[FIXED B573] Tanker troubles

Post by Gunner98 »

Playing 'Op Allied Force' which uses a couple CVBGs. Set up one Alpha strike which all went well except for the tanker support. Two issues really:

1) A/C who were almost Winchester refused the RTB order and went to the tanker instead - fair enough if they need gas- but then they re-engaged on their original mission. Requires constant monitoring and is a PITA

2) The real problem is that the S-3 Vikings that were on the Tanker mission dispensed so much fuel that they ran out themselves and crashed!

So out of this there are three things to fix:

1) A/C on RTB orders should only tank up enough to get home
2) RTB should mean RTB with perhaps a pit stop if needed
3) A/C on Tanker mission should hold onto enough gas to get them home

Applicable to any scenario. I set up tanker support mission in Canary scenario.
Those refueling during rtb forget their rtb Order.
So far managed to get the tankers safely hone but that's because I ordered them to go back manually.

I'll let you know - good reason to go back and try this scenario again [;)]

On first blush, the tanker logic seems to be working much better.  Only about 30 min into the game but so far things are looking good.  I have AAW ptl missions backed up by S-3s, and the Ftrs RTB rather than refuel when Winchester.  The logic is not perfect, had one guy with 1x Aim-7 remaining and about 2/3rds of a tank get thirsty and had to Un-assign him so he could get back into the fight and fire off his last missile before going directly home.  I'm not sure if that's a problem or just tactics so am not fussed on it.

Will be making some bombing runs shortly to test things a bit more.

When I have a chance I'll get back to working on my Aardvark's revenge scenario.  In that one the Vark's will have to tank mid way between Canada and Iceland, once again just before or after their run and then a 3rd time before they arrive in Scotland.  The supporting fighters and Weasels will have a lot more tanking to do.

Great work on this one.

ORIGINAL: Sunburn

Is this happening in Build 562+ ?

I recently experienced some problems in Op Allied Force with the S-3 Vikings running out of fuel (problem #2 in the OP) on build 562. I did not have any issues with RTB aircraft going instead for a tanker - at least with non-tanker aircraft.

I noticed that the S-3s would basically deplete themselves of fuel and would often then attempt to refuel from one another, even though their mission doctrine specified no refueling. I ended up losing a couple trying to RTB to the Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). It sounds like problem #2 in the OP, but confined to refueling aircraft.

The issue was confined to the S-3 Vikings assigned to the "REFUEL South" mission. The RAF VC.10 K.4's assigned to mission "REFUEL West" worked beautifully. The two differences with REFUEL West are that only a single squadron from a single point of origin was assigned, and their loitering station was quite close to their home base at Aviano.

See attached save file. Note: I changed the extension on the attached save file from .save to .txt in order to upload it. Take a look at Tiger #3 over central Albania - it has reached bingo fuel and is attempting to refuel instead of RTB'ing.

Let me know if other saves, etc. would help.

Thanks!

Install the update. Many refueling issues were addressed in an earlier update and rolled into this one.

Thanks Mike.

Build 568 became available at the tail-end of my first play-through of the scenario. I'll try it with a fresh start and will report back.
