Noob Question 9 - PBEM vs Server

I have had a server game which seems to have 'broken'.
(Its my turn, but I can't load the turn, it returns some error message.)
I notice from the AARs that people talk about 'sending' turns, suggesting many people are using PBEM.
Are the server games systematically problematic?
