", "select unit" and click on the map.

Hi Mike

The importer remembers the last place the group was placed so if I remember that file correctly they'll appear off the US Coasts. You would then select the group and use the m (move) command to move it where you would like.

Thanks!

Thanks!...yep! Worked just as advertised. Now to bring those battleground over for an assault on Vladivostok (if I can find that base done) what a game!
