RE: Now without full battle report

Post by mattep74 »

Next turn nothing worthwile mentioning happened really. Torpedoplanes sunk a few merchants and ASW worked well for the allies and not so well for the japanese

Operation Sledgehammer North

Post by mattep74 »

Imagine a wiki site about the attacks
Operation Sledgehammer North was an operation conducted by the American bomber command against japan during the final face of the Pacific war in late September of 1945. The objective was to shut down as many airports as possible and to destroy as many planes on the ground as possible. The main bomber for this operation was the B-52. The targets were the airports near Tokyo and Osaka, but also other airports were targeted. B-29 played a smaller role as their night attacks seems to have less effect than the high altitude daylight raids.

Casualities Japan: 2900+ destroyed on the fields.
Casualities allies: Less than 20 B-29.

Turn was 23-24 September.

----------------------------
In other news, Japanese ship losses are over 600 ships sunk at that date.

I wanted to send a small TF from Pearl Harbor north to the Kurils and then have it bombard The northen coast of Japan and run away. AO included, after sending them away i saw that i forgott to load the AO and i had to send it back

And Seattle and San Fransisco is bombed by japanese subs that launched airplanes even though i have ASW in place

I was wondering when you were going to do AF attacks to try eliminate the CAP and naval bombers. Once the AFs are shut down, the navy can send more DDs in to deal with those pesky "E"s.

I usually send in every CV i have between Iwo and Japanese islands and let them shoot down the enemy bombers for a few turns. this was the first time i went after the airports with every heavy bomber

And yet another turn were the japanese bites the dust

Post by mattep74 »

CV taskforce in the Sea of Japan was jubilant today. They manage to coordinate perfect coordinated strikes and sunk many ships. A captain was overheard saying that the bombing campaign had gone well since they were well inside bomberrange and not many bombers had shown up for a while.

Headquater for the allied Submarine fleet.
Admiral Lockwood: Damnation, three more boats lost the last three days. Now the flyboas get all the glory. DAM YOU E-BOATS, DAM YOU ALL TO HELL!

Second in command: Sir, what are we to do? Tell them all to go back to port?

Lockwood: No, send them ALL out, the japs are bound to run out of ASW-tools soon. You heard me, send them all out on patrol around the Japanese islands.

Japanese HQ:
General in charge of the airforce to Supreme commander: I regrett to inform you that the latest bombing offensive all but destroyed the airports from were our fighters operate. I feel I have let my nation down

Supreme commander to airforcegeneral: We are certain you are doing your best.

Imperial palace:
Emperor chief of staff meeting with the emperor: Sir, these are the latest figures.
Emperor looks down: This cant be true, my generals have said we are taking a heavy toll on their offensive and our losses are minor.
Chief of staff: Sir, look outside. Your cities are all like Tokyo. Our navy is holding its own against the submarines, but how long before torpedoe planes and dive bombers take out those also. We have almost no merchant marine left.
Emperor: I cant give the order to surrender, no allied troops have yet to land on our islands. The people will feel betrayed
Chief of Staff: Sir, if this continue you will not have any people to rule over.

This is the first time i managed to get CV-airplanes to attack in force and result is down below

I generally consider airstrike lucky, if it manages to score ANY hits during attack over 20k, yet if I am reading this correctly - your B-52 attack from 50k, and score hits as if they were attacking from 5k. Could it be bug? Have you tried to set them somewhere lower?
I would like to ask about their pilot statistics, and if you changed accuracy of bombs? That could also indicate, that larger bombs have some form of "splash effect"

Since the B-52 device was created for this scenario, I imagine it was given an accuracy bonus to account for its radar assisted bombsight.
The number of bombs carried by each B-52 is also a factor.
I don't think the game engine has a way of calculating near misses and assigning damage according to how near they were + size of the bomb effect.

I didnt know that you could give such bonuses. I think its because i have so many bombs in the aircraft and the fact that they attack ships that are sitting still in the harbor.

It can also be that since the japanes fighters dont reach that altitude and the highest AA can reach is 37,000 that the game thinks that the aircrafts bombercrew have time to aim.

When i send in bombers at 15,000 and they encounter flak and/or fighters the bombs seem to fall all over the place.

I have fighters doing portattacks at 5 - 10k, and even if they dont encounter opposition they dont seem to hit anything.. I have had B-29s at 7000 over airfields doing damage to the airfield but not to many planes on the ground(1-2 for every raid perhaps)

My conclusion is: No opposition=The game give the bombers time to aim

1st – 10th October
XXIV corps attacks Hong Kong after recon shows opposition light. Heavy bombers like B-52s based in Philipines and on Iwo Jima bombard the defenses for a few days. Resistance is fierce and the town is captured after a week. Unfortunally the IJA retreats and forces XXIV corps to start moving inland. Damage to Hong Kong harbor is 21, airfield is all but closed. Will require lots of repairs before its operational, just like Takao.

Last of the japanese troops on the Philipines are defeated. TD units in need of more troops and weapons.

On Formossa Takao and Kagi are taken. Attacks going on in Taichu, unfortunally troops are in need of rest.

Tankers moving unmolested with or without escort between DEI and Manilla/Singapore. Tankers now en route to Pearl Harbor.

Message from Nimitz to all task force leaders: Stop loosing all these CVEs during invasions. Yes, its better they are hit by kamikazes than transports, but they cost money.

Manilla harbor master: Oh, not another battleship that have to go into drydock. Its full already. Try to get to Singapore, they still have space.

Operation Northen surprise is in motion. Two BBs and a few CLs have left Pearl and gone north to Alaska and have now set course for Kushiro to bombard and make the japanese uneasy.

Post by mattep74 »

On the 13th of October Operation Northen surprise surprised Kushiro at night. Although damage was minimal Japanese hq was stunned.

Transcription of conversation in the HQ October 14 at night(Downfall parodies on youtub:))
Supreme commander: Have the commander of air operations sunk the enemy that bombarded Kushiro yet?
General 1: Uhm, Sir…..
General 2: He claimed he had to few airplanes and couldn’t carry out an effective search or attack.
Silence for a long time
Supreme commander: Can everyone leave the room except commander of Tokyo defence(Hisdorf), admiral Krobs(commander of Northen defence fleet) and general Odl(Chief of staff)
Everyone leaves the room
Supreme commander: IT WAS AN ORDER, recon all over the place to find subs and if we were lucky find taskforces doing stuff like this. It was an order, not a request. WHO do he thinks he is to disobey an order? All you have lied to me, even the special ship squadrons. I am beginning to think that the generals we have left are the scum of the Japanese people and to coward to attack the Americans.
General Odl: Supreme commander, stop insulting our leaders, they are doing everything to stop the attacks
Supreme commander: Does it seem to work? Not a shred of honor. Stalin killed all bad generals, here they are given command and hopefully they do that themselves. What a monstrous betrayal of the Japanese people to have such commanders. Now we all will pay even more in our own blood. I am beginning to think the war is lost.
General Krobs: Its been over since we last Okinawa, remember. We still have lots of special forces remaining and they will take a heavy toll on the Americans when they land
Hisdorf: Sir, we have lost over 10,000 aiplanes in less than two months. Our food supply isn’t as good as it could be.

On Formossa Taichu is captured and the troops got a few days rest before they are moving on.

Northern surprise successful as above. BB taskforce sailing to meet AO taskforce and refuel before heading back to Pearl.

Force at Hong Kong ready to move north.
More small islands secure and airfields constructed.

Late October
XXIV corps recon has shown that Canton is the home of almost three times their numbers. Troops are ordered to wait outside the city for the heavy bombers to soften up the enemy. Reinforcements are embarking in Manilla in the form of the Americal division. Heavy bombers, mostly B-52 strike Canton and when the bombardment began 4 days ago there was 95-100 k troops in the city. Now there are around 70 000. Allied force outside city is 11,000 fighting troops and 20 000 rear area troops.

Joint UK/US allied force steaming for Indochina to take Saigon. UK troops will land to the west and US troops to the east of the city.

CV-fleet in the sea of Japan sail to close to Tokyo and for two days are attacked by lots of Japanese airplanes. Over 1000 is shot out of the sky, but some manage to penetrate the CAP and AA and score hits on CV, CVL and CVE. Task force now steaming back to Guam.

Formossa is almost secure, Japanese pushed back to two areas and the area will be fully American in early November.

Allies have trouble knowing what engineers can be used on new airfields and who that needs to remain were they are.

Score is currently major allied victory

I sent a convoy to give Takao on Formossa supplies. I sent the merchants alone and sent warships in other taskforces there. The warships had mind of their own and was sailing around in other places. Result? Japanese subs jumped the merchants and sunk almost the entire convoy. Two ships remain and they disbanded the task force and anchored.

Canton is ripe for conquest now. The forces around the town are now full and reinforced and they will now attack

Canton is taken. Now the question is where to go from here. March overland to Hangshow and then strike Shanghai from two directions, or send a force north to cut the communication lines between troops in Indochina and the rest of Japanese hold areas
Battle of Formossa ongoing.
Submarines were ordered into Japanese ports to sink ships. They sailed into mines.
Operation against Saigon began as a disaster with several ships sunk by kamikazes that went through the CAP.

Japan seems to get more mines to play with than the Allies, and has a lot more ships that can lay them. Any port that Japan has occupied for more than a day is likely to have some mines.

Most Japanese merchant ships do about 12 kts, or three hexes per phase. I usually park my subs three hexes from the port I am trying to interdict. You have a much better chance of making an attack if the enemy ships end the phase in the same hex rather than just passing through it.

I know, and the game dont tell me if i have mines avalible for subs to lay around japanese bases without me making a mining task force

You have to check what type of mine the subs can use, then go to the Intel screen and look at the troops/equipment pools for that type of mine. Also note the monthly production rate ...

Alll subs i look at can use mk 10 mines, that arent avalible. Its said that they are upgraded to mark 12. I turn on stockpiling and then they say ship already loaded with mines despite it having 0. If no stockpiling then there is no mines in the pool.

Date: 8th November 1945
Place: Manilla
Present: The entire general staff of the pacific
Macarthur: Gentlemen, thanks for coming. This is my plan to bring the Japs to their knees. I call it operation Meteor.
Lights are shut down and Mac turns on a projector.
“This is our target!” Everyone gasp, the target is one of the heaviest defended in Japan. Nagasaki.
“I know, the target seems to be a death trap. But our B-52s have done great work when overcoming Canton and Hong-Kong defenders. They have already been ordered to begin a bombardment.
Admiral Nimitz steps onto the stage
“I have already given general Macarthur approval to this. The forces on the west coast of the USA have begun making themselves ready”.
8th army second in command
“I was sent here just to ask one question. Is there enough transports for both the troops of the 8th army not yet in China and the West coast troops? Have we not lost a great deal of ships”
Macarthur smiles
“Yes, we have, but we have reported three times the numbers sunk as a deception. And I thought long and hard of this objective and if we shouldn’t secure China first. Unfortunally our Chinese connections have said that it would take the entire 8th army just to garrison the cities.”

Japanese intelligence agency
General in charge: So what is this new report you have?”
Chief of staff: “Our agents in Hawaii have sent a report that lots of troop ships have departed, but they seem to have gone empty. Another agent from China town in San Fransisco informs that there seems to have been some sort of mobilization among the troops in the area.”
General in charge: “Hmmm, do you have anything else?”
Chief of staff: Submarines are reporting that the Carrier forces are going back to their bases and recon shows a massive buildup in Manila.”
General: “This points to a large invasion, but were? I will take this to the supreme commander.”

Japanese armed forces hq.
Supreme Commander: “Thank you general for this briefing. The Americans are building quite a force. Where are they going?”

Second in command of forces in China: “My general believe they are going after Shanghai and then Corea.”
Head of command Nagasakiarea: “Nonsense, they lack the power to hold down the bandits in China and invade us at the same time. No general, they are coming for us. They have started bombarding Nagasaki with their heavy bombers, torpedo planes and medium bombers.

Supreme commander “You have all given me fine advice, I however think that Tokyo is the target and they will send in forces and land as close as possible. Nagasaki is just a hoax.

Supreme commander stood at the situation map as the reports came in. Submarines and recon airplanes sent report that a massive fleet was at the moment steaming towards them. The fleet was between Formossa and Okinawa and heading north west. Reports came in a trickle as many airplanes were shot down by the enemy CAP and the submarine screen.

“So, finally, they are coming to invade us. But were?” the commander asked the air. The only thing he did know was that Tokyo was not the target, this time.

“Alert all commands on Kyushu that the enemy is coming. Get the special forces ready.” The supreme commander gave the only command he could based on this information.

On the flagship of the invasion fleet destined for Nagasaki general Macarthur stood beside the captain of the ship.
“Sir, thank you for this honor of being among the first ships to attack the Japanese homeland.” The captain said to the general.

General Macarthur smiled and removed his cigarette “Well, its only fitting that Nevada, California, Tennessee and West Wirginia fire the first shots in the invasion.”

Onboard the wessels men who had served onboard the ships that fateful Sunday in December of 1941 felt that this was their moment of revenge. Ensign James Smith onboard California had been wounded when the first torpedo struck the ship. Rick Hunter, a Nevada farmer before the war and now stationed at one of the heavy guns had been wounded by shrapnel at Pearl Harbor.

The situation on the carriers were the same. Men who had been stationed at various airfields on Hawaii now was ready to drop bombs on the Japanese homeland. There were also men onboard the carriers that had been at Midway, Mariana Turkey shoot, and Okinawa and wanted to end the war.

Among the ground troops there were troops that had been through Overlord and said that this invasion dwarfed Overlord. There were men aboard who had been on Bataan and been lucky to escape, men who fought in the terror on Guadacanal and Tarawa and been wounded. The veterans knew what awaited them when they came ashore, the rookies were mostly afraid.

Reporters from every news organization in USA were present. First radioreport would go out as the first shots were fired at the mainland, because then the Japanese would know where to expect them and the need for secrecy was over.
