Sweeps for pilot training

Post by morejeffs »

I have seen (on the forum) some comments about using sweeps to train.
What attributes get trained? What altitude should I sweep at?

Thanks....

As to attributes trained, you'll see gains in experience, air, and defense when training on sweep.
If you're training, just set your groups at 10K feet (with 100% training, and range 0. Simple but effective answer.)
If you're talking about an ideal sweep altitude for real sweeps, then it depends greatly on the type of airframe you are sweeping with, along with the type of opposition you expect to encounter. No simple answer on this one.

Thanks for the helpful answer

Altitude is for training purposes.

How does sweep compare to escort for bumping up air?

Also....Does sweep at 100 feet make sense to build up some strafing units?

Sweep mainly trains air/def skill at all altitudes > 100ft and mainly def/strafe at 100ft.

My training method of choice for fighter pilots is:
1) train up to 60-65 air skill with escort training (at any alt)
2) then switch to sweep training at 100ft to train up def/strafe

(I change between escort and sweep to better distinguish between the different training phases)

Within 2,5-3,5 months per unit you train up to 50-55exp/70air/70def/50-70strafe, thats all you average fighter jock needs.

Sweep training is good to switch to once overall experience gains have leveled off from escort training.

As an Allied player, I switch to low naval or low ground training for both my naval and army fighter pilots over strafe. Your second generation fighters all carry one or two 1,000 pound bombs and pilots with these skills are useful and make your fighters deadly ship killers. This will also increase your defensive skills. Frankly, I find strafing to be about the most useless skill in the game. I did some testing of this early on and it is bombs that do the damage-even when attacking at 100 feet.

Just my personal taste.

The Allies get a lot of large kingfisher squadrons early on. With the critical shortage of Navy fighter pilots and units to train them. These units were the ones I used to train up Navy fighter pilots. Your only choice is to set them on sweep, but it trained them in air fighting skills well enough.
