Air Tutorial for beginners

Post by spelk »

Just started a write up of the Air Tutorial (which seems popular with folks) - I try to explain the process of creating form up points, and inactive empty missions, so you can schedule the air wing waves onto the target..

Hi spelk,

Thanks for the great guide [&o]

I have tried to mirror your missions but my form up/loiter mission doesn't really work, as soon as the F14's are airborne they go for the enemy. How do you control that?

Thanks in advance.

maybe try having their radar passive until you get them all in the air? do you have them attacking non hostile targets to take advantage of their long range radar? the tutorial even mentions to have them do that instead of waiting until you identify. when I first started playing this scenario I would launch all available tomcats but I realized that by time they all got in the air the threat was gone. so I only send up 6 now. might have to finish off one or two bogeys with your guns but that's no big deal.

Yes have tried that. But maybe "Support" is the wrong mission type. They attack as soon they are airborne. I will try some different mission types :)

I believe you will have to launch them while the mission is inactive. there is currently a problem with aircraft ignoring patrol areas. see here-->

There is an option in the mission editor to "investigate contacts outside of patrol zone". Perhaps that's it? I don't have the game in front of me.

When I tried the air tutorial, it was the last of the three I did, because it was also the most intimidating.

I basically just set up a box of RPs around the enemy base and launched several generic missions. Lost three planes in exchange for 900 points. My biggest mistake was the ground-strike waves, where I made the mistakes of both concentrating too much on the aircraft shelters and tried to take out too many of them with too few planes. Still knocked down three of them and a whole lot of SAMs.
