I think I'm looking for an opponent... again... poor me

Post by Erkki »

Hello,

Being recently freed from many my Real Life related activities, I'm starting to have the feeling that I need to conquer half the world again. As The Evil Empire of Japan!

I like to play the game more or less "historically". You will not find me abusing any game mechanics nor invading Hawaii or conquering all of India or sacrificing all of the war production for aircraft building and R&D. Or abusing historical hindsight at every point, tactically, strategically, economically. I dont consider myself a very good player, and I dont believe I would enjoy a very competetive opponent who would committ into CanoeRebel-esque measures from day one. I would probably have to give up within the first half a year.

I should be able to average approximately turn/day but I cannot guarantee that every week. You can probably expect a long run average of 4 or 5 turns a week from me. I'm perfectly OK with breaks from the game as well. The war is long and I am in no hurry to finish it. On weekends I will probably be able to play more than turn a day. I am willing to continue the game as long as it lasts, even if I may at time need to lower the turnrate of keep breaks from the game.

My timezone is GMT+2 which may be cool if you're from the States if we happen to have our gaming times during the same time of the day at our respective timezones - there'd be no need to wait for the other(though playing more than 2 or 3 turns a day might be difficult).

I am also perfectly okay with having multiple opponents(as long as it doesnt effect the turn rate too much). Multiple players a side actually something that I'd be ready to try myself at some point, should I be able to lure someone to accompany me...

This time, I will probably not write an AAR, but I may change my mind at some point.

I have some HR preferences.

-Beta 118 which I have now, the latest Beta patch or a Beta patch of your choice
-DBB equivalent of Scenario 1, Da Big Babes scenario 30, with some modifications that I think that would improve it (more about them later)
-Hex stacking limits and the DBB extended map with more bases

- Historical or unhistorical first turn(surprise on) - Just a word of warning here: as far as I know I've never managed to sink a single ship at Pearl Harbor but lost about 300 planes myself so I may get lucky this time!!!! [:D]
- Allied damage control on
- Sucky Allied torpedoes on
- PDU ON
- Realistic RND on (related, Japan player WILL NOT overdo R&D, at least not the late war überfighters)
- Reinforcements +-15 or more - can be fixed too but I'd like the variation and uncertainty
- No strat bombing in or from China before 1944 or second half of 1943 or beginning of 1943
- No 4E naval (or port?) bombing with Army units(its not really even about the bomb hits but the way 4Es kill and reduce the CAP so easily)
- CAP and Sweep altitude limited to best MVR band. Planes that have best band = lowest band get the extra 5kft. Escorted bombers fly maximum 2000 ft. lower than their escorts' highest allowed alt. No unreachable unescorted bomber stratosweeps to reduce CAP and increase fatigue.
- Nothing flies in the night - debatable but this rule has kept me sane in the past... Maybe allow ground and city attacks in limited scale?
- Silent China?
- (If the game reaches this point, way or another) no non-Soviet Air or Ground units in Soviet territory. Naval task forces are Okay Comrade!!
- Submarines and other non-CV TFs need to have at least 2 patrol points - with single-hex patrols they dont consume any fuel if they dont get enemy contact... CVs at least burn fuel if their planes fly. This might have been fixed to later game versions, but is the case at least in my beta 118.
- Only Glens can operate from submarines
- Japanese CVEs: heavier CV planes like D4Y, B6N, Grace(forgot the designation ) cannot operate from CVEs - only D3A, Zeros and the 2 biplanes - they couldnt do that IRL either

- I'm also willing to start new house rules or other agreements during the game as the rise needs - both rules that effect both players as rules that effect only either one, as or if the need for them rises. Enjoyment of the game should be in the priority of the game for both players.

- Feel free to suggest a HR of your own!

Here follow the changes that I have made to the DBB scenario. I have only touched the aircraft. I felt that many of them had their dates waay off(jap planes) and some really really needed some stat changes - both balance and historical accuracy wise. I will not insist with these changes, but I would like to have them, and I think overall they help the Allies somewhat, at least mid war.

With these changes the IJNAF is from early 1943 in a situation where it should be: totally screwed, as its stuck with the Zero with no replacement in sight for a loong time. IJAAF cant rely solely on Ki-44 any more either.

All Jap planes now have their Japanese names.

A6M3: available earlier
A6M3a: wing fuel tanks, more vulnerable
A6M5b and beyond: slightly more durable than M5(armor windscreen etc.)
J2M: critical altitude risen to where it should be, 20kft.
J2M and N1K: availability dates moved waaaaaay back to early 1944 and late 1943 - no more N1K at spring of 43!
D3A2: same range as D3A1
B7A: date moved back
G4M2: date moved closer, increased range (now historical figures)
P1Y: date moved back
L2D2: available at the beginning of the war

Ki-21-IIb: range increased by 1 hex over IIa, given armor: 1(which it should have) to give Japan player even one reason to keep Ki-21 factories
Ki-44 series: service rating of 2 because thats what they should have both realism/history and balance wise. Availability dates moved back.
Ki-44-IIa: maneuverability lowered
Ki-44-IIb: armor: 1
Ki-48-IIb: bombload doubled from IIa as it should be(but still bad and available only 4/42)
Ki-49-Ia: available from start, but carries only 3 bombs(and thus it sucks and it cannot be abused to quickly build 49-IIa R&D factories any more)
Ki-61 series: Rationalized stats: slightly increased MVR of Ib, Ic, Id, service rating of 2 from Ib onwards, all have same ranges with Ia (Ib and Ic increased, Id decreased). 61 can actually compete with the Ki-44 with the changes to both planes.
Ki-84 series: dates pushed slightly back, slightly increased top speeds

Hurricanes: MVR reduced
F4U: service rating increased to 2 for those variants that had it at 1.
P47: service rating 2 for advanced turbo supercharger

Ha! [:D]

Well, this is just a feeler anyway. He's a good opponent, but no word back yet.

I'll happily concede this one as I really might stretch myself with another one. I do want to play the Allies soon though, and summer is coming!
