Does the AI learn from previous games?

Post by derhexer »

I've noticed something curious. When I play certain scenarios I tend do certain things that seem reasonable. For example, if I'm playing the Allies in the May, 1942, scenario, I will send convoys to make sure the island chain of Johnston-Palmyra-Christmas-Canton-Pago Pago-Suva is supplied, replace the pacific Fleet commander w/Nimitz, send the subs at Perth out to sink Japanese shipping near Borneo, Hong Kong, etc., and send subs from pearl to sink shipping near Japan, etc.

After a while I get tired of it, delete all the files in the Save folder, and do other things (yes, there is a life outside WiTP-AE!)

A few months later I go back, start the scenario, and there are convoys headed toward Johnston, etc., Nimitz at the Pacific Fleet HQ, and subs headed from Perth toward Malaysia and DEI.

That's just one example, there are others.

Can someone explain this?

No, the AI does not learn from previous games. We're not making SkyNet here.

Does that scenario have multiple AI scripts? If so, when you started a new game the scenario may have started with a different AI "plan" from the last time you played, giving you the impression that it has you figured out.

It doesn't. Many games have multiple AI scripts and one will be picked at random at the start of a scenario. This randomizes the AI's behavior.

So, no. We have not created a piece of learning software.

If we had, I think we should have gotten more money for it.
