Their combat effectiveness is about on par with a fishing boat (an unarmed fishing boat).

Jet...man your not even given the dutch lads a fight'n chance! Have had some (small) success with these guys. Keys:

- attack at night. Low moonlight is best
- rotate leaders. Game starts you with "frank burns" types in charge

Good advice chicago!

Rotate leaders -- check! Not much help there, though.

Night, moon light -- check! I must remember to pass that on to my Most Worthy Opponent; being a most obliging sort of fellow, I'm quite certain he will now refrain from any invasions during the day.

I have had moderate, spotty, luck with them and the PT's in Manila too.

The moment they cross swords with a combat surface TF they are usually toast, but if you get a night engagement with a naked transport TF they can produce multiple torpedo hits against APs and AKs.

I'd like to think that running them into an invasion beach hex after the landing starts plays havoc with the opponent's timetable -- LCU's half unloaded and the convoy takes off because of the presence of the little MBT's.

I have low expectations with them, so maybe anything positive that happens is frosting on the cake.

I also set them to "Direct" and "Absolute" on the routing options screen, and always try to assign a commander that has a excess amounts of testicular fortitude.

there is a technical term for those who confuse the opinions of an author's characters for the opinions of the author.
the term is IDIOT.

yea...ok. The technique is be close, 1-3 hexes away (mission speed) so the PTs/MTBs show up during the night phase for combat and not during the daylight. As Feltan noted, use most direct route to raise chances you don't get delayed and assure arrival under dark...or get cut to pieces at 19,000 yards with absolutely no chance to attack (PT/MTBs launch torps from about 2000 or less yards I believe) in the daylight as per your experience above.

Both good suggestions, but my gripe has to deal with the quality of the raw materials available to work with, not the tactics used. I too have had much success with US PT boats using the posted tactics/strategies; these successes, though not universal, are frequent enough to cause my opponents pause. I despair though with the total lack of success using either Philippine PT boats or Dutch MTBs. The battle summaries listed don't reflect this, but if the respective replays are to be believed, my Dutch MTBs did not fire a single torpedo or gun despite having closed to within 2000 yards of a slow, fat AKL; heck, the skippers did not even draw their sidearms! I felt like a Polish Calvary Officer charging German Panzers, sabre drawn and Honor Intact!

As indicated in my first line, I am simply venting.

The Phillipino PT boats can be just as vexing.

They have no decent commanders to place in them to ensure they have the backbone to make a charge.

I typically team them with the US boats with a US commander for the TF.

These were both daytime surface attacks vs ships with decent guns. Even the Japanese merchants have PT killing guns. What did you expect? PT and MTB boats are meant for night time attacks in very low moonlight. Use them this way and you will get results-especially vs merchant ships. Dutch PTs don't get very good commanders and never get radar but they have working torpedoes in 1942-unlike American PTs, and can do some damage.

You get the sighting and engagement range down to 1,000-2,000 yards and see what these boats can do. But that is not going to happen in daylight.

Invasions all have day and night phases. Make sure to set you PTs to mission speed, reaction range 1 and to retire after combat. Best to move them out of the invasion hex and attack from another base so that they will not get trapped into a daylight fight. If you have some planes around. (Not easy with the Allies in 41-42) put some naval search planes up at night and day to keep the detection level of the enemy TF at a higher level.

Later in the war Radar equipped PTs with working torpedoes working in conjunction with radar equipped night patrol planes can be a beautiful sight to behold.

If I recall, I damaged two CAs with PT torpedoes around the PI in the first week of the war. But that was over 1,200 turns ago so it is hard to remember.

In middle of 42 I have pt's based at port Moresby and they have turned around numerous attempts by the IJN to attack the base. At night of course.

Yes Alice, Dutch MTBs really are that bad. I don't care what Mildred says! I would be better off leaving them tied up in port so that when THAT day comes the crews can run into the jungle and join the resistance! Maybe.

BTW, this makes five engagements where the Dutch MTBs failed to fire a single gun or torpedo.

My Philippine PT boats seemed to have had no problem in these conditions; but, I suppose you are right, I should wait to deploy my Dutch MTBs till my opponent attacks during ideal conditions...

Before they get radar PTs of any nationality are often toast if they run into IJ warships. I can't say I have any experience with using PTs later in the war so I can't comment on what happens when they do have radar.

I did have one game, where the PI PTs attacked at night AND in low moonlight in Dec and Jan against a couple of IJ Amphib forces escorted by DD's and (at some cost, 3 of 4 PTs sunk) managed to sink or seriously damage 3 IJ DDs, a DMS and 3 transports.

I've had an occasional success with the MTBs that start in Hong Kong too.

But the Dutch MTBs have never seemed to have accomplish anything in the game. IRL, some of them sailed through the Badoeng Strait while a battle was raging between two different Allied Surf TFs and two different IJN Amphib TFs, and claimed not to have seen or heard a thing...NOT their finest hour.

Simply put, if PT boats engage in disadvantageous circumstances you can expect disadvantageous results. The game was programmed that way.
