Dog day afternoon....

Post by crsutton »

Viberpol and I just fought a major air and surface battle around Formosa in 3/45. The day ended with a slight tactical win for the Allies but nothing conclusive. The damaged Japanese fleet was about to escape. Until they fell in with the sharks.....

I edited all of the action out of this report except the sub action. All my years on the forum I have never seen this much killing in one day. I feel for Ark. This is just bad news for Japan..

Ouch. Looks a lot like a "Knavey", just without the punchline.

Looks to be a 4- or 5-hex span: 86,62 to 88,60. For the hits, anyway.

That is horrifying.

Lots of subs. Since the super E class had made anti shipping patrols somewhat useless and dangerous, I have been using them more to support the fleet. But I have done this in previous battles without this kind of effect. I suppose there are many reasons. It is late war and my subs have the latest radar upgrades. The area is saturated with patrol aircraft and surface contacts so the DL of his ships was high, many of his carriers had suffered some damage in the day's air combat so were more vulnerable. And just dumb luck, I suppose.

that hurts

but I guess he can, at least, be proud of having some Kido Buttai carriers surviving up until '45

Well, I am kind of proud... [;)]
But I must say last two days of the campaign have been the worst of the whole campaign... [:(]
One of the oddest things of the turn was that damaged DD Takanami got an escort of...
CA Kako [8|]

...and later that day been shelled by superior Allied TF.

DD Takanami, Shell hits 18, and is sunk

Allied Ships

DD John Henley
DD Porterfield

Yes, Ark has (had) done a good job of keeping his core fleet intact and a potential threat. But let's face it, sooner or later the Japanese fleet is going to catch it bad. The Allies just keep getting stronger. But anyone who can keep a viable Japanese fleet through 1945 has played a pretty damn good game.

A quick note. Replenishment TF "do" work very well. My TFs in the same hex with AE types have all restocked all AA ammo and the VR squadrons on the CVEs are sending replacement aircraft to the carriers in range. Very nice design touch.

I play subs hard, with a lot of fleet roles in mid and late war as allies. I have never seen so many combat ships fall to the sharks in one location in one turn. Thats an excellent turn if it were merchants too. Congrats.
