Downing Auxiliaries

Post by linrom »

What's the best way to shoot down PBYs and other Auxiliaries?

--flying some fighters at 100ft on LRCAP mission over enemy airfields

--putting some ship based float planes on CAP

--flying CAP and LRCAP over your own airfields

--sweep enemy airfields at 100ft

There is a whole bunch of Allied Auxiliaries at Clark and Manila and bombing missions cause more OP loses than destroying occasional auxiliary.

Is it worth to put a trained fighter pilot into Petes and fly CAP. Pete has gun rating of 6, but I don't know how the game treats travers and rear guns.

Well, I just would not worry too much about them. The best way is to catch them on the ground with a high DL and then bomb the snot out of them. Otherwise there is a natural attrition that will take care of them. I don't think I can advise that you focus on them too much. Better to worry about those enemy carriers..[;)]

I agree with crsutton.

This has to be very early in the game when allied players or even the AI may chose to use those PBYs for naval bombing, There was another thread recently by some one complaining that they wer too accurate with their bombs and torpedoes.

The point to keep in perspective here is that they are PBY4s of which the Allies have ZERO replacements and nothing in the pool.

They are useful in an active role..ie flying combat missions and taking losses....for a very, very limited time before the squadrons become emptied or the Allied player wisely chooses to pull them out.

Don't focus so much on them and soon enough they will simply go away.

AFB response....

As HansB notes, there are not enough of these to get overly aggressive or you're allied counterpart will end up (nearly) blind (not enough long range nav search capability).

I do love to use these early @PI, make you provide CAP to some of those early invasion groups and limit or defer some of the IJ fighter sweeps or escorts giving the P40s a fighting chance for the first few weeks. After that it's purely hit/run looking for TFs outside of your CAP range. Best defense against this is watch, wait, and bait...if you've got an aggressive PBY AFB you will eventually catch him with a CAP and chew the PBYs up to point he'll need to fall back to nav search only...
