On the PT attack failure - I suspect facing 40-odd 5" guns and 20 or so 5.9" guns had something to do with the decision to withdraw.

On the IJA losses near Kalgoorlie - a disproportionate number of support troops and guns were destroyed. Somewhere in the dice rolls for your units I suspect your tanks overran an artillery or mortar unit.

Ramree - I invaded here on August 11th. In less than two months, the base is maxed out and I'm at the gates of Rangoon. Having supplies flow from here has helped.

Horn Island - I see the same 3 CL, 7 DDs here at least once every two days. Probable Fast Transport TF as base is hit by over 100 2e bombers daily with occasional BB TFs. I have 2 CAs and 8 Fletcher DDs now at Portland Roads. Time to raise the ante. [:)]

South Pacific - Besides moving the invasion TFs up from Vava'u, transports are busy moving troops up from Pago Pago and Vava'u area. Some are going to Noumea and Brisbane to get them together as I had place troops all over to keep under stacking limits.

Notes:
Burma - Nick reports his new defense line is set.
Rangoon has 28 LCUs, 69900/596/668 and 99 fighters & 12 bombers
Pegu has 7 LCUs, 34600/336/151 and no planes.
Plans are to move into both bases and focus on capturing Pegu first. Most of my troops are over 50 prep level to low 60s. Of course, I have a Corp and Command HQ prepping for BOTH bases. I have to mention this here as many players know how much I harp on this as an Allied player. Need that extra 90% bonus to win these battles.
Need to gain air superiority, bomb his LI to nothing to stop further supply production, and stop and ships from unloading supplies. Bassien has not been captured yet, Prome has AF at 3(7) and has BF and construction units marching towards it, Toungoo is at 4(7) and is close to level 5. Troops are still marching through the jungle from Imphal area to get down here. Multiple units coming from Ramree. To be honest, I was expecting a more forward defense around Prome and Toungoo. This will give me experience on how to conduct a siege as Allies late in game. Stay tuned!!

BC Repulse is at Sydney along with two old American BBs and 2 CAs for overdue upgrades. Those four ships are upgrading right now. Since she would not upgrade, I sent a PM to MichaelM. This is his reply...
Tonnage. Ship too big to fit in shipyard as upgrade causes some float damage. If no float damage, tonnage is still important but can be affected by spare shipyard capacity, naval support, and other tenders present.

Michael

Looks like she will head to USA with TKs (14 knot) that are there unloading fuel.

Post by ny59giants »

OPPONENT WANTED!!

No, not for this game. [:D]

In about a month or so, I hope to see Reluctant Admiral version 6.0 be finished. John 3rd has to wait until middle of August for his two young boys to go back to school and his wife (she works part time at school) to get it done. This version will have the main changes from the prior versions in having the cargo capacity decreased by 1/3 like you find in DBB-C. Something I favor.

I started a RA game as Allies vs DivPac88 and that ended suddenly when he went back into hospital for his cancer. He was able to play some afterwards against somebody else before his death. I then started another RA PBEM as Japan vs Mike Solli, but the military took him away.

I have played both sides and will be looking for somebody to play Japan. I'm finding I like the Allied micro-management that is needed to launch counter attacks and invasions against a prepared opponent. Hopefully, my lessons in western Australia in this game will help me out in my next game. [:D] You will see the House Rules (HR) in the first few pages of this AAR that we can modify. The game will not get started for one to two months, but want to get an opponent lined up before RA is done. Send me a PM if interested.

12th - Landings!!
13th - Empty base becomes Allies!! 33 Nells and 2 Kates attack shipping without success at night (100% moonlight).

Engineering:

Notes:
Colombo - 14 Emily on night attack get a hit on O21 on 13th (slight damage). 15 Nells hit nothing.

I feel with the disaster in Western Australia that I need to rush forward with my attacks in Solomons, but right now am going to try to aim for isolation of Rabaul and be up some of the northern coast of New Guinea by beginning of '44.

Rangoon siege begins!!
Frank shows up for first time over Rangoon. Good for Japan, not Allies. [:(]

Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft; If odds are underlined, they are the Allies; BG = Bomber Group of 48 planes (4 x 12 bomber squadrons); FG fighter group = 25 fighter planes if American

Subs:
KXIV sinks a PB NW of Tavoy

CVs:
Mine are returning to Luganville.
KB and Company are ???
INTEL reports indicate that CV Kaga is at Port Hedland. [:)]

Burma:
Rangoon -
14th - 6 Nick and 57 Tojo on CAP vs first sweep by 20 P-38s with 30 Hurricanes on LRCAP. I lose 6 to his 2. 15 P-40N1 then sweep in and I lose another 5 planes (mostly Hurricanes) vs 7 for Japan. Thankfully, I get the Spitfire VIII next month for my Brits. [:)] Finally, the 4e bombers make their appearance as 51 B-24s and 27 Liberator IIs arrive to hit the AF. They easily push past the 14 Tojo. Five smaller raids with 9 B-24 each follow. Then, the 'hungover' fighter groups sweep - 50 P-38s, 22 P-51s, 37 P-40s, 25 P-38s. [:@] [&:] All the troops arrive.
15th - 15 Hurricanes (LRCAP) and 9 P-40N1s face off vs 73 George, 18 Tojo, and 69 FRANKS. I lose 3 P-40s for no Japanese. The second sweep of 50 P-38s and 34 Hellcats does better, but I lose 10 for 7. The 25 P-40N25s escorting in bombers with 13 Hurricanes still on LRCAP do there job of keeping his fighters off my 6 Blenheim and 33 B-25s. I lose another 14 for only 1 Frank. No fighters are left to face his 100 strong CAP/LRCAP as 10 of 46 bombers (Blenheim, Wellington, and Liberator) are shot down. Another 9 of 24 Blenheim are shot down in next two strikes. CAP/LRCAP is down to just 30 planes as my 4e bombers arrive. Only 1 of 23 B-24 & Wellington are lost. 25 P-40N25 come in with my 24 B-24s and 12 B-25s. I lose 1 for 1. Then, 2 of 24 B-24s are lost (1 in A2A and 1 to flak). Then, a series of small strikes - 12 B-25, 12 B-24, 12 B-24, 12 B-24, 12 B-25. In what appears to be a developing pattern, more fighters come in to sweep AFTER the bombers - 25 P-38, 35 P-38, 22 P-40N1, 16 P-40N1, 19 P-51A. 6 DDs followed by 2CA, CL bombard my troops.
See next posting for ground bb results and further explanation.

QUESTION - For the more experienced players, what will I need to bring in to capture this base??

Disposition:
Pegu - 2893 AV with 1 Chinese Corp (now headed for Rangoon and to gain me control of hexside), 3 Indian and 1 British Division, 50 Tank Bde, 208 Motorized Bde, 3x Armor Rgt. Less than 50 supplies.

1 SE Pegu - 5 LCUs 18800/189/69

Moulmein - AF4 with 80 fighters - 19 LCUs 33100/170/141

Bassien - AF 1(6) no BFs or construction LCUs here yet.

Prome - AF 5(7) with plenty of supplies and fighters.

Toungoo - AF 6(7)

Plans:
Right now, I think the best thing for me to do is further isolate Rangoon. Nick had written that he hadn't seen any AARs with Japan leaving a sizable force, so this will be a first. It is also a first for me. I expect the forts to be at 6, maybe 7. I control land access now. But, he has the sea approaches (brought in 2 CA, CL, and 6 DDs to bombard my troops) and air after last turn although two days worth of AF attacks has AF damage at 100.

Since he retreated more quickly than I thought (I landed at Ramree Island in mid-August), I'm still moving forces south. My BF and construction units are still flowing south. Some are moving down trail from Akyab and across from Ramree while others are coming from Imphal to Dimapur areas.

My current plans are to isolate Rangoon by focusing on the capture of Moulmein, if possible, and the built up of Bassien (once Prome is expanded) and Pegu AFs to isolate the base from seaborne supplies.

Is this what you would do??
If so, how would you do so??
If not, then what??

Thanks!!

Do you have any CAs/CLs in the IO that can bombard Rangoon? You need to kill off some of his artillery and AA for sure!
Short of running him out of supply, including what the units hold, I don't see much chance for an assault for some time.

Why is staying in Rangoon? That makes no sense at all or am I missing something?

He is going to be in trouble if you get some dive and attack bombers into nearby bases. Will be troublesome to evacuate..he might lose the units in Rangoon. it might be a delaying tactic, though...maybe he is running Fast Transport missions there.

Well, I think it's not a bad tactic. Japan can sacrifice few LCUs if that means denying the allies Rangoon (which is the most important base in that region) for some more months. Also without Rangoon the Burma road remains closed...which is a very good news for Japan!

Yeah, but with only 1800 AV its not much of a delay?
