Stuka escort

Is it just me or does the escort of a Stuka formation go down with them when bombing but not up again when the raise to their initial level?
At least I saw that the Stukas on their way back were high on the ordered altitude again while the escorts were low.
In case there is really something wrong, any ideas for a work-around?

Put the fighters in a seperate group, e.g. fighter sweep with the same target as the bombers. Kepp arrival time at target in sync, and the fighters will engage enemy fighters that show up.
