Combat

A pair of IJN MSWs encountered a mine field at Teloekbetoeng and immediately commenced sweeping it.

A quartet of IJN DDs and a CA entered a minefield at Tori Shima with the following results.
DD Tsuta 2 mine hits, on fire, heavy damage
DD Nire 2 mine hits, sunk
DD Nara 1 mine hit, on fire, heavy damage
CA Atago 1 mine hit, on fire
DD Onami 1 mine hit, on fire
Allied shipping was under a CAP of 105 X P-51D when a raid of 7 X Judy, 15 X Betty, 18 X Zeke, 18 X Tony and 2 X Randy bored in. 5 Mustangs were damaged as they shredded the Japanese attackers. 7 Judys, 15 Bettys, 11 Zekes, 15 Tonys and both Randys were blasted from the sky before they could get close to the unloading ships.
Another attack followed a little later in the day and was met by 51 X P-51D. Out of 41 X Grace, 19 X Betty, 18 X Zeke and 12 X Frank the Mustangs shot down 12 X Grace, 14 X Betty, all of the Zekes and all of the Franks. A Mustang blew up in midair and 11 took damage, but no ships were threatened. Japanese ships attacked the Allied shipping in broad daylight with the following results.
Japanese Ships
BB Haruna 3 shell hits
CA Chikuma 5 shell hits
CA Atago 4 shell hits, on fire, heavy damage
CA Chokai 6 shell hits
CL Agano 2 shell hits
DD Hanazuki 4 shell hits, on fire, heavy damage
DD Kazegumo 5 shell hits, on fire
DD Onami, 3 shell hits, on fire, heavy damage
DD Umikaze 6 shell hits, on fire, heavy damage
DD Momo 13 shell hits, sunk
Allied Ships
DD Saufley 53 shell hits, sunk
DD Schroeder 21 shell hits, sunk
DD Lansdowne 21 shell hits , sunk
DD Maury 21 shell hits, sunk
AK Atlanta City 4 shell hits, on fire
AK William Luckenbach 10 shell hits, on fire, heavy damage
AK Ernest Meyer 8 shell hits, on fire, heavy damage
AK Empire Ballantyne 6 shell hits, on fire, heavy damage
Then the IJN conducted a naval bombardment causing no damage and inflicting negligible personnel losses. In the midst of all of the activity in the air some C-46s were intercepted by the Japanese fighters.

The SS Picuda, 77 miles W of Tainan, located, stalked and attacked 4 X PC, hitting 1 with a torpedo that set the target on fire and caused heavy damage.

The SS Golet was attacked by 6 DDs 81 miles N of Brunei. An attack on the ships at was made by 10 X B-24J who missed the 2 DDs.

Before retiring to replenish the Old Gals dumped more death on the Japanese near Cagayan, causing moderate casualties. The IJA 18th Division was attacked by aircraft a few times for very heavy casualties. The 56th Division was hit by planes for no losses. The IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade had very heavy casualties from an air raid. Allied artillery added heavy losses to the tally.

A naval bombardment of Legaspi caused moderate damage to the airstrip, light port damage, some secondary explosions, some fuel tanks blew up and light personnel losses. Allied troops hit the beach taking heavy casualties.

The SS Puffer evaded 3 PCs that were hunting her. Later through sheer determination they found and pounded her. Now she's heading for a port with moderate systems damage and moderate flooding. No position was given in her report.

Nanning underwent a fighter sweep by 72 X P-38J who bounced a gaggle of 7 X Zeke, 9 X Oscar, 13 X Tojo, 8 X Nick and 8 X Tony. The Lightnings knifed through the Japanese loosing 2 planes and having another take damage while they shot down 6 Zekes, 8 Oscars, 13 Tojos, 8 Nicks and 7 Tonys.

Andaman Island's airfield was bombed by 26 X B-24J, 1 damaged by AA fire, for moderate damage, a couple of secondary explosions and there were negligible troop losses. A short time later 38 X B-25J (6 damaged) and 17 X P-38J appeared, but they dropped off target, doing no harm. Later the 118th IJNAF Base Force was struck by 148 X Liberator VI, 45 X Mosquito FB.VI and 49 X B-25J for heavy casualties. Another raid on the 118th IJNAF Base Force missed due to cloud cover hiding the unit.

The 25th Dragoons Tank Regiment, 21 miles N of Krung Thep, was hit by 15 X Peggy who ran into 7 X Thunderbolt II. A Peggy went down in flames and 4 others were damaged as they caused very light losses to the British unit. A Thunderbolt was damaged in the fight.

The Japanese ships near Brunei were attacked by 13 X B-24J and 3 X Zeke, 3 X Tojo, 3 X Tony and 4 X Frank met them, but only made a token attempt at attacking the bombers. An AP was struck by a bomb and an MSW took 6 bomb hits that left it a burning wreck. Troops were seen going into the water.

At Naga the two sides traded artillery bombardments with the Allies having negligible casualties and the Japanese having very heavy losses.

Sam watched the air combat and the Japanese ships as they closed on the island. Being perched on the heights like this offered a great view. He saw what looked like explosions for no apparent reason so he figured that it was mines or torpedoes hitting the Jap ships and then though they tried to escape he saw the USN ships getting clobbered. It was a sobering sight and now he has a very lonely feeling. Where is the USN that's supposed to be protecting them?

Jay peers at the artillery round almost completely buried about 5 yards from his hole. It was a dud and he's been told to stay where he is and don't touch the round. He can't believe how lucky he is and his thoughts begin to turn towards maybe, just maybe he will survive this war.

The US 3rd Army took Boppard.

Kolberg fell to the 1st Polish Army. The Germans evacuated 80,000 refugees and wounded.

It looks like these ships were actually part of the Haruna TF -- note the presence of Atago and Onami. Or could this be fog of war?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Combat

Allied troops unloading over beach at Legaspi sustained heavy casualties. A naval bombardment produced very light damage to the airstrip, light damage to the port, a lot of secondary explosions were reported, some of which were fuel explosions and there were light Japanese personnel losses. The Allied assault took the base and the Japanese had heavy casualties.

2 IJN MSWs encountered a mine field at Teloekbetoeng and started to sweep it.

83 miles E of Kuching the SS Flying Fish was ineffectually attacked by 8 DDs.

The SS Picuda was handled roughly by 3 X PC 77 miles SE of Hong Kong. The sub is now suffering light systems damage that will force her out of the war until she's been repaired.

The SS Finback, 236 miles SE of Camranh Bay, was forced to dive by a PG who couldn't find her then. The PG kept at it all morning and into the afternoon. Later the sub spotted and attacked an AK and a PG. She hit the AK with 2 torpedoes doing heavy damage and setting it on fire.

Andaman Island was raided by 35 X B-24J resulting in moderate airstrip damage and extremely light casualties. Later 38 X B-25J (1 damaged) and 15 X P-38J added light damage to the airfield. The 118th IJNAF Base Force was struck twice by Allied aircraft for heavy losses.

Balikpapan was swept by 24 X P-51D who found 14 X Tony aloft. The Tonys spotted the Mustangs and ran for the clouds sustaining the loss of a single plane, which collided with a Mustang. Both fighters tumbled from the sky, and no chutes were seen.

Near Cagayan the IJA 18th Division had very heavy losses from an air raid. The IJA 56th Division had moderately heavy casualties from an Allied air attack. The IJA 100th Division had heavy losses from Allied planes. Allied artillery accounted for heavy Japanese casualties.

At Buin the 140th IJN Base Force was struck by 48 X B-25J for moderate losses.

The Japanese ships near Brunei were attacked by 39 X B-24J who ran into 28 X Zeke, 5 X George, 6 X Tojo, 5 X Tony and 10 X Frank. Between the fighters and the AA fire 16 bombers were lost and 7 took damage. A Zeke (13 damaged) and a Tojo (2 damaged) were destroyed while a Tony and 5 Franks were damaged. An AP was struck by a bomb and another took 6 bomb hits leaving it burning and battered. Troops were seen going into the water.

The Japanese ships about 62 miles N of Tori Shima were attacked by 10 X PB4Y and 83 X P-38J. 22 X Zeke, 14 X Tony and 42 X Frank were covering the ships and tried to stop the attack. The Allied fighters went about their business with a deadly efficiency downing all of the Japanese fighters at a cost of 16 Lightnings shot down and 7 others were damaged. The AA fire damaged 4 Liberators as they hit the CA with 6 bombs and the DD with 3 bombs. Both ships were on fire and badly damaged.

82 miles E of Aomori the SS Bashaw tried and failed to attack 5 X PC that never even knew she was there.

At Naga Japanese artillery tried and failed to harm the Allied troops. The Allied artillery inflicted very heavy casualties on the Japanese.

The SS Darter is expected to make it to Dadjangas by tomorrow morning. Through her crew's heroic efforts they have managed to reduce the catastrophic flooding a bit by bringing the pumps back online.

Some carriers will be in position to attack any shipping found at Brunei tomorrow morning.

When FDR was told of the fall of Legaspi he was visibly relieved as his concern for the boys at Naga was eating away at hi. Now there is a supply base and if need be a place to retreat to. The briefer goes on to inform him that landings will be made in the future N of Manila to put the squeeze on the Japanese. It is hoped that by doing this the Japanese can't concentrate their forces anywhere except Manila where they will be shelled, bombed and ultimately assaulted in the effort to free all of the PIs.

Sam has his squad ready to go and then Frankie takes the lead as the patrol heads out. Everybody is on their toes after what has happened. It served as a reminder that they're on Japan's doorstep and aren't welcomed guests. Sam is haunted by the sight of the ships being torn apart and burning. He's now convinced that the infantry is the only way to go. If you fly and get hit you still have to make your way safely to the ground to survive. On a ship that is hit the same goes about reaching dry land. He knows that puts him a step ahead of the fly boys and sailors despite the suffering the infantry goes through.

Stick's plane was down today for routine maintenance. The mechanics are barely able to keep up with their workload and he wonders when they manage to sleep. He promises himself that he'll manage to get them a bottle of booze and he heads off to visit with any Sea Bees he can find.

The US 7th Army took Worms.

Hitler ordered that everything be destroyed before it can be captured. Speer and local commanders sabotaged the orders.

The US 8th AF hit Berlin with 200 bombers and 700 fighters today.

Combat

The SS Drum tried to attack a TK about 142 miles SW of Hong Kong, but the 10 PCs found her first and attacked driving her off. Then the Drum was located and pinned by 5 PCs who gave her the beating of her life. The sub is now limping towards a port, but with very heavy systems damage and very heavy flooding it is doubtful that she will get far. Another sub is headed her way to pickup the crew as it's expected that they will have to scuttle their boat.

The Old Gals conducted a naval bombardment of the Japanese troops near Cagayan inflicting very heavy casualties on them. The IJA 18th Division was hit twice by Allied air power for heavy casualties. The IJA 56th Division was hammered by 3 air attacks for extremely heavy losses. The IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade was bombed and strafed for very heavy casualties. Allied artillery hammered away at the Japanese throughout the day adding very heavy losses to the toll.

The SS Carbonero was about 81 miles S of Tokyo when she was attacked by a DD and 3 PCs, but she managed to escape. Later in the day the Carbonero was clobbered by 2 DDs and 3 PCs and the sub is no more.

Brunei was swept by 36 X F4U-1D who tore into the 23 X Zeke, 3 X George, 3 X Tojo, 5 X Tony and 10 X Frank. A Corsair was lost in the furball and 3 others were damaged. 18 Zekes, 3 Georges, 2 Tojos, 4 Tonys and 8 Franks were shot down. The Japanese shipping was attacked in the morning by 26 X SBD, 48 X TBF (1 downed, 2 damaged), 15 X F4U-1D and 54 X F6F. The virtually helpless Japanese ships were relentlessly pounded for the following results.
AP Hie Maru 5 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AP Kumakawa Maru 2 torpedo hits, on fire
AP Konan Maru 1 torpedo hit
AP Kuraido Maru 5 bomb hits, 1 torpedo hits, on fire, heavy damage
AP Aratama Maru 4 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AP Midori Maru 2 torpedo hits, on fire, heavy damage
AP Kofuku Maru 1 torpedo hits, on fire, heavy damage
Later in the day another attack was made by 30 X SB2C, 18 X (2 damaged) and 8 X F6F for the following results.
AP Konan Maru 9 bomb hits, sunk
AP Kuraido Maru 1 torpedo hit, sunk
AP Anzan Maru 1 torpedo hit, on fire, heavy damage
The desperate Japanese threw 17 X Judy and 7 X Grace at the USN CVs without any fighter escort. The CAP of 88 X F6F and 21 X F4U-1D destroyed 13 Judys and 7 Graces with the survivors turning tail and racing for home long before they ever were a threat to the ships.

At Naga the IJA116th Division was ineffectually attacked by 31 X TBM (1 damaged) and 7 X FM-2. The IJA 16th Division had heavy losses from 50 X SBD (2 damaged), 74 X SB2C (2 damaged), 45 X TBF (1 damaged) and 1 X F6F. Japanese artillery made lots of noise, but accomplished nothing. The Allied artillery was deadly as it inflicted very heavy casualties on the Japanese.

At Buin the 140th IJN Base Force was attacked by 36 X B-25J for moderately heavy casualties.

22 miles N of Krung Thep the 3rd Indian Division was raided by 11 X Peggy and 8 X Thunderbolt II intercepted them before they could harm the Indian unit, splashing 7 of the Peggys.

26 X Betty, 9 X Zeke and 32 X Frank attacked the TF 72 miles E of Naga, being met by 202 X F6F who were vectored out to engage the threat. All but 4 of the Franks were shot down at the cost of 3 Hellcats lost and 18 damaged.

A pair of IJN DDs were attacked by 6 X SB2C 91 miles NE of Kuching with 1 of them being struck by a bomb. 6 of the Helldivers were damaged by flak. Later 15 X TBF attacked and 1 was splashed and 8 took damage. A DD was struck by a torpedo which caused heavy damage and fires and later the vessel slipped under the waves.

About 143 miles N of Miri a CL was bombed by 12 Helldivers who hit the ship with 2 bombs. The target was heavily damaged and burning. 5 X Judy showed up only for 4 of them to be killed by the 84 X F6F and 21 X F4U-1D that were there. A Hellcat was damaged.

Near Miri 14 X TBM were engaged by 6 X George who damaged 14 of the Avengers, but the CL ate a fish and was burning.

At 158 miles N of Kuching 24 X SBD (2 downed, 9 damaged), 44 X F4U-1D and 57 X F6F as they swooped in on a pair of CVEs. One was hammered by 8 bomb hits that did heavy damage and the ship was burning while the other was struck by 2 bombs and she was also on fire.

77 miles N of Sandakan an IJN sub tried to attack the AO Millicoma, but her escorts drove the it away.

Darter lies at the wharf with her deck almost awash. The crew of the AS at the port are amazed that the sub made it to Dadjangas.

The Flying Deuces were transferred to Legaspi today. Stick hopes that starting tomorrow his prospects for some air to air combat will improve. He wonders how much longer this drought will last. We're as far forward as we can get so I should see some Jap planes he reasons to himself.

Jay crouches down as low as he can get in his hole and almost wills himself to shrink as some incoming mortar round impact in his platoon's area. He hates being shelled as he feels totally helpless and some of the vets laugh at him saying that he needs to be on the receiving end of the heavy stuff. “Then this little stuff won't seem so bad,” the guy says. Jay wonders if he'll live long enough to learn all he needs to survive. The same guy said, “Besides knowing you need to be lucky. Look at me the last time we attacked the guys to my left and right were hit and I didn't get a scratch. Luck is the most important thing to have besides dry socks,” he laughs.

Sylvia and Pete are enjoying a nice walk in the park with Pearl. Everybody stops them to say hello and then their attention immediately goes to Pearl. She's a little cutie and she loves the attention. Pete couldn't be happier with his life and Sylvia is also very content. The other day John Doe had stopped by and gave Pete a frozen Turkey and some toys for Pearl. Pete thinks about how distant the war seems for them.

The US 7th Army took Saarbrucken.

Combat

A naval bombardment of the Japanese troops near Cagayan caused them very heavy casualties. The IJA 56th Division was struck 3 times by Allied planes for very heavy losses. The IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade had very heavy casualties from an air raid. The IJA 100th Division had heavy losses in an air attack. Allied artillery contributed heavy Japanese casualties to the cause.

Balikpapan was swept by 24 X P-51D who bounced 15 X Tony, downing 2 of them before they could run and hide in the clouds.

Naga was bombed by 251 X B-29 for heavy damage to the airfield, very heavy damage to the port, to many secondary explosions were claimed to have been counted (many of which were fuel explosions) and personnel losses were very heavy. The IJA 16th Division had very heavy casualties from Allied aircraft making 2 attacks on it. A TBM was shot down and 5 SBDs and 2 Helldivers were damaged in the attack. The IJA 103rd Division shot down a Helldiver and avoided any losses. Once again the Japanese artillery made noise and did no harm. The Allied artillery barrages inflicted very heavy casualties on the Japanese.

At Buin the 140th IJN Base Force was hit by 52 X B-25J for moderate casualties.

Near Brunei the Japanese had 5 X Zero, 2 X George, 6 X Tojo, 1 X Tony and 7 X Frank up to protect the shipping when a raid appeared consisting of 44 X B-24J. The fighters attacked and the bombers destroyed a Tojo while damaging 3 Zekes, a George, 4 Tojos and 2 Franks. The toll on the bombers from the fighters and AA fire was 4 birds lost and 16 damaged. A DD was hit by a bomb and was on fire and another DD was hit 4 times and turned turtle. The Japanese CAP was now down to 2 X Zeke, 4 X George, 2 X Tojo, 1 X Tony and 3 X Franks when 4 X B-24J came on. They were turned away and a George was damaged.

A strike made up of 15 TBFs found and attacked 4 APs 78 miles N of Kuching with the following results.
AP Midori Maru 1 torpedo hits, sunk
AP Kumakawa Maru 2 torpedo hits, sunk
AP Aratama Maru 1 torpedo hits, on fire, heavy damage
Another attack was made by 10 X SBD, 48 X F6F and 12 X F4U-1D attacked an AP and an MSW. The AP was hit with 3 bombs for heavy damage and was on fire. 36 X F4U-1D swept the skies, but encountered no opposition.

About 149 miles SE of Saigon a CL believed to have been the Abukuma was struck by 21 X SB2C, 13 X TBM and 15 X F6F. The already damaged ship was ravaged by 9 bombs and 2 torpedoes and she was no more. Then 12 X SBD (2 damaged), 21 X TBF (4 damaged), 46 X F6F and 12 X F4U-1D attacked 3 DDs nearby hitting 1 with a fish and another with 2 bombs and a torpedo sinking it. Both surviving ships were burning and heavily damaged. Another attack by 21 X SB2C (2 damaged), 26 X TBF (1 downed, 11 damaged) and 13 X TBM (4 damaged) arrived and attacked 4 DDs hitting 1 with 3 bombs doing heavy damage and triggering fires and another with a torpedo sinking it.

About 311 miles S of Camranh Bay 4 TBFs unsuccessfully attacked a DD losing a plane and having 2 more take damage.

The SS Drum, though still barely afloat, has just about had it and her skipper gave the orders to abandon and scuttle the boat. The crew climb through the hatch in the sail, inflate the rafts, lower them into the water which was an easy task as the sub is almost completely awash and then row to another sub standing by to pick them up. The exec brings the log with him, but the skipper was never seen again as the sub went down one final time.

Gil wearily climbs out of his flight gear and is soaking wet. All of the airmen are exhausted by the long mission to Naga and they hope it was worth it. It's raining so he and almost everyone else grabs a bar of soap and runs outside to wash up. Later after some chow he falls asleep even though he intended to write a letter to Elaine and another to his family. Commanders know that only 6 planes were operational losses and only 1 crew was lost so they consider this mission as a great success. As soon as operations start to draw Japanese strength to the Northern part of the country they hope to start bombing Japan in earnest.

Stalin sends a cable to Tokyo informing the Japanese that the transports in question from a while ago are on a supply mission to Sakhalin Island. He sneers as the aide finishes writing down the message and Stalin turns away nodding to his generals saying, “Let's see how they react to this.” An admiral informs Stalin that the Japanese have been tracking these ships for 2 days now, but have made no attempt to attack them as yet.

FDR has kept a close eye on any events in the North. So far the Japanese have snooped, but have made no attempt to attack the ships bound for Shikka. Franklin wonders if this luck can hold. The USN has orders not to start a fight and when these orders were issued they were highly controversial.

Slim finished a meal that was liberally soaked by the rains today. His hole is constantly flooding and he's generally miserable. He can't wait to be done with Cagayan so that the Corps can throw him into some other hell hole. At least one of the lads offered him some luke warm coffee the last time he made his rounds. He doesn't even bother with his poncho anymore as he figures that it's better to be wet than sweat, not that the poncho really keeps him dry anyway.

Stuhlweissenburg fell to the Russians today.

The US 8th AF attacked Hamburg with 650 bombers.

Combat

Catanduanes was occupied by the Allies

An Allied ASW attack 133 miles N of Brunei claimed a very large number of hits on a sub.

A naval bombardment of the Japanese forces near Cagayan resulted in very heavy casualties. The IJA 18th Division was attacked by aircraft 2 times for heavy casualties. The IJA 56th Division was pounded by planes for very heavy losses. The IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade sustained very heavy casualties from 2 air raids. The IJA 100th Division had very heavy losses due to an air strike. The IJA 102nd Division had moderate casualties from Allied planes. Allied forces attacked the Japanese positions with both sides absorbing extremely heavy losses. The Japanese lost ground and it was thought that they suffered much worse in in today’s fight than the Allies did.

At Naga the IJA 16th Division had heavy losses from 46 X SBD (5 damaged), 72 X SB2C, 45 X TBF (1 damaged), 23 X TBM and 1 X F6F. The Japanese artillery continued to expend munitions for no returns. Allied artillery caused very heavy Japanese casualties.

At Buin the 140th IJN Base Force took moderate casualties from an air attack made by 53 X B-25J.

The Japanese ships 148 miles N of Brunei were attacked by 15 X SBD, 19 X SB2C (3 damaged), 18 X TBF (11 damaged), 24 X TBM (5 damaged), 24 X F4U-1D, 57 X F6F and 12 X FM-2. A DD ate 2 fish and went down. Later 11 X TBM (2 damaged) and 11 X FM-2 attacked hitting a DD with a torpedo that did heavy damage and ignited fires.

4 X Frances tried to attack the Allied ships 69 miles S of Shikka and were all destroyed by the CAP of 125 X F6F, 49 X F4F-4 and 180 X FM-2. A short time later 6 X Frances tried and died as the CAP did it's job once again having 8 Hellcats suffer some damage. Then 3 X Frances tried to attack and were splashed by the Allied fighters, 1 Hellcat was damaged. Still not done the Japanese threw 7 X Frances into the meat grinder, losing them all and 6 Hellcats were damaged.

The Allied ships 211 miles N of Brunei were attacked by 12 X Judy, 24 X Grace and 5 X Betty. The CAP of 11 X F6F and 16 X FM-2 and flak thrown up by the ships killed 12 Judys, 8 Graces (8 damaged) and 3 Bettys while having 3 Hellcats and a Wildcat take damage. No ships were harmed despite ordinance being dropped by the Japanese. Still not done another 7 X Frances were shot down as they too tried to attack the Allied ships. A Hellcat was damaged in the running battle. Later 5 X Grace tried their hand, 1 was destroyed and 3 took damage as 5 Hellcats and 14 FM-2s tried to fend them off. The attackers managed to drop their fish, but scored no hits.

Reports from patrol flights filter in indicating that Japanese ships are sinking from yesterday's attack in the Borneo area.

The SS Darter is still being pumped out and her leaks are being attended to. It is expected that soon she will be able to make for a yard to be repaired.

Slim is joking with the lads as they beginning digging their new fighting holes. They threw the Japanese back and by some miracle nobody in the platoon was seriously hurt. Slim tells them that he can smell the impending doom of the Japanese forces facing them. “Besides they must be punch drunk by now with the aerial, naval and artillery bombardments constantly pounding them.” He looks across the narrow ravine that separates his hill from the ridge the Japanese fell back to and wonders what the price will be to get there.

Chris is relaxing as the ship is refueled at Iwo Jima. They are part of a large force whose mission it is to cover Tori Shima from further attacks. Chris is one of six Hellcat pilots aboard with double figures in kills and he isn't impressed by that fact. What does impress him is that he's survived this long.

Combat

A PBM reported attacking a sub near Maizuru and claimed a hit.

A naval bombardment started the day for the Japanese near Cagayan. They had very heavy casualties from it. The IJA 18th Division was visited by Allied planes 3 times today for very heavy losses. The IJA 56th Division was struck twice for very heavy casualties. The IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade was strafed by Thunderbolts for moderately heavy losses. The IJA 100th Division was targeted by 2 strikes for very heavy casualties. The IJA 102nd Division was hit by aircraft for heavy losses. The Allied artillery barrages caused heavy casualties.

Andaman Island was bombed by 156 X Liberator VI (1 damaged) and 47 X B-24J for extremely heavy damage to the airfield, light damage to the port, a large number of secondary explosions were observed and personnel losses were moderate.

Balikpapan's CAP of 17 X Tony were bounced by 24 X P-51D who were on a sweep. 6 Tonys went down and the rest ran.

At Naga the IJA 116th Division was attacked by a Helldiver that took some damage, but did no harm. The IJA 16th Division was pounded by 12 X SBD, 71 X SB2C (3 damaged), 44 X TBF (1 downed), 31 X TBM and 1 X F6F for heavy casualties. Japanese artillery accomplished nothing for their efforts today. The Japanese had heavy losses from the Allied artillery today.

Near Tokyo 4 X PB4Y were jumped by 32 X Zeke, 49 X Frank and 40 X Tony with the predictable result of all of the bombers being destroyed while a Tony was damaged. The ships were never in danger.

FDR is pleased to hear that there were no air attacks in the Sakhalin Island area. “It looks as if our pal, Uncle Joe, has made good on his promises after all. Now it remains to be seen if the treaty he signed with the Japanese is worth the paper it's written on or not, as he claims. The landings are proceeding as planned?” A large grin becomes even bigger as he's assured that men, planes, fuel and supplies are already ashore in sufficient quantity to prevent all but a massive attack from succeeding.

The Red Army is now outside of Danzig and Gotenhafen.

The RAF used 300 bombers on Hildesheim, a small city of no importance.

A Coronado spotted an AP at Wakkanai, claiming a hit.

The SS Hoe attacked 3 PGs and 2 PCs 22 miles N of Wakkanai, hitting a PG with a torpedo sinking it.

A naval bombardment on the Japanese near Cagayan inflicted very heavy casualties. The IJA 18th Division had moderate casualties the IJA 56th Division took heavy losses, the IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade absorbed very heavy casualties and the IJA 102nd Division had heavy losses from repeated Allied air attacks. Allied artillery barrages throughout the day contributed heavy casualties to the Japanese.

Tokyo was swept by 67 X P-51D and 48 X Zeke, 61 X Frank and 60 X Tony engaged them downing 13 Mustangs and damaging 4. 23 Zekes, 44 Franks and 47 Tonys were shot down in the fight.

Andaman Island was bombed by 136 X Liberator VI and 27 X B-24J who did heavy damage to the airfield, light damage to the port, some secondary explosions were noted and casualties were light.

At Naga the 116th Division was struck for moderately heavy losses by USN aircraft. A Dauntless, a Helldiver and an Avenger were damaged. Japanese artillery once more was useless while the Allied big guns dished out heavy casualties.

Units that have found themselves in the rear area are now getting priority transport to bring them forward as operation accelerate and support units are at a premium.

Gil and a few of his crew took a stroll around the base and found nothing new or interesting, but it did kill some time and Gil returned to his quarters relaxed. He missed mail call, but Landy brought a letter for him. It was from his older sister and for the most part all she did was complain about their father and his not working. He crushed the letter and tossed it in a trash barrell on his way to chow as he thought that there are enough problems in this world without people creating more.

Jim and a couple of other Sea Bees were sitting on the hill overlooking the airfield and port when Sam arrived there with Frankie. Jim said hi and introduced him to the guys who shared their beer with him. Frankie spent the time playing with one of the guys and when Sam was going to leave he was asked if he would sell the dog. When Sam said that Frankie wasn't for sale the guy insisted that everything and everyone had a price and that Sam should name the price of the dog. “Look,” said Sam, “I don't mean to offend you, but like I said the dog isn't for sale. He's the squad mascot and he leads our patrols. He's unofficially in the Army and that's it.” The guys said he understood, but if Sam changed his mind that he should let Jim know.

Jay is soaked and has a bad case of crotch rot. He can't believe how miserable his existence is and then some mortar rounds impact to his front reminding him that things can always be worse. A medic took a look at him and sent him to the aid station to their rear where a doctor told him that he needed to keep dry. Jay laughed and said that it was asking the impossible as another heavy shower started. The doctor said that Jay needed some time back at Legaspi, but that he couldn't send him there as many of the men here have similar problems and that their units need them.

The US 3rd Army took Ludwigshafen and Speyer today.

The SS Whale, 28 miles S of Toyohara, attacked 2 PGs and 2 PCs hitting a PG with 2 torpedoes leaving it burning and heavily damaged. Later in the day the Whale attacked a PG 19 miles W of Toyohara, hitting it with a fish. The vessel was heavily damaged and burning.

The SS Argonaut, 93 miles SE of Shanghai, was attacked by 3 PCs. The systems damage is moderate, but the flooding is heavy and it's questionable if the sub will survive this mission. “At least we left our mines in the Jap's backyard,” one of the crewman quipped.

Andaman Island was bombed by 130 X Liberator VI and 35 X B-24J for moderate damage to the port, some secondary explosions and very light casualties.

Near Cagayan the IJA 4th Division had heavy losses from an air attack. The IJA 18th Division underwent 2 air raids and absorbed very heavy casualties. The IJA 56th Division was struck 3 times by air attacks for heavy losses. The IJA 100th Division has hit 3 times by Allied planes for very heavy casualties. The IJA 102nd Division had moderately heavy losses from being bombed and strafed. Allied artillery inflicted heavy casualties.

The 118th IJNAF Base Force was raided by aircraft and had moderate casualties. 3 Mitchells were damaged in the raid.

At Naga the Japanese artillery was still making noise and accomplishing nothing. The Allied artillery dished out very heavy losses on the Japanese.

Bill is on edge as by tomorrow morning the Mighty Mo will be between Tori Shima and Japan. The purpose is a show of strength to make the Japanese think twice before sending another bombardment group to hit the island. Of course the 3 TFs are strong enough to deal with just about anything the Japanese choose to throw their way. The problem is the Navy needs them elsewhere. Before he tries to grab some shut eye he tries to unwind by writing a letter to Sandy.

Sam has taken lots of heat from the guys in the squad about him even talking about selling Frankie. One of the guys suggested that they would sell him if anyone was dumb enough to want him. “Hell,” one of them added, “We'd even pay somebody to take you, but the dog stays.”

Gil stares at another letter from home. This time it's from his other sister and she's moaning about the same thing, their father. He sighs and tosses this letter where he deposited the last one. He then wonders why he hasn't gotten anything from Elaine for a while.

FDR is told of the progress being made at Shikka. “Unless the Japanese throw everything including the kitchen sink at us there the base should be able to hold once the Sea Bees finish the fortifications. The priorities are the airfield expansion and expansion of the port facilities. By the time they're done there it'll be a base to rival Pearl Harbor, but without the repair yard.” FDR thanks the man and thinks that Stalin is a crafty bastard as this will become his at the end of the war.

British troops entered Wesel today.

A naval bombardment of the Japanese troops near Cagayan began the day with a bang. The Japanese had heavy casualties. The IJA 4th Division escaped without being harmed despite being subjected to an air raid. The IJA 18th Division was struck twice by Allied aircraft for very heavy casualties. The 56th Division was attacked by planes 4 times and sustained very heavy losses. The IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade had very heavy casualties from 2 air attacks. The IJA 100th Division had moderate losses from 2 air raids. The IJA 102nd Division had very heavy casualties from an Allied air attack. Allied artillery barrages contributed heavy Japanese losses to the tally.

The SS Manta, 153 miles S of Hong Kong, attacked 5 X PC, hitting 1 with a torpedo that did heavy damage and set the vessel on fire. The other 4 PCs then pounded the sub. Later the PCs attacked again after a short period of quiet. The Manta is now making for port with light systems damage and a few leaky valves.

Ichang was bombed by 78 X B-25J whose escorts never showed up leaving them at the mercy of 19 X Frank and 3 X Tony. Between the fighters and the flak 5 Mitchells went down and 6 took damage. The Japanese airfield was lightly damaged, there were many secondary explosions, between the bombs and bullets 2 Franks (9 damaged), 4 Nicks and a Dinah were destroyed with 2 Tonys also damaged and personnel losses were very light.

Andaman Island was raided by 87 X Liberator VI who did moderate damage to the port and triggered many secondary explosions.

Balikpapan was swept by 24 X P-51D who dove into 18 X Zeke and 13 X Tony shooting down 8 Zekes and 2 Tonys.

At Naga Japanese artillery accomplished nothing again while the Allied big guns dished out heavy casualties.

Operation Noose is proceeding and there is some inter service friction that nobody seems willing to squash.

Slim tells the lads that they go at the Japs again tomorrow. There's supposed to be plenty of air, naval and artillery support, but somehow he doesn't take much comfort from that. How many times have they advanced over a shattered landscape only to be greeted by a determined Japanese defense?

Sandy stares out of the window in the living room wondering when Spring will come. She misses her hikes. Dave snaps her out of the day dreaming by blowing the horn on the truck and she heads out of the house. They're going to spend the Better part of this Monday in town picking up things for the garage and what not. Sandy will make for the Post Office first thing, of course.

Stick killed a pair of rats today and now the guys are talking to the mechanics and they agree to paint 2 on Stick's plane. Luckily for Stick the crew chief gets wind of this and reminds his guys that Stick is the only pilot that really gives a damn about them. Nothing is painted on the plane.

61 X P-51D swept Tokyo and they encountered 65 X Zeke, 75 X Frank and 34 X Tony up and willing to fight. The furball saw 16 Mustangs shot down and 4 damaged while the Japanese lost 32 Zekes (1 damaged), 44 Franks and 30 Tonys.

Andaman Island was bombed by 125 X Liberator VI for moderately heavy port damage, many secondary explosions and very light personnel losses.

Ichang had 16 X Frank and 3 X Tony up when 57 X P-38J swept in on them. All but 2 of the Franks were blasted from the sky at the cost of 3 Lightnings lost.

At Naga the Allied troops had extremely light casualties from the Japanese artillery. The Allied artillery showered the Japanese defenders with shells throughout the day for very heavy losses.

Some AKs are loading supplies that are bound for Tori Shima. Their crews don't have any idea where they're bound and if they did they wouldn't like it.

After a meeting held at the Pentagon Admiral King has sent a message to COMSUBPAC demanding a strategic change in the use of subs. He's unhappy with the recent trend of Japanese ASW assets costing the loss and damage of so many boats for diminishing returns.

Slim watches the lads digging new holes and knows that there'll be unhappy Marines when he tells them that they're going to attack the Japanese again tomorrow. He can't believe how tired he is and he thought that he was used to it. As he crouches down he stares at his tattered dungarees and sighs. It seems that all he can think of lately is sleep, now if he could only get enough of it.

Chris flew a boring CAP mission today. He like boring missions as they are the ones were people live. He got a wave off on his landing approach and now he's the butt of all the jokes in the squadron. Chris takes it good naturedly as he knows everybody goes through it. Still it does chip away at one's self esteem.

Jay spent another boring morning and then he was assigned to go to the rear area to bring back supplies and water. They never seem to have enough water though he always seems to be sweating like a pig. They met a DUKW at the planned spot and the craft's crew made them do the unloading themselves. When Jay griped about them being lazy they used some choice language that told him if he didn't like it to leave everything where it was and to leave empty handed. Jay shut up, but to say that he was angry would've been an understatement.

The US Army rolled into Aschaffenburg.

There is street fighting in Danzig.

As they collapse into their freshly dug holes Slim and his lads are told that they go again tomorrow. With a collective groan they resume whatever they were doing. Some light a smoke, others have something to eat and some fall asleep immediately. Slim wakes them up and tells everybody to see to their weapons.

Ed's Old Gals step up to the plate again tomorrow. After all of the needed things are attended to Phil hands Ed a message report and Ed's eyes light up. “Three of our sisters up north seemed to have feasted on a Japanese troop convoy while the planes got in the first punches the battle wagons really gave them the coup de grace. Anytime you want to give me good news like this please feel free to do so,” Ed says as he slaps Phil on the back.

The Old Gals opened the day with a naval bombardment of the Japanese forces near Cagayan causing very heavy casualties. The IJA 18th Division sustained very heavy losses from 2 air raids. The IJA 56th Division suffered very heavy casualties from 3 strikes made on it by Allied aircraft. The IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade had extremely heavy losses from being bombed and strafed a few times. The IJA 100th Division had moderate casualties from 2 air strikes.

Near Toyohara the SS Cobia attacked a lone AP and hit it with a torpedo setting it ablaze and doing heavy damage. Soldiers were observed jumping from the ship. Later the sub again attacked the ship hitting hit with 2 fish this time. More men were seen going into the water as the ship went down. 9 Zekes tried to fend off an Allied air attack being made by 10 X B-24D, 36 X TBF, 38 X TBM, 13 X F6F, 98 X FM-2 (1 downed), 18 X F4F-4 (1 damaged), 3 X P-51D (1 damaged), 40 X P-47D and 3 X P-38J (1 downed). All of the Zekes were splashed and then the ships were subjected to the carnage.

The waters were filled with drowning Japanese troops. Patrol planes reported spotting sinking APs throughout the day from yesterday's attacks.

Bangkok was the target for 131 X Liberator VI (3 downed, 22 damaged) and 38 X B-24J. The port was very heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions, a couple of fuel tanks were burning and personnel losses were very heavy. The B-24Js dropped mines in the harbor approaches.

At Rabaul the IJA 46th Division had moderate casualties from an attack made by 38 X B-24D and 31 X B-24J.

On Andaman Island the 146th IJN Base Force had moderate casualties from 35 X Mosquito FB.VI and 33 X B-25J (2 damaged). The 118th IJNAF Base Force was hit by 10 X Mosquito FB.VI, 36 X B-25J (4 damaged) and 40 X P-38J for moderate losses.

Near Ominato a Rufe was damaged as it ran from a USN air strike consisting of 39 X B-24D (1 damaged), 20 X P-51D and 27 X P-38J. The target was 4 DDs and 2 were hit once each, 1 took 2 bomb hits and the other was struck by 3 bombs. 3 of the DDs were burning and 2 were heavily damaged. A short time later a Rufe got out of the way of 3 X B-24D who unsuccessfully attacked a PC. One bomber was damaged by AA fire from the vessel.

About 89 miles SE of Shanghai the SS Besugo tried to penetrate the screen of a TK, but the 1 X PG and 6 X PC prevented it. The sub managed to escape without damage.

At Naga the Japanese artillery accomplished nothing while the Allied guns caused heavy Japanese casualties.

An Allied attack on the Japanese near Cagayan heaped extremely heavy losses on the Japanese and gained substantial ground while suffering heavy losses of their own.

The SS Argonaught lost her fight for survival today as her crew took to the rafts and scuttled her.

Sam leads his squad on another patrol and the whole time they're out on it he wonders how anybody could sneak onto this crowded rock that's his home.

Gene was asked if he'd be interested in working on developing a new kind of welding that would be stronger. Without a second thought he jumps at the offer and is told where and when starting tomorrow morning.

“I can smell it. The Japs are just about finished,” says Slim. “The only problem is that I'm to damned tired to lift my arms and they want us to go again tomorrow. How many days in a row is it now?”

Kustrin fell today. Germany has now lost the last of it's oil fields.

Combat

A naval bombardment of the area near Cagayan caused heavy Japanese casualties. An Allied attack gained some ground, inflicted extremely heavy Japanese casualties while the attackers had heavy losses.

The SS Cero, 141 miles NW of Akita, got into a fight with 5 X PC. She hit a PC with 3 torpedoes and the others pounded her hard. The sub's patrol is over as she has moderate flooding and moderate damage to her systems.

The SS Porpoise, 78 miles E of Batan Island, took a horrible bashing from 5 PCs and sank.

The SS Flying Fish, 89 miles SE of Saigon, hit an AK with 2 torpedoes and escaped the 2 angry PGs that were escorting the ship. In the afternoon the sub reacquired the AK and fed it another fish.

An Allied air attack on Toyohara by 91 X B-29, 52 X B-24D, 13 X P-51D and 32 X P-47D resulted in very heavy airfield damage, many secondary explosions were seen, 9 Irvings and 1 Betty were destroyed and personnel losses were moderate. The harbor was also mined in the attack.

Tokyo was swept by 58 X P-51D who ran into a gaggle of 51 X Zeke, 15 X George, 57 Frank and 20 X Tony. In the furball 24 Zekes, 4 Georges, 35 Franks and 12 Tonys were shot down while 14 Mustangs were destroyed and 3 took damage.

Gili Gili was raided by 47 X B-24D, 46 X B-24J and 1 X Spitfire VIII who did moderate damage to the airfield, light damage to the port, caused a secondary explosion and there were extremely light casualties. The IJA 21st Division was struck by 47 X B-25J, 51 X A-26B, 6 X Kittyhawk III and 14 X Spitfire VIII for moderate losses.

47 X B-25J hit the 140th IJN Base Force, at Buin for moderate troop losses.

The Allied ships, 93 miles SE of Toyohara, were attacked by 43 X Grace and 3 X Frances who ran afoul of the CAP of 7 X P-38J (6 damaged), 81 X F6F (4 damaged), 293 X FM-2 and 53 X F4F-4 (2 damaged) who downed all but 3 of the Graces who turned tail and ran for their lives. A tight leash is being held on the CAP as attacks have been expected for some time now. The Japanese didn't disappoint as another raid of 52 X Grace, 23 X Betty and 12 X Frances tried and failed miserably in their vain attempt to puncture the CAP. 22 X Grace (8 damaged), 19 X Betty, and 12 X Frances bought the farm while 3 X P-38J, 11 X F6F, 8 X FM-2 and 1 X F4F-4 were damaged. The Japanese were determined to exact revenge for their sunken ships and threw an attack of 7 X Grace, 7 X Betty, 9 X Peggy, 19 X Zero and 12 X Randy into the meat grinder. All of the Japanese planes were splashed. The Allies lost 5 P-38Js (2 damaged), 1 F6F (2 damaged) and 1 F4F-4 (1 damaged) with 4 FM-2s also damaged. Before the fighters could catch their breath 8 Graces came on and and when they were jumped 1 Grace was killed and 2 were damaged. Then 14 X Grace, 6 X Betty and 15 X Frances gave it a go with 3 X Grace (1 damaged), 2 X Betty (1 damaged) and 15 X Frances being destroyed. A Lightning, 6 Hellcats and 6 Wildcat FM-2s were damaged in the running fight. Later 19 X Grace and 4 X Zero attempted an attack with 1 X Grace and 4 X Zero being destroyed. No Japanese plane ever came within visual sight of the Allied warships.

About 71 miles S of Hong Kong the SS Tilefish attacked 5 X PG, hitting 1 of them with 3 torpedoes. The victim died in a fireball. The Tilefish then quietly slipped away to reload her forward tubes.

At Naga Japanese artillery scared the birds and killed the foliage, but didn't harm any of the Allied forces there. The Allied artillery caused heavy Japanese losses.

The SS Darter has been patched up enough at a forward base that she may now cruise to a yard for extensive repairs.

Slim has collapsed in his hole and is muttering something about the Japanese being to stupid to know when they're beaten as he strips down his weapon and begins to clean it. The lads are dug in and he's made sure that they all have something to eat and water. The platoon lost another man today and 4 wounded in the attack and now Slim wonders what the price for the next hill will be. Though the Japanese are dying in droves their defensive lines are constantly shrinking so as long as they have bullets the price will be high.

Gene spent his first day in his new capacity listening to what the others had to say about welding and the new demands that they faced and their thoughts on how to accomplish their goal. When Gene was asked what he thought he hesitated and then said, “I need some time to digest all that I've heard today. I did have an old hand back at the yard I came from who had some very interesting ideas on the subject and maybe we could bring him here to spend a bit of time with us so he could share his thoughts on the matter.” The guy heading this section liked that idea and asked Gene to hang around to give him all of the information and then he'd take care of the rest.

Ed reads the reports and focuses on the fuel status of the ships and the bases from which they can operate from. He taps his desk and says that fuel is still the major concern and that they have to fight for each and every ton that they need. The staffers nod and get on it. Ed has an unquenchable thirst for his Old Gals burn fuel like it's going out of style.

The Battle for Paderborn began and will last for 3 days.

Danzig fell with 45 U-boats and 10,000 POWs taken.

Combat

The SS Growler tried to get a setup on 3 DDs, 156 miles SE of Wonsan, but failed. The Growler was located by 5 PCs a few hours later and took a pounding from them. In the afternoon the sub was attacked by 2 DDs and now is beset by moderate systems damage and heavy flooding. It will be a struggle to reach a friendly port.

The Old Gals conducted a naval bombardment near Cagayan and the Japanese had very heavy casualties from it. An Allied assault on the Japanese positions swamped the defenses and the Japanese lost extremely heavily and are now surrounded. Allied losses were very heavy.

The SS Archerfish attacked an AO being shepherded by 5 PCs 142 miles NW of Sasebo. She hit her target with a torpedo setting it on fire and then slipped away. A couple of hours later the sub hit another AO with a torpedo doing heavy damage and fires erupted. 5 PCs tried and failed to pin down her location.

The SS Flying Fish hit a TK with 2 fish sinking it about 29 miles S of Camranh Bay. Then the 4 DDs escorting it attacked the sub. Now the sub will make for port with light systems damage, but enough to warrant the curtailment of her patrol.

Ichang was attacked by 79 X B-25J and 62 X P-38J. The Japanese threw 22 X Frank and 6 X Tony at them and only 2 Franks survived the fight with the Lightnings who lost 2 planes and another pair damaged. The bombers then caused heavy damage to the airfield, there were some secondary explosions reported, 4 Nicks and 3 Dinahs were trashed and personnel losses were light.

Bangkok's harbor was mined by 125 X Liberator VI and 48 X B-24J. Later 16 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed, 8 damaged) and 55 X B-25J Mitchell (3 downed, 37 damaged) hit the port for moderate damage, there were a few secondary explosions and casualties were very heavy.

Gili Gili was hit by 11 X B-24D, 27 X B-24J and 9 X Spitfire VIII for light damage to the airstrip and a couple of secondary explosions were seen.

At Buin the 140th IJN Base Force was struck by 48 X B-25J for very light casualties.

On Andaman Island the 118th IJNAF Base Force had moderate losses from 44 X Mosquito FB.VI and 48 X B-25J.

At Naga the Japanese artillery barrage accomplished nothing while they had very heavy losses from the Allied guns.

Tomorrow a joint British and American force is scheduled to hit the beaches on Andaman Island as the opening move in what is hoped to be a series of attacks that will throw the Japanese of balance and threaten their supply routes. It's a slow process as the RN has no support other than limited ground forces from the US and many British APs are on loan to the Americans. It is also planned that most of the US air formations will be pulled out of the CBI to tighten the noose on Japan itself as basing becomes available.

Slim and his lads look like hell, but they are elated that nobody got hurt and the Japanese are reeling. Everywhere they looked were dead bodies in heaps and the few live Japanese that they faced were not the foes that they have come to fear. The Japanese will not surrender and are fighting to the bitter end, which Slim hopes is right around the corner. The 2nd Marine Division has just about shot it's bolt as have the other units in the Cagayan area and they need rest and refit. The word is that tomorrow they rest and tonight they stay alert.

After a high speed sprint out of the Bonin area the Mighty Mo's TF is making for Dadjangas where they will refuel, resupply and wait for orders to sail for their part in Operation Noose. Bill is relieved to be out of the waters so close to Japan. They knew that the Japanese had spotted them and were keeping tabs on them, but that was it. He'll be much more comfortable as part of the main might of the USN for the future operations that he'll soon be a part of.

The Germans pulled out of Holland.

Tatibor fell today.

Combat

A naval bombardment of the beleaguered Japanese troops near Cagayan inflicted heavy casualties. The IJA 100th Division took extremely heavy losses from 2 air strikes. The IJA 56th Division had very heavy casualties from 2 air attacks. The IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade absorbed light losses from an air raid. The IJA 102nd Division had very heavy casualties from a pair of air attacks. Allied artillery hammered the Japanese for extremely heavy casualties.

Japanese guns at Andaman Island fired at the unloading ships and the troops storming ashore. 4 AKs took a hit apiece, 2 DDs were hit once each and 2 LCTs were each hit once. The Allied troops had extremely heavy losses. The 118th IJNAF Base Force was struck by 35 X Barracuda, 40 X Avenger II (1 damaged) and 8 X Corsair IV for very light casualties. The 118th was then bombed by 90 X Liberator VI (1 damaged), 30 X B-24J, 41 X Mosquito FB.VI and 38 X B-25J who completely missed their target due to cloud cover. The unloading ships were attacked by 32 X Frances who were intercepted by the LRCAP of 14 X Hellcat II and 7 X Corsair IV. Between the fighters and the AA fire 25 of the bombers were splashed while 8 Hellcat IIs and 2 Corsair IVs were damaged. It wasn't enough though as the remaining 7 Japanese planes dropped their torpedoes and an LCT was struck by 1 of them, sinking it. The assault took the base, destroyed a Grace and both sides had heavy losses. The 118th IJNAF Base Force has ceased to exist as a unit.

Toyohara's heavy industry was bombed by 95 X B-29, 61 X B-24D and 16 X P-38J. This marks a shift away from the Nakajima engine factory. It was thought that light damage was done.

Bangkok's port was moderately damaged by 6 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed, 3 damaged) and 13 X B-25J (13 damaged). There were a couple of secondary explosions claimed and personnel losses were heavy.

At Naga the Japanese artillery bombardment caused light Allied casualties and the Japanese took heavy losses from the big Allied guns.

More ships arrived at Dadjangas in preparation for Operation Noose.

Slim is busily cleaning his weapon for tomorrow's attack. Some troops have been pulled off of the line for rest so he's wondering how it'll go with a reduced attack force. Supposedly the remaining Japanese are on their last legs, but Slim wonders where he's heard that line of BS before.

Stick is disappointed that the Japanese have made no attempt to attack Legaspi even when there are ships in the port. Maybe the guys were right when they suggested that he was the reason they hardly ever even see a Jap plane. One of the guys said, “Didn't Teddy Roosevelt say 'Walk softly and carry a big stick' or something like that.” Of course the pilots had a good laugh over that one.

Jay is told by one of the guys in his squad to be ready to move out on a patrol in 15 minutes. They are to assemble in the usual spot. When he arrives Jay sees that he's the only one there and he waits a bit. Still nobody arrives and Jay begins to wonder what's going on when suddenly he hears “INCOMING!” and as he dives towards the ground he hears laughter as the water balloons pelt him. “APRIL FOOLS!” is the next thing he hears.

Yesterday Nurnberg was hit by over 1,000 US 8th AF bombers.

Operation Clarion was launched by the Allies. Over 10,000 air attacks on German communication centers in central Germany will be made.

The US 5th Army took the upper Reno Valley between Bologna and Florence.

The US 1st and 9th Armies linked up at Lippstadt cutting off over 300,000 German troops in the Ruhr area.

The US 1st Army entered Hamm, 60 miles NE of Essen.

The Russians took Sopron today.

Combat

The Old Gals opened the day with a naval bombardment of the Japanese forces near Cagayan inflicting very heavy casualties on them. The IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade had moderate losses from an air raid. The IJA 100th Division suffered extremely heavily from 3 Allied air attacks. The IJA 102nd Division had extremely heavy casualties from 2 air strikes made on it. An Allied assault took hug swaths of ground and inflicted extremely heavy losses on the Japanese while sustaining moderate casualties of their own.

An Allied fighter sweep of Shimuzu by 47 X P-51D met with no opposition.

An air attack on Toyohara by 82 X B-29, 57 X B-24D, 16 X A-26B, 30 X P-47D and 13 X P-38J did light damage to the port, heavy damage to the Nakajima engine factory complex, there were 2 fuel explosions and another secondary explosion seen.

Nagoya was swept by 51 X P-51D who sliced in on 26 X Zeke and 21 X Frank like a scythe cutting through the grass. 2 Mustangs were lost and another was damaged as they shot down 25 Zekes and 14 Franks.

Gili Gili was struck by 44 X B-24D, 43 X B-24J and 10 X Spitfire VIII for moderate airstrip damage, light damage to the port, a secondary explosion was reported and personnel losses were moderate. The South Seas Det. was hit by 27 X B-25J, 27 X A-26B and 3 X Kittyhawk III for very heavy casualties. The IJA 21st Division was hit by 15 X B-25J, 16 X A-26B and 1 X Kittyhawk III for light losses.

At Naga the IJA 116th Division was bombed by 69 X B-29 (1 damaged) and it sustained moderate losses. The IJA 16th Division was blasted by 233 X B-29 for very heavy casualties. The 130th IJNAF Base Force had heavy losses at the hands of 24 X B-29. Japanese artillery tried and failed to harm the Allied forces. An Allied attack failed to take any ground and both sides took extremely heavy casualties, though the Japanese suffered more heavily.

At Buin the 140th IJN Base Force was hit for very light losses by 42 X B-25J.

On Andaman Island the Allied attack eliminated Japanese resistance with heavy Japanese casualties. The Allies had extremely light losses and the base has been declared secured.

There are more ships scheduled to arrive at Dadjangas for Operation Noose tomorrow.

“I liked the water balloons a lot more than this,” says a blood soaked Jay. He's shaking like a leaf and somebody opens Jay's canteen for him. Jay is unhurt, but one of the squad members was torn to shreds by a mortar round and Jay tried to help him. When a medic finally appeared the man was dead and he checked Jay for wounds before leaving. After the bitter fighting ended the men slowly withdrew to their starting positions.

Slim and his lads are awaiting supplies of ammo to come forward. They were surprised that the Japanese opposition to their front seemed to melt away under pressure. Slim is happy that the brass seemed to finally get one right although he wonders if all of the units had been thrown into the attack if there would be any Japanese left. “Alright,” he says to the lads, “Let's get to digging our new homes. Make 'em deep like your lives depend on it because if the Japs come it will.” The usual grumbling is heard as they get to work. Slim is proud of his platoon as they all know and do their jobs well, but if he didn't tell them they might get lazy.

The British 2nd Army reached Munster.

The American 9th Army took Recklinghausen.

The US 1st Army took Fulda and Kassel.

Soviet troops took Nagykaniza and now control the oil production region.

Combat

A pair of IJN MSWs located and commenced sweeping a mine field at Teloekbetoeng.

A naval bombardment of the Japanese near Cagayan caused heavy casualties. The IJA 100th Division was struck by Allied air assets 3 times for very heavy losses. The IJA 102nd Division was hammered twice for very heavy casualties. An Allied attack caused extremely heavy Japanese losses while the attackers barely suffered a scratch. With the elimination of organized Japanese resistance in the area eyes now focus on Leyte.

Nanning was attacked by 78 X B-25J and 50 X P-38J. The Japanese threw 1 X Zeke, 2 X Oscar, 1 X Tojo and 1 X Tony at them and they were all shot down without reaching the bombers. The flak damaged a Mitchell as they hit the airfield for heavy damage, many secondary explosions 9 Helens, 6 Peggys, 2 Topsys, and 2 Dinahs were destroyed while personnel losses were very heavy.

Tavoy was bombed by 151 X Liberator VI (5 damaged), 40 X B-24J (1 damaged), 18 X Thunderbolt II and 10 X Spitfire VIII for very heavy damage to the airfield, light damage to the port, a large number of secondary explosions were reported and casualties were heavy.

The IJA 31st Division underwent an air raid by 30 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed, 4 damaged), 27 X B-25J (2 downed, 8 damaged) and 3 X Thunderbolt II sustaining heavy losses.

About 79 miles S of Kiungahan the SS Tilefish penetrated the screen of 4 X PG and hit an AK with 3 torpedoes. Somehow the crippled and burning ship managed to stay afloat. After reloading her forward tubes she found and attacked another AK under escort by 4 PGs. Sh hit her target with a torpedo causing a fire to break out.

At Naga a Japanese artillery bombardment inflicted extremely light casualties on the Allied forces. In the meantime Allied artillery hit for very heavy Japanese losses.

The SS Growler lost her battle to get home as the crew abandoned her and then she was scuttled.

Slim was surprised at how easily they were able to advance today, it made yesterday's attack look tough. Nobody in the platoon was even in serious danger as they moved forward. Where have the Japanese gone to he wonders. Are they really shattered like the scuttlebutt says? Later the word is passed that they are going to have hot meals, showers, a dry place to sleep (if the weather permits), worn out equipment will be replaced and new uniforms are to be issued. Slim has to pinch himself to make sure he isn't dreaming. Could they really be getting some time to refit and rest?

Jim is suffering from boredom as there's nothing for the 100th Sea Bees to do other than trade with the Army and Marines. The Marines are tougher to deal with and they have less of interest. Jim wonders when some ships will arrive to get them off of this lonely rock.

Gene keeps trying, but his old boss is reluctant to release a worker as the yard remains very busy. Finally Gene thanks his old boss for his time and hangs up. He then gets out of his chair and goes to speak to the project head and tells him that he's butting his head against a stone wall. His boss tells him to relax and that he'll take care of it from here.

Jay squatted as low as he could get as Japanese shells impacted all around his company's area. He feels that he could dig all the way to the other side of the world to escape this madness. Suddenly the mortar rounds stop falling and he takes a peek around. The area is still and he hears the call for everybody to stay in their holes when suddenly the screech and rumble of bigger shells announces that things are now getting worse. Jay is showered with dirt and all he can do is cowering in his hole and pray.

The Russians closed on Vienna.

Masbate Island was occupied by the Allies

A PBM spotted an AK 23 miles S of Osaka and claimed a hit.

At Toyohara an AK ran into 3 mines, sinking it. The SS Whale hit an AK nearby with a torpedo, starting a fire and then she was severely punished by the 3 PCs escorting the ship. Now with heavy systems damage and heavy flooding she will make for Shikka. A CAP of 14 X Zeke, 14 X Irving and 5 X Frank tried to repel 94 X B-29 who attacked the resources for light damage. 5 big bombers went down and 26 others were damaged by the fighters and AA fire. 1 Zeke (9 damaged), 1 Irving (6 damaged) and 1 Frank (3 damaged) were shot down by the Super fort’s defensive fire. The crews want to know where their fighter escorts were. The CAP now comprised of 5 X Zeke, 13 X Irving and 4 X Frank arrived in time to tangle with 10 X B-24D and 7 X P-51D. 2 Zekes, 1 Irving (2 damaged) and 1 Frank were splashed and 3 Liberators and a Mustang were damaged. An AK was hit by 2 bombs that set a fire and did heavy damage. Another attack made up of 69 X B-29 (2 damaged), 46 X B-24D (1 damaged), 13 X A-26B (2 damaged) and 11 X P-51D (1 damaged) rolled in and 7 X Zeke, 11 X Irving and 2 X Frank opposed them. 2 Zekes and 5 Irvings (1 damaged) were killed as the bombs rained down.

AK Taihaku Maru 12 shell hits, 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
The B-29s were ordered to make a city attack on the resources, which they did in the morning, and then they attacked the ships in the afternoon, without orders to do so.

A strike by 8 X A-26B and 2 X P-51D 31 miles S of Toyohara attacked an AK and the vessel absorbed 12 shell hits and a bomb hit, setting it on fire.

At Bangkok a few MSWs found and started sweeping a minefield.

Tavoy was the target for 142 X Liberator VI (5 damaged), 46 X B-24J, 16 X Thunderbolt II, 10 X Spitfire XIV and 10 X Spitfire VIII who did very heavy damage to the airfield and port, a very large number of secondary explosions were claimed and casualties were heavy. The IJA 31st Division was hit by Allied aircraft and had heavy losses. 4 X Mosquito FB.VI were damaged and 2 B-25Js were destroyed with 12 others taking damage. The IJA 128th Ind. Mixed Brigade had heavy casualties and the attackers had 2 Mosquito FB.VIs and 4 B-25Js damaged in the attack.

Manila was struck by 46 X B-17E (2 damaged), 92 X B-24D (1 downed, 9 damaged) and 18 X P-38J. The airfield took heavy damage as did the port, a fuel tank blew, there were many secondary explosions and troop losses were heavy. An AK was hit by 4 bombs in the attack for heavy damage and was burning.

At Naga the IJA 16th Division was attacked twice by Allied planes for heavy casualties, A B-25J was shot down and 6 others were damaged in one of the raids. The IJA 103rd Division escaped harm and damaged 7 of the 8 Mitchells that struck at it. Later the 103rd was hit by a few Liberators for light losses. Japanese artillery did no damage and the Allied barrages dished out heavy casualties.

At Buin the 140th IJN Base Force was attacked by 48 X B-25J, but they missed their target by a wide margin doing no harm.

A TK ate 2 fish served up by the SS Besugo 142 miles SE of Shanghai despite the 3 PCs escorting her. The ship was heavily damaged and on fire.

FDR monitors progress in the PTO and secretly wishes that the Japanese would fold under the growing pressure that they're under, as the Germans are doing in the ETO. For that matter he can't understand why the collapsing Germans continue to fight on and he makes mention of this. An aide brings to his attention the conduct of the war with the Russians and he then knowingly thinks that the Germans, deserved or not, are reaping what they sowed earlier in the Soviet Union.

Jay happily swigs on some water from his canteen as outgoing artillery rounds and Allied planes pound the Japanese. The few rounds that were incoming landed far short of his unit's position and he's content with the way things are right now.

Chris wearily heads for a shower after having flown a CAP mission in the afternoon after having spent the morning being spotted for launch should the CAP need reinforcing. He thinks of a cousin of his that is a Marine and Chris wonders how anybody can cope with the conditions he's heard about that infantry suffers through.

The US 3rd Army took Suhl and Gotha.

The British entered Osnabruck.

The French captured Karlsruhe.

Hungary has been liberated.

The USAAF hit Kiel with 700 bombers.

Camp Ohrdruf was liberated by the Americans.
