Guadalcanal as Allies - where are my Fuel & Supplies

Post by Lonewolf »

Previously in the old War In The Pacific in similar small scale scenarios, all the Allies supplies/fuel will show up at Brisbane and Noumea. There are so plentiful that you almost never run out. Now in WITP:AE, fuel and supplies are in short supply. How can I get more? Where are the settings or things I need to do to get the juice flowing?

adjust your gameplay to move available F&S in protected convoys to where it's needed. Historically, Guadalcanal was 'operation shoestring' for the allies, even more so for the IJ. one suggestion i might make - don't set your TFs, especially transports, to 'full refuel', load them & give them 'min refuel'. It don't do no good to have transports w/ full bunkers, while combatants can't find a drop of fuel. Your combat TFs can glom fuel from transport TFs in the same hex w/ the 'refuel at sea' button.

Aside from the Abadan to India (Karachi) fuel supply line, your best fuel source is the US which produces more fuel than you could ever need. Just keep those tankers moving (mostly from the West coast, it's shorter) and use xAKs as well if needed. The US is also a bottomless pit of supply, but it's too far away from the Coral Sea to be of efficient use. Your supply sources are NZ and OZ but you must keep them in fuel for them to produce. Oz never runs out of resources and you only need to move resources east in the NZ isles (Dunedin to Welly). India is a supply source but keep shipping fuel there so that she optimizes production. Keep shipping supplies, fuel and resources to Pearl as well, and resources from Hilo to Pearl too. Supplies and fuel don't show up at Noumea or any other non supply source magically, you have to put them on boats and get them there. Hawaii produces some of the supplies needed there but can not keep up with demand, and you should be using it as a spoke to supply other islands in that region and fuel to your pit-stops between the West coast and the Coral Sea theatre, whatever those pit-stops are, such as Christmas Island perhaps or Oilers loitering in your secret locations.

One more point, you only need fuel at Guadalcanal if you're going to maintain TF ASW, minesweepers and the like operating there, but expect a cruiser force to visit and sink all your stuff.

Is there no Guadalcanal scenario in the lizard version of WitP? Because thats the scen. the OP is referring to. [;)]

Lonewolf, if it makes you feel better, the Japanese situation in that scen is much much worse. I found myself draining xAKs for their
fuel to keep operations going at times. That tactic works for the Allies as well btw, if you experience a shortage.

Here is a specimen of Corucia Zebrata of the Solomon Islands. They taught me everything I know and I am never wrong.

Good thing the mammals rule here on Earth. Warm blooded, cute, fuzzy - adorable.

Cold blooded bipedal lizards acting out their inadequacy issues by fire and sword? Some spacefaring species could use a time-out.

Ah then you had better luck with your teachers than I had. Those comic book dogs tell you a whole lot about WWII, but they are more concerned with canned food than anything else. Guadalcanal is a nice place because of all the trees I hear...

Back on topic:

Sydney is for fuel - Brisbane is supplies. The scenario is supposed to be parsimonious - I've gone to November and I'm still managing convoys and huntin' around for hulls and watching Base numbers like a hawk.

Do the best you can - get The Stuff from Oz to Noumea, E. Santo, Guad & PM. I want to see if I can take or threaten Buna by New Years, but we shall see...

There are few in the old WITP. One of them you start the game around May 4 when the Coral Sea took place. Most of them ends around mid 1943. Being a small map, supplies were ample to Noumea and Brisbane for the Allies, Truk for IJN. There was no problem even if you allow Full Refuel for everything. Production and supply are mostly irrelevant there since you are in the small area and it is not a Campaign. Then in the old WITP both AK and AP can handle troops. Now some AK cannot load troops and that change the plan somewhat.

Things seems to get better at Noumea after about a month of game time. The Japanese is not landing anything on Guadalcanal yet so there is no rush. For some strange reason, IJN have a large force east of Port Moresby crossing that Owen Stanley range. That is a bigger problem right now as the Australian and US troops are mostly under the wrong command to be loaded.

It makes me feel good when an Allied TF catches 3 unescorted IJN supply TFs unloading Tassafaronga and wipe them out. [:D]
