rjopel (Allies) vs. nashvillen (Japan) DBB with Stacking Limits (No rjpel)

Post by nashvillen »

Kind Lady and Gentlemen, I have not been very good at AARs in the past and am going to try again. This time, rjopel and I are winding up our latest Scenario 6 (late Feb 1945), and we are going to try another game with some modifications this time. He is a big fan of Da Big Babes and stacking limits. Myself, I don't mind trying anything new, as it provides more challenges and makes one a better player overall.

There will be more posted here as I start to set up the initial Japanese turn, feel free to tell me I am an idiot or offer constructive criticizim. Just don't share anything with rjopel. He is free to do an initial comment, but after that he won't be reading as I will be sharing some things I have learned in my first game with him that I will be implementing in this one also.

There will be some reserved messages after this as I work through the intitial turn, but only after rjopel gets his initial comment in.

Cry Havoc and Let Loose the Dogs of War.

Looking forward to this new game. Many lessons learned over the past 3 years. Will try to find new mistakes to make rather than repeating the old ones.

It is Da Big Babes scenario 28, from day one with one small modification. Ship class 699, Bogue class CVE, has in the stock versions and all others copied from it, including these DBB scenarios, all the AAA weapons on one side of the ship. We (mainly rjopel, some me) researched numerous photo archives on this class of CVE. It does appear that the AAA suites are balanced on this class, so we have corrected that to make it 8x40mm and 14x20mm on each side instead of all on one.

In our current game, his losses of this class of CVE have been enormous. His evaluation of them is that attacks from the unprotected side, especially with torpedoes were very deadly. We hope to fix this anomaly. Still, if he sends them into harms way while his death star is somewhere else, I will keep sinking them even with this fixed. [:D]

I just love attacking, with 2E torpedo bombers at 10-12 hexes, his CVE groups with George escorts. The FM-2s die in droves and the bombers tear up his CVEs. More on that above when I fill in my reserved spaces as I start to work on turn one. So, far, I am only on the initial Industry settings.

Going on vacation with the family for a week, should have some time to work on things during this, but not the turn as they are not on my laptop. Will be discussing my initial goals and future goals for the Japanese. I have learned much from the game we are playing now and am finding the 1945 Japanese position really fun in finding the unprotected flanks of the Allied advances and poking them hard! [:D]

Starting to work this, it is going to take some time as I am squeezing in an hour here and an hour there.

I am debating my targets. I do feel the big hit on not just the old BBs at Pearl is important, but also the damage to the airgroups, especially the limited long range search aircraft, and the facilities there.

In the SRA I am thinking about sealing off Borneo from the PI and Borneo from Singapore with Air HQs at Jolo and Singkawang with Bettys, Nells, and Zeros.

Not having any experience with DBB, what do those of you that have had such experience think? Is this too aggressive? Am I going to get my head handed to me in the first week? rjopel can be a cunning defender.

Bump?

I always feel better about killing the Manila subs. The u.s. will soon be kicking out so many planes, why worry about the ones at pearl?

Understood, the first turn setup takes forever!
