Race to Bastogne - Allies.

Post by vj531 »

Has anybody got any tip/strategies for the allies.

My current "run like hell" strategy looks to be lacking a little finesse.

Any input gratefully received.

Hang on to those strung-out forward vic locs, Stephen, deny the Axis those points as long as poss - you're not running from them, are you?

If it were MP - as we planned - and I were Axis, I would would certainly put together a very substantial mobile, armoured battlegroup, to try to sneak into Bastogne using the map edge as much as poss, trying to get there before the Allies can really think about defending it in force. Can you trust the AI not to do this? I would think so. Let me know though. :)

Day 3.

Things are not going well.
Can see little hope.

Has anybody got a result for the Allies?

The trick is to determine the bottlenecks and keep them contested if not closed. Then the Germans cannot breakout on a wide front.

Thanks for that.
I find interpreting the terrain levels quite difficult - its something I looking to put some work in on, as it ruins my ability to read situations and slows decision making once it all kicks off.
I like to create/find pinch points but its not always possible.

I may have to have another bash - the Allies are a good game against the AI.

Thought! When planning and setting up defensive position - it would be good to be able to set the time for test the LOS. This I would have thought would have been done during daylight hours in advance by HQ's in the real world.

Just tried it and got a marginal defeat which I regard as quite good since I was cooking supper and had to delegate lots.

But then I like the delegation in this game - it makes you realise you can't micro manage. I missed the arrival of Rose and ? Booth and had to send them scampering west to try and overtake the krauts.

Thats very good.

I'm having another go. I'm still over fiddling due to the initial Allied deployment, it is a bad habit with me with some scenarios.

I'll let you know the outcome and how bad the defeat is.

Result

Pleased with this result as it was a vast improvement from my first attempt.

From the crosses I see that you indeed found some bottlenecks (Clervaux, Drauffelt, Wiltz, etc.).

Congratulations on the Draw, that's a very good result for the US, I think.

Wiltz was very pleasing as I managed to hold up some real numbers with a very inferior bunch.

Would still like to to use Delay and Withdraw with more finesse.

If you'd been Axis, Stephen, you might have been posting about how frustrating it was that masses of superior units can be held up (in Wiltz, for example) by vastly inferior forces....[;)] Good job, seriously.

LOL so true [:)]

PS: As the Axis I've found that the best bet is to race with your fastest Bn's along the Drauffelt - Witz axis while using the artillery to bombard those locations. With luck, you get to the bottlenecks quickly before US reinforcements materialize and the defenders - if any - are highly suppressed by the arty fires.
