AAR from a sleepy lagoon

Post by Skipjack_ »

My game vs. zeke99 has been going on now for about 9 months - it has been fun and exciting, thought I would share some of the action.

We are playing the Bradk modification (version 1.0 as it turns out), which has been discussed in that thread.

Sleepy Lagoon by Harry James

House rules - 10 point CV TF limit, where US CV=3, Brit,Jap CV/US CVL=2, CVEs=1
Invasions limited to 1 division per TF.
No US invasion of Japan until all of the Phillipines taken.

12/7/41: (Historical 1st turn)
Philippines: Jap airstrikes hit Clark Field, destroying 30+ fighters and 12 B17s on the ground. B17s try a raid on Saigon with little effect - too few bombers available. Japanese invasions take North Luzon, Lagaspi, Davao. 1 US Sub sunk by air raids in Manila port (could have been worse).

Malaysia/Borneo: 27 Buffaloes and 30 Bleinheims destroyed by Jap airstrikes on Singers. Force Z hit but both Prince of Wales (42% damage) and Repulse (81% damage) survive (lucky!). Invasions take Khota Baru, Singora, Kuching and Miri.

Elsewhere: Pearl Harbor is not shown (standard scenario damage applies), Guam and Tarawa are taken.

12/14/41:
Philippines: CA Houston and CL Boise bombard Davao to try and supress enemy air power, unfortunately both take torp hits from G4Ms while attempting to retire ... both survive but will have a challenging time getting to safe waters. At Manila, Fuso-type BBs bombard, then the 56th Div lands and takes the base. Here I really screwed up - SWPac and Asiatic fleet did not get moved and were both destroyed [:@] Well, the SWPac command will come back (without MacArthur) but the Asiatic fleet is gone for good ... I definitely have some rust to shake off ... 48th Div lands at Lingayen, held off initially but the base falls at the end-of-turn ... Nagato/Kongo-type BBs bombard Caygayen ... Negros and Mindoro fall ...

Malaysia/Borneo area: Tarakan and Bangkok fall to troops marching overland ... Hong Kong falls, the British DD stationed there escapes, bombarding Tarakan on the way out ... BB Prince of Wales escapes Singapore towards Java, but BC Repulse is not so lucky - failed to move at the beginning of the turn, she is caught by Netties and sunk ...

Dutch East Indies: Escapees from Manila (AV Langley and DDs, APs, AO, MCS) manage to move down the Macassar straights with the loss of just 1 DD; CL Marblehead and Clemson DDs patrol Menando, 1 DD sunk by G4Ms ... Dutch squadron patrols Kendari and is hammered by KB - several CLs and DDs sunk, only CL DeRuyter and a few DDs stagger out still afloat ... an Engineer unit takes Kendari end-of-turn ... IJA unit (56th Grp) lands on Ambon, takes it end-of-turn.

Elsewhere: South Seas Bde takes Madang amphibiously, 6th lands on Guadalcanal and takes it, Rabaul taken, an SBF lands on Espiritu Santo an takes the undefended base; Ellis Island is taken by the Wake SBF and the South Pacific HQ is lost [:(] ... 4th SBF takes Port Morseby, 18 Wirraways lost ... Milne Bay taken by an Engineer unit, B17s from Australia manage to sink 1 Kagero DD ...

Ugly turn ... need to watch the placement of HQs and squadrons quite carefully going forward ...

Ouch! For what it's worth, IRL that would have been a disaster for the IJN. The Fuso class could not have stood up to the coastal defense guns.

No invasion of Japan until all the Philippines are taken? Does that include Okinawa, which is Japanese soil?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

True - we do have house rules to prevent bombardment of Bataan and Singapore to simulate shore batteries, other bases could also be included (Oahu, U.S. West Coast, probably several Japanese home ports).

Not really discussed. Probably should get that fleshed out pretty soon - my thought would be the home islands (Kagoshima - Sapporo).

12/21/41:

Philippines: 4th IJA Div lands and take Cagayan ... Phil Cav unit in Lingayen continues to resist the 48th IJA Divisions attemps to move inland ...

Malaysia/Borneo area: Jitra taken (2 Indian Bdes cannot hold it) ... Kuantan taken with the help of IJN supply TFs, airstrikes from Singapore did not get any significant hits. I have evacuated the Indian Eng unit and the 2 Indian divisions - with 25 experience and virtually no heavy equipment, they cannot offer much help slowing the Japanese down. The 8th Aus Div, 2 breakdown Ind Bdes and 2 Malay Bdes get to stay in Malaysia and die ...

Dutch East Indies: Balikpapan taken overland ... KB assists with the successful assault on Macassar, Menando and Sorong also taken ... CL Boise takes more bomb hits from G4Ms but continues her escape, Houston and DeRuyter manage to slip away towards Broome ...

Elsewhere: Lae taken overland ...

End of Turn summary: Biggest action for me is all of the TFs I have escaping towards Perth:
- APs with the 1re KNIL Div
- APs with Indian Engineer unit
- SCTFs: Prince of Wales (40% dmg) CA Cornwall (undamaged), CA Houston (64% dmg), CL Boise (89% dmg), CL DeRuyter and Van Ghent DD escort, CL Marblehead and Clemson DD escorts.

Meanwhile in the Central Pacific, U.S. CVs and CAs organize at Palmyra, damaged BBs from Pearl Harbor make for California, 3 U.S. Divisions (27th, 40th, 41st) make their way to the South Pacific.

Good move with the engineering unit. Now the question is, do you want them to expand the bases in Australia or India?

I regard evacuating that engineer unit a high priority - since it is the only one available west of Pearl Harbor. Once it arrives at Perth, it will get directed to New South Wales then to New Caledonia.

12/28/42:
Philippines: Jolo taken.

Java: KB (Akagi, Zuikaka, Shokaku, Hiyru, Soryu) move on Surabaya, with BBs and transports. Airstrikes from Tjilatjap (B17s, Martins) get a few hits on BBs but no asterisks ... the IJA 18th Div lands and takes the base (undefended).

KB2 (Kaga plus CVL/CVEs) moves on Palambang, airstrikes hit Singapore and Batavia. Fuso-type BBs bombard, then the IJA 2nd Div takes the base (undefended). Bali also taken ...

Dutch East Indies: Timor, Sarmi, Mankowari taken.

Australia: Darwin invaded, Gullforce intially holds then retreats to Broome at end-of-turn ...

Burma: Rangoon falls, 17th Indian Division retreats to Mandalay ...

Elsewhere: New Georgia taken ... IJN CLs bombard Wake island, F4Fs airstrikes ineffective ...

End of Turn Summary: Now even more TFs heading for Perth - 2nd and 3rd KNIL Divisions, Gullforce Bn, V1.G-V Squadron (could not fly out Java, so I loaded it on MCS), British TF from Ceylon (BBs Revenge, Royal Sovereign, CA Exeter, CL Enterprise), plus the previously mentioned survivors.

1/4/42:
China: Japanese take Nanning and Changsha. On a hunch I guess the IJA did not leave a garrison at Nanshing, so I order an attack and the Chinese Army retakes it [:)] That won't last long, but it is a small counter action.

Philippines: Samar and Cebu fall ...

Dutch East Indies: KB2 strikes Batavia along with bombardment by Fuso-type BBs, then the base falls to the 56th Grp (undefended) ... Nagato-type BBs bombard Tjilatjap.

Burma: Mandalay and Akyab fall ...

Elsewhere: Jap invasions take Cape Gloucester, Gasmata, Owen Stanley Mountains ... Hollandia taken ...

Australia: Kongo BBs bombard Broome (undefended) ... KB appears off the west coast of Australia, apparently a raid on Perth is in the works ...

End of Turn Summary: All eyes with be on Perth next turn, along with the Ramillies, APs carrying a the Sparrow Bn, Dutch 2nd Div. I am betting this will be a carrier raid only, so I move in B17s, along with the V1.G-V Squadron so I can make some sort of fight of it ... the good news is Revenge, Royal Sovereign, Exeter, CLs Enterprise and Marblehead are safely on their way to Melbourne ... meanwhile U.S. CVs and CAs move towards American Samoa, U.S. LBA being transported towards Fiji.

1/11/42:
China: Hengyang taken.

Philippines: U.S. / Philippine troops under Gen. Emmons (the new SWPAC commander) defend Clark Field sucessfully... Panay bombarded by several SCTF groups made up largely of CLs ...

Malaysia: KB2 launches airstrikes at Kuala Lumpur, followed by bombardment by 2 BB groups (Nagatos and Fusos), then the 1st Amp Bde lands and the base falls. The defenders are forced back to Singapore at the end-of-turn. LBA from Singapore manages 1 hit on a CVL.

Dutch East Indies: Tjilitjap taken overland, Oosthaven taken by the 1/38th Bde ... the fall of Java is complete ...

Burma: Lashio taken ...

Australia: KB arrives off Perth, airstrikes sink APs/ MCS in initial assaults, counter-strikes by Buffaloes / B17s cannot get through the A6M CAP. At the end-of-turn, APs carrying the Gullforce Bn and the 2nd KNIL Division are sunk, sending those units for a swim ...

Elsewhere: Gona and Aitape taken by Japanese troops marching overland, Wewak taken by 1/South Seas Rgt, Bouganville captured by the 5th SBF, Tagula Island taken ...

1/11/42 End-of-turn Summary: Many naval units around Perth, and it will be a nail-biter next turn to see what can slip past KB. My plan is to hope the air power in Perth (augmented with additional B17s) can hit KB with enough sorties that it retires (I have little hope of getting hits from B17s). Meanwhile anything that has reached Perth or is near will get orders to move towards Adelaide at the beginning of next turn (CVTF with Indominable, Hermes and Dorsetshire), SCTF with CA Cornwall CLs Dragon and Durban, a few DDs, CA Houston, Transport TF with the 3rd KNIL Div), other TFs that are not so close will move to Perth at the end-of-turn and hope KB has retired (BB Ramilles with AMC an Empress APs, CL Boise, CL DeRuyter and DDs, AV Langley and the Manila survivors).

1/18/42:
Philippines: Cav Rgt commanded by Gen Short holds off the 48th Inf Div, 65th Ind Bde and one other unit initially, then capitulates at the end-of-turn ... Nagato BBs, Fuso BBs, Yamato + CLs and a CA SCTF bombard Panay, then the 1st Para Bde and the 4th Inf Div land and capture the base.

China: Suichuan captured by the Japanese.

Burma/India: Andaman Islands bombarded by Kongo-type BBs, then taken by the 35th Ind Bde. Japanese troops march on Imphal and Dacca ... 25th Army Eng takes Medan.

Dutch East Indies: Tenimbar Island, Noemfoar Island taken.

Australia: KB remains off Perth, Buffaloes / B17s manage 1 hit (no asterisk), KB strikes TF52 carrying the 3rd KNIL Div, then withdrawls. 1 lucky Lancashire AP does not sink, so the unit survives. [:D] TF52 plus about 5 others scurry into Perth safely during the return to port phase, KB sited off Bali

Elsewhere: Kolombangara taken.

End of Turn Summary: My evacuation had hair-raising moments, but I managed to get the bulk of the available British Fleet to Australia (1 CV, 1 CVL, 3 BB, 3 CA, around 3 CL). Also saved 2 Dutch Rgts and 2 Dutch Divisions. Lost some APs, 1 Dutch Div and 2 AUS Bns, but overall I am pleased. Once the rescued units train up and get to TO&E strength the will be worth something - in their early 42 condition they are just speed bumps for the Japanese blitzkrieg.

I assume this means you successfully landed the Indian engineers. Anything of interest happening in the North Pacific? Since you know where the KB is, it might be time for some counter-moves...

Since the IJN now appears to be moving towards India, it is indeed time for a counter-move ... but I will start with attempting to retake Espiritu Santo after seeing it taken early and before I could get defenders to it ...

Dutch East Indies: Soembawa Island, Flores and Waigen Island taken ...

India: KB2 arrives off Ceylon and strikes the port, sinking 10 MCS ... Kongo-type BBs bombard Tricomolee ...

South Pacific: Jap LBA strikes New Caledonia from Espiritu Santo, U.S. P40s offer modest resistance ... then U.S. CVs airstrike Espiritu and U.S. CAs bombard ... B5Ns counter-strike, breaking thru the F4F CAP but get no hits ...

2/1/42:
Dutch East Indies: Moratai taken ...

Australia: Cloncurry taken by Jap Bde moving overland ...

China: Kweilen taken, Nanhsiung retaken ... the IJA is really rolling up the Chinese in quick order ...

South Pacific: Airstrikes exchanged between Noumea and Espiritu ... Admiralty Islands taken by a SBF unit ... Rennell Island taken ...

Central Pacific: Wake Island taken by the 48th Inf Div ...

India: Jap Transport TFs with many APs and AVs moves on Calcutta, airstrikes from British and Dutch squadrons get hits (sinking 1 AV, a Kamikawa-type, I believe) forcing the first TF to retire ... KB stands off near Akyab and port strikes Calcutta, sinking 4 MCS ... Allied airstrikes hit KB, showing 2 big hits on CVs (but no sinkings), could have been Akagi and Soryu ... finally the 1/5th Bde lands but cannot take Calcutta, the 18th U.K. Div holds ...

Next, KB2 moves on Visagapatnam, launching airstrikes, then Kongo-type BBs bombard. Finally the 4th IJA Div lands and drives of the 9th Ind Div, taking the base. Also, Jorhat falls to overland attack ...

In the latest version, India is almost impossible to hold against an aggressive Japanese player. The losses you've inflicted are actually pretty good.

I agree, getting some hits from LBA on Japanese carriers was pretty nice. A concentrated attack by Japanese naval and air forces cannot long be held off - the ground troops available just are too poor early on.

2/8/42:
Malaysia: Singapore holds off another ground assault ...

Dutch East Indies: Halmahara and Biak taken ...

Australia: Jap troops march on Cairns ...

South Pacific: Buka Island taken ... P40s strike Espiritu, neither side gains the upper hand, the the USN launches an amphib assault - BB and CA TFs bombard, CV TF airstrikes the 3rd SBF defender, the the ground troops land - the 27th U.S. Div, 8th NZ Bde, finally the 14th NZ Bde. But the SBF holds the base [:(]

India: KB airstrikes Calcutta, the a 7-BB TF bombards, Allied airstrikes from Ranchi manage to damage 1 BB. Dacca bombarded by a CA TF. At the end-of-turn, Dacca is attacked and falls, the defending Indian Division surrenders ...

2/15/42:
South Pacific: Warhawks and Hurricanes on Noumea duel with Jap LBA from Espiritu Santo (Ki-27s and Ki-51s), then Hudsons hit Espiritu ... during the movement phase, a U.S. SC TF (the BB Colorado plus CAs) bombard Espiritu, U.S. CVs launch airstrikes, then the 40th U.S. Inf Div lands plus supplies - this plus the troops previously landed manage to take the base. End-of-turn an I-boat exacts a cost, sinking the CA Cornwall returning to Fiji ...

Also Green Island and D'entrantaux taken ...

India: IJN begins the turn concentrated in the Andaman Islands ... in the movement phase a BB TF and a CA TF bombard Calcutta. No airstrikes since all allied squadrons have been withdrawn to Ceylon. First the 18th IJA Inf Div lands but the base holds, then a Bde lands (might have been the 1/5 Inf Bde) and Calcutta falls [:(] The 18th U.K. Div surrenders, the 7th Arm Bde retreats to Diampur.

Malaysia: KB strikes Singapore defenders ...

Australia: IJN Transport TF slips into Cairns and lands the 48th IJA Inf Div, which takes the base, the Aus Bde and Dutch Rgt defending fall back to Townsville ...

3/8/42:
Philippines: 26th Cav Rgt finally surrenders in Lingayen ...

Malaysia: Gen Mutaguchi and the 25th Army conclude their Malaya operation by forcing the surrender of the remaining troops in Singapore ...

Australia: Townsville falls, the 48th IJA Div plus a Bde quickly overcome the 2 Aus Bdes and 2 Dutch Rgts defending, which retreat to Rockhampton ... Then KB appears off Townsville and launches airstrikes on Rockhampton - a counter-strike by B-17s manages to sink a CVL [:D] (believe it was Ryujo).

Elsewhere: Noumea goes to airfield size 5 thanks to the 3rd Corps Ind Engineer. I have added the 30th Aus Bde and the Blackforce Rgt to the RIMa-NC Rgt defenders, so hopefully I can hold it. U.S./N.Z. attempts to mop up Espirtu Santo still unsuccesful ...

End-of-turn Summary: With SIGINT pointing to continued IJN support for the takeover of southern Australia, the Allies consider naval support of the beleaguered group defenders. Available: TF50 (Halsey) with the CVs Yorktown, Enterprise and Lexington; TF51 (Spruance) with the CVs Saratoga and Indominable and the CVL Hermes, TF52 (Vadm Phillips) with the BBs Colorado, Royal Sovereign and Revenge plus 3 CAS, 4 CLS and 3 DDS; and TF 57 (Radm Crace) commands 4 CAs, 5 CLs and 10 DDs. Also the BB Prince of Wales (28% damage) plus some DDs/DEs are available in Sydney. Nimitz decides to send these forces to Rockhampton and hope the help of Allied LBA will allow for success in stopping the Japanese offensive - or at least a draw (it will require some luck).

Oh, where are the Powerpuff Girls when you need them?

Do you have a house rule about stationing a bombardment force permanently in a contested port?
