Japanese withdrawals

Post by Chris21wen »

I've just noticed that between Mar and July 1944 the Japanese navy is due to withdraw 44 air groups of various sizes. Could anyone tell me why. If you do this it will virtually wipe out all naval shore based a/c.

I don't know the exact history about it, but they were probably preparing their carrier forces for what eventually became the Battle of the Philippine Sea. The KB had been licking its wounds and rebuilding since the end of 42 and they were preparing to engage US forces when they went for the Marianas. I suspect part of that build up involved stripping shore based air units of aircraft and personnel.
