To get you in the mood for WWIII

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

To get you in the mood for WWIII

Post by deadsunwheel »

War was a series on, what else, warfare produced by the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) in 1983. Part 5 concentrates on what a conventional war in Central Europe might look like. It includes interviews with soldiers on both sides and that luminary of hypothetical World War Three scenarios, General Sir John Hackett. Well worth taking a look at if you are interested in getting into the mindset of the time.

Or read a book "Team Yankee" or "Red Storm" or "Sword Point"

New kindle E-Book called "the Red Effect"

Non World War III book: Ten Thousand by Harold Coyle (it have some interesting battle(s) that occured in Germany)

That will going get me in a right mood to going back to play some RED STORM for another round. : ) Damn, I think I am getting little addicted to Flashpoint RED STORM. [:@]

Der Grenadier - I loved Red Army! Great well written story, too bad it is now so hard to find.

Dogma One- the Red Effect will be purchased shortly, looks good. Thanks for the tip.

To add to the list I would have to put forward First Clash. A story of the Canadian 4th Mech in the first stages of the war. Actually story is a bit strong of a description, more of a manual don't expect a lot of character development. Good read none the less.

Yes Red Army is hard to get. I was lucky to get my copy from a flea market. If you can find a copy get it, its worth every cent.

I have been skulking around second hand stores for a while looking for that one as well. I hear it mainly concentrates on the war at sea. Is that correct?

yep, not much dialogue neither, iirc.
Gen. Montgomery: "Your men don't salute much."
Gen. Freyberg: "Well, if you wave at them they'll usually wave back."

Red Effect is excellent BTW, I'm currently reading the Black Effect, which is book 2, and it's superb. Lots of ideas for scenarios in it.

I just picked up Coyle's 'Bright Star'. Looking forward to it after having just finished Red Storm Rising and Tin Soldiers.

Team Yankee, Chieftans, RSR, and both World War III books by General Sir John Hackett. Have not read Red Army by Ralph Peters yet.

I read "Red Army" right before doing the Soviet campaign. It's different. I liked it.

After doing 25 scenarios and writing 3 pages about each I thought about turning that into a book. I mean, it's already about a fourth done at the moment. [:D]

Do it MR! Heaven knows there has been a precious shortage of new Cold War gone hot fiction these days. Though for the life of me I can't imagine why [;)]

Try amazon. But yes, it is primarily naval but there are a lot of land sequences as well. The cool thing is that the war is taking place in multiple theaters...not just Europe. NATO operating in the med against Syria and Egypt, Japan fighting in the pacific, and a fight in the Caucasus and Hungary to secure the WP southern flank

It wouldn't surprise me to see those same theaters show up in no less than expansions/scenario - map packs.

Not to mention the Artic Circle free for all!
