shadows creating galaxy error

Post by Beelzial »

ok, so I start a new thread. ;)

Here's the error message I get as it tries and fails to load when creating a new galaxy:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Regarding the DxDiag and Crash log file... you'll have to explain to me how/where to retrieve those.. I'm not computer savvy.. [:D]

The Net 4.0 and XNA seemed to install fine. But I will check out that Neat Cleanup tool in the meantime.

I'm using Win XP pro btw.

Hello, please see the FAQ here on reinstalling .NET and XNA. Please give those one more try manually to see if that changes anything.

DxDiag instructions here:

RE: shadows creating galaxy error

Post by Beelzial »

Well, I tried the Net cleanup tool thing and then reinstalled Net manually. I also reinstalled XNA manually. Still getting the same error....

And the loading time is just horrendous, first the loading time to get the game up and running, takes almost ten minutes. Then another 10-15 minutes loading before it finally crashes with the error message as it tried to create a galaxy. (My computer is pretty okey, at least it never gave these kind of loading times with Distant Worlds before..)

Also, I'm not getting any music at the menu screen... but the music stopped working since the Legend expansion and I haven't bothered about that since I usually just play songs with winamp when I play games anyway. But even though the music stopped working with Legends, the game itself worked just fine. I saw in another thread that the windows media player was an issue when it comes to this, but nothing changed when I installed the latest version of WMP. (I had an ancient version.)

And if you want me to reinstall everything a third time, please elaborate in what order you want me to install it all. And should I patch the game at some stage? And do I need to install the old Net versions for each expansion when they ask? Or can i just skip them when they ask me to and install the latest Net version when I install Shadows?

I did the DxDiag though...

RE: shadows creating galaxy error

Post by Erik Rutins »

Hi Beelzial,

That is certainly not a normal loading time at all. I'm concerned that sound doesn't work. Have you tried updating your 2010 audio drivers and making sure all your audio devices are properly installed and enabled?

We've had it working fine on a Windows XP SP2 test system here and it runs quickly. Is there anything unusual that you may have done to customize your system?

Regards,

Just noticed your CPU and graphics hardware - an Intel ATOM and ION, is this a Netbook of some kind? I can't say we've tested on that exact hardware. I believe that's on the low performance end compared to desktop/laptop CPUs and chipsets? Have you tried any other XNA-based games on this system?

RE: shadows creating galaxy error

Yep, I installed the latest Nvidia video/HDaudio comprehensive drivers for my card just 2-3 weeks ago. I had an issue with another game I play and those driver updates solved it for that one. Music/sound works fine in everything else I play on this computer.

And nope, haven't done anything unsual as far as I can recall...

A side not tho that I've forgot to mention. When I installed the Return of the Shakturi expansion, I got an odd error message AFTER it had said it had installed successfully. It did this both times I tried to reinstall the game since the Shadows issues. To be honest, I can't recall if i ever recieved this odd error before when installing this expansion. But it worked fine installing Legends and Shadows on top of it
afterwards anyway. The Shakturi expansion I installed from a disc, but it's not scratchy or anything wrong with it as far as I can see. What the error message said I'm not sure, but if I will have to reinstall it all again I will save that one too and show it to you.

You seem to be reporting the same issue than Antiscamp:
tm.asp?m=3330816

Both have the regional settings set to Swedish. Could you please follow Erik's suggestion for setting them to US English?

It's unfortunate that the latest audio driver is from 2010. Does sound/music work for you in all other games and applications? Have you played any other demanding games, especially those based on XNA, on this system?

I would be curious about that error message. If you install just the base game, does the sound work?

@VPaulus
I think these are different issues. But I did try to change into US English just to be sure. Did not work unfortunately.

@ Erik Rutins

Okey, I've reinstalled it all for the umpteenth time now.

This is how I went about it:

1. I used the Net cleanup tool and removed all old NET versions.
2. I install the base game including Net 3.5. The Game loads quickly
and runs fine. But there is no music. Silent Worlds... ;)
3. I do not patch the base game but install Shakturi directly. It
installs successfully and I press Finish. A big ugly
error message pops up from nowhere, and I pretend nothing ever happened
and continue...
4. I try to run Shakturi to see if it works anyway, and it does!
5. I install Legends, and I do it successfully (without any ugly
error window popping up afterwards mind you..!)
6. Then I patched Legends and installed Net 4.0 and ran the game. And it worked. (But this is nothing new, remember
I have been able to play this game up until this expansion on my little machine
with a 1400 stars galaxy, without any problems whatsoever.)
7.I install Shadows with XNA. And it installs successfully (no error message this time either.)
8. The moment of truth.. I try to run Shadows... and... no... it doesn't work. I get the same old
error message as the one I first posted when it tries to create a galaxy....

To be honest, I don't play a lot of demanding games. Distant Worlds Legends is probably the most demanding I play, but it has worked properly on the largest map even. Yep, I have no sound/music problems
with any other games/applications.

Yeah, it is very odd that it says the driver is from 2010. I may have to investigate further about that. Yet, I don't really think the sound issue is what causes the game to crash since I can play Legends
without sound.

The weird error after installation of the Shakturi expansion however is rather disturbing... even though the game works... I took a screenshot of it but I don't know how to upload the picture here, but it says something about memory and ends with "The memory could not be "read"."
Isn't it really odd that it gives an error of that nature, yet the game works afterwards? It's the Shadows expansion that breaks the game for me.

Regarding the XNA thing (what is this thing anyway? what does it do?) I have no idea if I have any other game that utilize it. Do you know of any freeware game that uses it that I could download and try out just to check if it's the XNA that makes shadows unplayable for me?

Hi Beelzial,

Thank you for that detailed reply. Could you e-mail me that screenshot of the error to erikr@matrixgames.com please?

Shadows as you may know has a new graphics engine, which makes it perform much better but also makes it a bit different from previous versions. I'm sure that's the difference that matters here, and it could be that it's more sensitive to sound issues. However, I'm not sure yet why exactly the sound would not be working from DW on if Windows Media Player is installed and working (as you said it is).

I will investigate this further together with Elliot this evening and we'll get back to you ASAP with suggestions.

Hi Beelzial

Sorry about your problems starting Shadows [:(]

Can you please check whether you have Windows Management Instrumentation service running on your machine?

To check this open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. In the list of services you should look for one named "Windows Management Instrumentation". The status column should say "Started".

If this is present in the list but not started, please click the "Start" link to the left of the services list.

If Shadows still will not start and you receive the same error, then you may have a broken installation of WMI. You can use the tool at this link to fix it: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairwmi.htm

If "Windows Management Instrumentation" does not exist in the services list then you will need to enable it in Windows.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks
Elliot

Sorry to hear that still does not fix things.

Tomorrow we'll be releasing a hotfix that may fix your issue. When released, please give this update a try and let us know if it helps.

Hotfix fixed it!!! Thanks a lot guys! [:D]

Still, the music is not working, I noticed in another thread that you have to check so that WMP is "enabled" - how/where do I go to check if this is done? Because I think this may very well be my problem, other than that I could only guess it's my audio drivers...
