CAP shooting down SS missiles

Post by d0mbo »

Had two planes flying CAP over a taskforce and when I saw some vampires coming in (old SS-2 Styx something type)I ordered them to auto-engage one of them. They were actually able to shoot one down with a sidewinder.

Just wondering if this is a valid/possible in real life tactic?

One of the main purposes of the AIM-54 missile that was used on the F-14 tomcat was to shoot down missiles.

Good to know CAP gives added protection versus missile attack [:)]

Guess it only works for old/slow guided missiles.

Cheers,

In particular supersonic ones such as AS-4 and AS-6
