A bit of Wargaming History

Post by Dili »

From this interesting blog a piece about H.G.Wells wargaming

http://www.isegoria.net/2013/08/funny-little-wars/

and

Robert Louis Stevenson wargaming:

http://www-personal.umich.edu/~beattie/ ... stext.html

Notice the poem at the end, an ode to the lead soldier:
For certain soldiers lately dead

Our reverent dirge shall here be said.

Them, when their martial leader called,

No dread preparative appalled;

But leaden-hearted, leaden-heeled,

I marked them steadfast in the field.

Death grimly sided with the foe,

And smote each leaden hero low.

Proudly they perished, one by one:

The dread Pea-cannon’s work was done!

O not for them the tears we shed,

Consigned to their congenial lead;

But while unmoved their sleep they take,

We mourn for their dear Captain’s sake,

For their dear Captain, who shall smart

Both in his pocket and his heart,

Who saw his heroes shed their gore

And lacked a shilling to buy more!

Now about a poem to the pixel soldier?

Ode to a Green Blip

I set my fleet of ships aloose
A tiny blip of chartreuse
It bravely sails a sea of light
Azure but pure not quite
Stained with polygons of black
It sallies forth adorned with might
I wonder when we may see her back

Night falls, the sea turns black
I fret and pace and fume
Wishing the day to soon resume
At last, my turn! My turn has come!
Now’s the time for me to learn
Whether my foe is smart or dumb
My pulse races as I yearn
My answer now to discern

What ho! A pair of blips of angry red
Too near, so near my blip of green
Oh no! I am filled with dread
Battle Royal as none have ever seen
My blip of green has all gone dead

That sea of blue is now unbroken
Save all but those dark frames
I fear but know what goes unspoken
I suffer that gravest of shames
I shall no longer play these silly games

I seem to be pretty good at altering other people's art. Here's a few revisions to your poem: [:D]

Green vs. Red

I set my fleet of ships aloose
A tiny blip of electric chartreuse
It bravely sails a sea of blue
Manned by tiny pixel crews
It sallies forth adorned with might
And sails into the dead of night.

I click the arrow to end my turn
I save and send then wait and yearn
At last, the turn! the turn has come!
I load the game. The turn is run.
Finally the surface combat check
Is that a red blip in my hex!?

Up pops the surface action screen
The enemy commander crosses my "T"
I've never seen such utter bunk
As one by one my ships are sunk
How can I lose so many boats
I cry "bull shit! This game is broke!"

As turn by turn the game goes by
I really must sit and wonder why
A full grown man would suffer such shame
And keep on playing such silly games
Question it not. I'll never learn
Just hurry up and send the turn

And when the game has reached its end
I'll probably post and play again
When all is finished, said and done
It really is a lot of fun
Win or loose, it bothers me not
I really like this game a lot

EDIT: Grammar...

Dear Gary, you went far, far beyond the call of duty there. If somehow I inspired you, I am forever grateful to (myself). But that was outstanding. Excellent job!

I just can't leave it there. Gary's blown my doors off and then proceeded to establish himself as the poet laureate of the WitP-AE forum. All hail Gary!

Please ignore this if you are done with it. Gary, you're killing me! That was so good I cannot contain myself. I will forever be happy to play Grant to your Sherman, or much more likely Sherman to your Grant.

I suck at strategy, but at least maybe I make up for it elsewhere! [:D]

Thanks for the compliments. Like most on the AE forum you are a true gent! [:)]

Okay, I'll stop when the wine puts me down. Until then, Gary, where have you been during everyone's life? What have you been doing before it came to you to rock our world? "As turn by turn the game goes by, I really must sit and wonder why?" Are you kidding me? How did Lewis Carroll do what he did without you? Whose brain did Shakespeare bounce his ideas off if not yours? You say you have spent your life productively, but I've not heard your name. Stop concealing your light under a blanket.

Honestly, I'm good for a few good posts out of 4955. But to keep it realistic, it's not really Shelley or Keats. Just a bit of fun. I prefer to keep it that way. Wish I could be a Bobby Frost but I'd ham it up after 3 or 4 tries, guaranteed. [:o] Heck this is my first poetic attempt in probably 10 years.
