Research Labs
Research Labs
It seems that I can easily reach my research cap just by placing sufficient labs on my homeworld spaceport, and the number of labs required is not that great. So my question is this: what's the point in bothering to stick research stations on a location with a research bonus? I know it would be slightly more efficient, in that I'd need fewer labs to reach the cap, but it's not like you need many labs to reach the cap.
Am I missing something?

I believe research locations raise also your total research potential, so basically with one you are able to research a bit faster.

RE: Research Labs
If your research potential is 900, and you have an even number of labs on your spaceport, and in total 900 (or more), your research output is 300 in each kind.
If you keep the even ratio of labs, and build a weapon research station at a 10% bonus site, your research potential is still 900, but your weapon research is now 330 instead of 300 due to the 10% bonus. If you place a weapons scientist at this station, the output further increases (add scientist bonus to location bonus). Only the best location counts, measured by "location + scientist" bonus.
So research locations and scientists boosts your research output beyond the empire potential.

Is it better to move all your research labs to special research locations instead of having them at your spaceport? Assuming you can defend the research location.

Define better?
It'll cost more, but you'll research faster. Tradeoffs and all that.
RE: Research Labs
As far as I know, all you need is one lab there. The AI method of distributing them around evenly is not too shabby, apart form there being way too many labs when player places a spaceport at each colony. It makes loss of any spaceport a rather insignificant research setback.ORIGINAL: invaderzim

Hmm, does stationing a scientist at a special research location further multiply the research bonus or is it better to just leave scientists at home at a strong spaceport?
RE: Research Labs
Doesn't the research bonus apply empire wide?
Regardless in early game I build one each lab on HW and a Large Spaceport. This is nice 200k in each of the three areas.

Wouldn't it be better keeping all your labs at the Homeworld IF you build the 3 R&D wonders? Or are those bonuses supposed to be empire wide?
RE: Research Labs
Wonder research bonuses are empire-wide. You do not need to have any labs in orbit to grab this bonus. I do not remember if those are cumulative with location bonuses.
Also I do not know if labs placed in ships may give You location bonuses if You would place it on planet orbit, but if it would, than I think placing Your labs on one type of ship would be optimal as if needed You can always move them elswere

RE: Research Labs
I usually build the main research labs at my Homeworld SpacePort. Enough to cover my Empire research cap.
Then build 3 more research stations for each tech tree at the best bonus locations I can find. Send associated scientists to those labs. There, I am all set.

Aha, that's what I was missing - thank you!

From the fairly limited testing I have done on this, I have established the following:
1. If you don't put a scientist on the special research location, you won't get the bonus for the location (at least, not unless the location has a better stst than the scientist?). You will still get the scientist stat bonus, as long as they're at an appropriate lab.
2. The bonus from scientists is not based purely on the scientist with the highest stat. However, I haven't yet figured out how it is calculated. Does anyone know?
3. I cannot figure out the ultra genius trait. The line in my research screen which reads "Actual Output (including bonuses)" does not include any extra 20% for ultra genius. Is this a known issue?
Edit, I now see someone answered my question 2 here:

Nope, you'll get the bonus which is the bigger from the individual scientists or locations, OR from the cumulated bonus of a scientist at a location that provides a bonus in the same area.
Exemple:
1°) one scientist on a spaceport, +15 in energy research, and one research station around a planet with a location bonus of +20 in energy -> You'll have a bonus of 20% in energy.
2°) Put the scientist with +15 in energy research on a station with a +20 location bonus in energy, you'll have a 15+20=35% bonus in energy research.

RE: Research Labs
3. The ultra-genius trait adds to the research cap of your empire. So if you have 500 research cap (i.e. top right [edit] on the research screen, I'm bad with remembering the jargon...) and then gain an ultra-genius this will increase to 600. Unlike the other scientist bonuses it adds to your cap rather than being a multiplier of the actual output. So at base level tech it means you now need 30 labs instead of 25 to reach your cap in the example above.
RE: Research Labs
Thanks for those clarifications, Feelotraveller and Strat_84. With any luck, I've actually got it now.

Thanks, then it may be worthwhile to put your scientists on well defended deep space research stations. Just hope spies don't take them down...

I'm pretty sure the R&D wonders are empire-wide.

@marqan yes. I love forums like this one for the very reason you just wrote. We all learn together! a learning/sharing/teaching community all rolled into one, all sharing roles as our needs, wants and expertize permit.
