Bridge Building

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

Bridge Building

Post by Meteor2 »

I have read here in the forum, that building a bridge needs approx. 30 minutes.
That seems (at least for me) very quick. It has to be a bridge, where 40 t panzers can cross and that construction lasst only 30 min. ?
Until now, I have not seen bridge-building equipment (e. g. Bibers), so is the timespan to short or. the possibility itself unrealiistic ?

From what I understand, engineering assets/missions are abstracted and not represented by particular units/vehicles.

Presumably these 30 minute bridge jobs are done by specialized armored mobile bridging vehicle; I have no idea if the timing is realistic.

This level of abstraction seems significant, because in reality presumably every gun on the battlefield would be aimed at a mobile bridging vehicle approaching, or deploying on, a crossing side, but that's not possible in game!

The river Weser (at Rinteln) is 20-30 m wide and has a depth of 1,2 to 5,6 m (lets say an average of 2,5 m).
Thats to much to ford for a Leopard (fording depth of 2,3 m). OK, can dive 4 m after preparation time...
I remember the exercises of Panzer companies to ford the river when I was in the army.

So, maybe the developers have though in depth about river crossing and times.
I will not question this, but at first glance it seems easy in the sim.

For minor rivers beside the Weser, it may be possible, of course.

It's not construction. It's a bridging tank. US call their an AVLB.

ALRIGHT!!! Finally, some combat engineer discussions!!!![:D]

I was a combat engineer with the 3rd Armored Division during my duty in Germany. The very first discussion we had when I joined this project was about the engineering capabilities of the armies vs the game. They listened quietly until I finally wound down. Then they told me, "this is not a combat engineer sim." Okay. I made my points.

As to your comments. The Weser is defined by a maximum/minimum depth and width. Depending on water level conditions, time of year, etc. that can change dramatically. Example: In spring, the water is deeper and the stream is wider because of flooding. In fall, the water is more shallow and the banks are firmer because there is much less water coming from snow melt.

Okay, but chances are high that the river will have some fording opportunities somewhere along it's length.

So, maybe the developers have though in depth about river crossing and times.

We worked on the abstraction until we got it where it seems to work well without specific equipment to be dealt with.

Dear Mad Russian,

That was a very good answer, indeed. [&o]
Very good to know, that you really thought about it.

When we get to the combat engineering capabilities bridging will be one of the things to get right.

Bridging actually comes in multiple flavors.

Huge permanent bridges, like the Bailey Bridge. Mobile assault bridges, that can bridge a small stream in minutes. Mobile assault rafts, that can ferry units over in a longer period.

Launch bridges, bridges on the back of armored vehicles that can drive up and put a bridge down in minutes.

Each of these requires specific equipment to produce.

Good Hunting.

I'm pretty okay with the abstraction of engineering capabilities. But I would like:

-Some advantage for the amphib-capable units (they take 30 minutes to cross, just like a regular bridging unit does).

-Some randomness: Maybe the spread for crossing the river is 15-45 minutes, with a bell curve at 30 being the average. This would take into account accidents, favorable locations, etc. 30 minutes is too neat of a timeframe in a game that tracks action by the minute.

-Some possible delay if the unit crossing is under fire.

amphib-capable units

Remember "amphib-capable" vehicles take time to prepin order for them to actually cross. 30 min is probably to little for that type operation. That said the level of abstraction is currently fine, for a start....

Forgot to mention ribbon bridges in the list of bridging assets. Both sides had them during this time period.
