Espionage

Post by Powloon »

KI have just picked up this game and I am at the beginnings of a shadows pre warp empire. Firstly I would like to say what a brilliant 4x game this is. One of the most fun games of its type I have played.

My only niggle with the game so far is the espionage side of things. The map missions seem far to easy to accomplish ( I'm playing as humans so I obviously get a bonus here) gaining a pirates galaxy map particularly seems to spoil the early explore side of the game which quickly leads to sweeping up the goodies from the surrounding area. Also I am basically just farming my way through the pirates tech.

Does anyone else think this is the case? Getting an early galaxy map from a pirate really feels like an exploit which is something I won't be doing in my next game to make things more of a challenge

Well, even if You do steal anybody else galaxy maps, You steel need to explore some places in order to investigate ruins, derelict ships, special locations. So it is not that steeling maps is doing everything for You. Also somethings may be missed that way (location of Zentabia Fluid or Korriban Spice or Loros Fruits) as they do not pop up then. But that said... Yes, I kind of agree that steeling galaxy map is too profitable.

If anybody ask me, than I would say it could be like with research steeling - insted of steeling all galaxy maps, let steel certian percentage (random part of knowinig galaxy) and next time steeling galaxy map should be more difficult.

Explorer ships are cheap and spamming tons of them takes little effort, and they will explore more in a few months than you will uncover from a pirate galaxy map. It's certainly useful to acquire a map before you leave your home system (especially if you can get it before you've explored your home system, which can be a pain before hyperdrives) but it's also a risk since losing an agent with good enough espionage skill to easily take a galaxy map is a pretty big loss. You could also discover a local map from ruins on a planet in your system (which I've done many times).

I think you're just overvaluing exploration, which is actually a fairly simple thing to do.
