That "AH" Moment

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

That "AH" Moment

Post by Mad Russian »

Over the course of the game development there have several "AH" moments for me.

* Hinds come in waves and my 'normal' movement patterns lie in shambles on the map.
* Steve...HELLO!!! BLOW THE BRIDGES!!!!
* What is that thing again? A Jaguar what????
* Hey, those WG 'Speed Bump' Territorial Army units are taking my attack apart and handing the pieces back to me!
* T-80's are far from the toothless paper tigers they were in FPG!!! WOW....don't let them get close!
* What are those funny yellow and black symbols on the map? Get my chemical officer up here NOW!
* I used to have an HQ over in those woods before that air attack!
* The AI crossed the river where??!!??
* Can't believe the AI just ambushed me!
* The AI went to the same spot on the map 3 separate times before it finally took that objective...WOW!!
* Man, the West Germans fight HARD!
* The Brits are really at a disadvantage. Wasn't ready for that to happen...

These are just some of the more memorable moments during testing and development. I'm sure you'll have your own "AH" moments.

Good Hunting.

I don't no about "AH" moments, but I've had a number of "oh #$%@" moments when testing at times.

Yeah, why the heck is Blackhorse attacking across the river. And then: my regimental HQ couldn't stave off that attack. Whose second in command, by the way?

I had a good AH-64 moment when 2 Apaches took out 14 T-80s in a couple of turns :)
Overall, the games seems really good, and looks good as well. I'm looking forwards to WWII scenarios.

:) The 1st time those Hinds popped up in the tutorial was one of those. I had another name for the scenario at that point, "The death ride of the 1st Infantry".

In the 3rd Red Banner Slam scenario having a BRDM-2 Recce unit move into the same spot as two Dutch motorized infantry platoons and then have my artillery drop three rounds of fire on their heads! One BRDM-2 knocked out but 7 NATO runners went down with them. Brave, near suicidal boys of the Soviet reconnaissance forces. Reminds me of Ralph Peter's Red Army.

It's better than that. Those NATO forces aren't Dutch. They are West German. More than likely from the Territorial Army.

They fight harder than any of the other NATO forces in the game. At least in the battles I've played.

Good Hunting.

Just like the player, the AI at times can go rumblin' and stumblin' into their own fire.

But I thought my infallible intelligence services said that this sector was covered by the I Netherlands Corp!?

It is good to see some units running too fast into the rolling thunder. For the record FSCC was handling the fire missions.

Your intelligence service was half right. It is the I Netherlands Corps AO but there is a HUGE difference between West German troops and Dutch troops.

I'd blame those boys in the Fire Control Center too if it was me! [;)]

My "Ah" moments:
  • The 2S6 is to be feared by ground and air alike, it is now a high priority target IMO.
  • An ICM barrage can make short work of traffic bottlenecked at an obstacle, not enough of it though.
  • Move AT assets once spotted!!
  • There is no EM-50 UAV in the game. How is a fun loving GI supposed to have fun in Czechoslovokia?? Guess I'll just go to Wisconsin instead. [:'(]

just had a near medieval end battle in 'time to Dance' T-80s and Abrams hunting each other in a built up area and all combat at under 500m. Awesome.

OldSarge,

We do have special codes for Unmanned air platforms and a few other items that aren't active right now but we hope to turn on over time as new features are added with new version of the game. Having some air recon and UAV flights would be cool.

In fairness, they never referred to the vehicle as a UAV in the movie..[:)]

I had a Decisive Victory until this Soviet tank company showed up and attacked a rear area HQ complex I had.

I thought I was being smart by keeping all my HQ's in the same area. Worked out real well until Soviet tanks showed up.

This was more of an OUCH moment.

Good Hunting.
