All German rail lines damaged?

Post by smokindave34 »

Is this the expected result for German rail once Berlin is under siege? I don't remember this occurring in my previous game when my frontline was this small.

It looks like the rail line at Magdeburg is the only one going off the left edge of the map. And since I'm next to it I block its use.

It would explain why the game ends (should it?) once I take Magdeburg in the next turn....
I have a save.

Yes, it's probably because of Magdeburg, not Berlin. Magdeburg is your permanent supply source. A consequence of using a classical board game solution, without the flexibility of re-routing supply. After all, once the Soviets reach "end of the world" at the edge of the map, strange things are bound to happen.

well that's a bit of a let down. Although Dave might be happy it's over I really wanted to get to Berlin. So either we back off from Magdeburg; don't take it; or end the game?

[:-]

Nothing in the victory conditions I can find about it, but I do recall the same issue at the other end of the map? Where is it in the rules? Here's what results from taking the city (I wasn't expecting this, we obviously haven't taken Berlin) I don't think we would have been allowed to get so close to the city if he'd known.

Well that was unexpected - but it does explain the rail line/supply situation as well. I'd like to see if 2X3 can resolve it - otherwise we'll have to end our game now [:(]. I was hoping to try and hold Berlin for a few more turns at least. Lets give the developers a chance to fix this - after all the time we've put into this game this is a dissapointing way for it to end (for both of us!).

I can redo the turn, and pull back from Magdeburg rather than taking it. That will open your supply line. You have to garrison the two hexes I have to vacate?

We conquered Germany and all we got is this lousy VP screen? Won't even make a lousy T shirt (not that I wear them)

We ain't giving any of it to the Allies now.

Section 20.1.2.

Axis permanent supply sources:
Magdeburg
Linz
Konigsberg
Helsinki
Soviet permanent supply sources:
Chelyabinsk
Baku

Rail must be connected to a permanent supply source (to be on the grid and functioning). IIRC some code was added that if all supply sources are captured, the game ends.
All understanding comes after the fact.

Turn 179 - November 16, 1944.

Thanks for the explanation concerning the permanent supply source - need to defend that next time!

For WitE 2.0 I think it would be better to make Kiel the supply source.
