PDU ON upgrades

I have few navy fighter groups that will arrive in autumn `43 and later
When i check upgrade paths in TRACKER i see that those units can only upgrade to A5M, A6M or A7M line(CV capable planes only).
My Question is simple.I read some time ago that upgrading to A6M5 together with having that unit on land will open new upgrade paths to unit (George, Jack, Shinden). Is this true or i will stuck with A6M?

Can anyone that is playing PDU ON and his game is in late `44 can confirm if i will be able to upgrade them to better plane or they are hard coded to A6M and A7M.

If you play PDU=ON you can change the upgrade path. The image is taken from Dawnfall scenario, but
is the same in the stock GC.
