Ndeni is busy but I'm standing down what's left of my 4Es, the last 2 turns cut my inventory in half. Not going to use my carrier air to go after him here either, not with over 100 Zeroes CAPping the target, I lost too many SBDs going after targets which were marginal in the big picture, will have to pick my fights carefully for the next couple of months. It will up to the surface forces of the USN and RN to chip away at the IJN on this front for the next couple of months.

Sub War
S-28, continues her lucky streak of going after juicy targets by putting 2 into the side of Chokai, no secondaries though.

China
Nothing much here the first 2 days except for the daily sweeps and bombing of Chungking.

On the 17th however, the IJA 13th Army, which took Tuyun on 12th August, moves out of Tuyun hex headed north for what I assume to be an attempt to take Kweiyang. Because of a river crossing, it executes a shock attack on the battered Chinese corps (joined just in time by a fresh cavalry corps from Chikiang) that was ejected from Tuyun.

I have a strong area army coming down from Chungking to reinforce Kweiyang and that should have enough AV to make life difficult for the 13th Army, what I'm concerned about now is CTG might turn east towards Chikiang, which is lightly held by an understrength corps. I'm stripping a corps each from Hengyang and Changteh to cover Chikiang. I have a substantial part of the Chinese army in the Changteh-Changsha-Hengyang area and don't want to get pinned by a move on my rear while having to deal with an ongoing attempt to take Changsha.

More curiously a comparison of the combat reports from when Tuyun fell and the most recent one on the 17th indicates all of the major combat formations have moved out of Tuyun, either leaving it undefended or held by another combat unit I haven't managed to pick up. I'm sending a corps into Tuyun to see what's what. The 13th Army is in the middle of hostile territory and I don't see any discernable line back to supply sources, I'm assuming he's got to be hurting for supplies at some point but he figures either he's got enough raw combat power to see off all but the most serious attempts to destroy the army or he thinks there's nothing I can put together to threaten it even in it's current weakened state. I'll post up a screenshot in the next turn and you guys tell me if my hunch that it's out on a limb is correct.

Recon by fire by units of the IJA 1st Army east of Kienko give clues as to where in China CTG is looking at next.

Following action occurs on the night pulse of the 15th/day pulse of the 16th.

I had a Brit SAG of 3 old BBs covering Luganville but ordered it back to the rear to reconfig with PoW's SAG and send the damaged ships to Sydney for repairs. I kinda forgot about the resupply convoy that was still unloading and CTG sent a DD TF in and basically massacred the lot. I can well afford the losses but that was a pretty stupid gimme from me right there. As a consolation Hokaze hit a mine on the way out and sustains heavy damage, slowing down the entire group. The DDs are stranded in no man's land 3 hexes from Luganville come daybreak but I have nothing to throw at them. Zeroes sweep Luganville on the same day but the P-39s and -40s give as good as they get.

Here's a look at what I have to deal with at Changhsha. I don't know if CTG is bringing more or if he's relying on quality over quantity or if even if he's just trying to pin the garrison down so I don't reinforce other parts of the country.

Zeroes sweep Luganville throughout the day but no bombers come in behind them. I didn't record exact numbers but I think I'm on the losing end of a slightly better than 1:1 ratio, still, fighting over friendly ground means I get to save more pilots than he does.

The important thing though, is that VF-71 joins in the defence of Luganville so that gives a bit of freebie intel to CTG. At this point Wasp, together with Illustrious was about 5 hexes south of Luganville, lying in wait for an opportunity to attack targets of opportunity.

The turn starts with PoW's TF visiting Ndeni in the dead of night, they come up against a defending CA force but have the drop on them. Things start well for the Allies as PoW makes short work of Ashigara, destroying her within minutes of the opening of the engagement. However, as the course of the battle progresses, the other IJN CAs get into the fight and proceed to pound PoW and Repulse, the latter goes down under a hail of torpedoes and gunfire while Repulse manages to survive the fight only to succumb to her wounds before the sun rises. The 3 older R class BBs are not spared and the TF breaks into smaller components as the more damaged ships slow down in their bid to escape to safer waters. This will doom some of them later in the turn.

The morning brings with it a concerted effort by the IJN's land based component to hunt down my ships, exactly which ships he was after I do not know as the Netties didn't fly the previous turn and there were targets well within their range envelope. Which is why I think CTG was probably gunning for Wasp after spotting her the last turn but PoW's raid and the subsequent breaking up of the TF in its aftermath probably did more to dilute the intensity of the effort to sink the USN CV than anything else.

Some pretty ballsy moves here by CTG, a little too ballsy imo, we'll see how things pan out in the next turn or two.

SOPAC
Unescorted Betties range as far south as Noumea, this man is on a mission. Illustrious is now moderately damaged with this second more devastating torpedo attack. Haven't decided whether to use her as bait to draw more Betties in or send her scrambling for the relative safety of Sydney. This move shocked me a little to be honest, didn't expect him to send his stuff in like this to be slaughtered. And if I thought I had seen everything more was to come in the later part of the turn.

Time for all group planes to reach interception is 27 minutes

Ammo storage explosion on CV Illustrious

This one took the cake, sending his flattops that deep into Indian country when most of his fleet CVs are at the bottom of the ocean made me do a double take on the combat replay. The remains of Wasp's air group and a substantial number of Army fighters are on hand, together with Wasp's screen, which I think he didn't figure on hanging around. Am considering how best to get at this opportunity to cripple the remnants of the Kido Butai, next turn ought to be interesting, although that depends on KB sticking around.

It's a busy day for KB as its planes spread out to hit targets of opportunity and targets are not confined to sea too. Airfield attacks on Noumea and Luganville and a port strike on Tanna are thrown in for good measure.

SOPAC
I had 2 STFs at Noumea which I set for a night run NE of KB's position in the previous turn in an attempt to intercept it as what I was thinking would be it's retreat after its foray into enemy waters. Turns out instead of running for home, KB continues east till just past Tanna.

Daylight brings with it sweeps of Luganville airfield by Ndeni/Lunga based Zeroes. Unescorted Netties continue to try and bomb my TFs anchored at Noumea but none of the 2E attacks get through CAP. Won't bore you with the details of the combat reports.

KB's air groups spread out to hit targets of opportunity. I'm mainly defending apart from Wasp's airgroup which does decently for a single CV's worth of aiframes.

Email came with the comment "A very bloody day" today and indeed it was, I'm still not sure which side came out ahead.

China
We start with an attack on Tienshui that is surprisingly inconclusive, he's got the armor, I've got the terrain.

Next an attack at Patung, this front hasn't seen much activity for weeks now, I take it as a good sign that CTG is getting frustrated with progress on other parts of the Chinese front and is probing for signs of weakness.

SOPAC
The previous turn's failure of the RN and USN STFs to intercept KB prompted another attempt. This time the RN TF was supposed to move at full speed NE to a couple of hexes above where KB's previous starting position was and cut due east towards Suva. The USN TF had it's CAs detached and reaction range set to 6 and moved to Efate in a bid to put itself in a position to do a reaction interception should the RN TF fail. The CAs were removed from the TF so as to allow the more nimble CLs/CLAAs/DDs a higher chance of surviving any air attack.

As expected but not hoped for, no interception of the IJN flattops occurred, instead a heretofore undetected CA force engaged the RN TF in broad daylight, with devastating results.

The Wasp's air group continue their sterling service by further harassing KB as it moves north towards safer waters. The A-24s of the understrength 8 Bombing Squadron/3 Bomb Group do extremely well this round, punching well above their weight.

As for KB's flyers, an attempt is made on the USN TF anchored at Efate but what gets through CAP doesn't hit anything, although Kates do put another torpedo into Revenge's side.

Well coordinated raid on Luganville, CTG has good sensing of just when to unleash his bombers after multiple sweeps. The same can't be said of unescorted Nell raids on Efate though, the Nells get slaughtered before reaching within sight of their targets.

Here's a tally of losses suffered by the Allies in the process of inflicting damage on KB over the past 2 days. Tracker's pretty good at tracking own side losses but sometimes I do wish Tracker could store enemy airframe kill claims on a turn basis, as it is short of copying down the numbers every turn I don't have a way to compare losses on a turn basis.

Losses
Wasp Air Group
32 of 36 SBDs (does not include 8BS/3BG, which loses 6 of 13 A-24s in the same period)
8 of 15 TBDs
15 of 36 F4Fs

Cumulative damage inflicted (all bomb hits 1k pounders)
CV Hiryu, Bomb hits 1 (last noted as on fire)
CV Hiyo, Torpedo hits 1, Bomb hits 1 (fuel storage explosion noted, last noted as heavily damaged and on fire)
CVL Ryuho, Bomb hits 2 (last noted as on fire)
CVL Shoho, Bomb hits 6 (last noted as heavily damaged and on fire)
CVL Zuiho, Bomb hits 4 (last noted as heavily damaged and on fire)
CVE Hosho, Torpedo hits 1, Bomb hits 2 (last noted as heavily damaged and on fire)

Looks like a good deal from the Allied POV but if you take into the losses suffered since PoW went down 4 days ago game time the loss table for the Allies looks like this.

2 BB - Prince of Wales, Ramillies
1 BC - Repulse
1 CA - Devonshire
4 CLs, 2 DDs, 1 DE

In addition to the sinking of Ashigara and 1 DD, Tracker reports Shoho and Hosho has having gone down. At this point, considering my losses and potential for a couple more Allied ships to join the race to the bottom of the ocean I wouldn't even begin to call it an even exchange until Hiyo and Zuiho were added to that list.

Nothing much happened on the 25th so lumping it in with the 26th.

China
Attacks near Tienshui and Kienko but again status quo remains.

SOPAC
2 I-boats stumble into the minefield at Noumea taking 1 mine hit each.

Something went very wrong for CTG this turn, unescorted (with the exception of 1 raid) Netties came in on Efate throughout the day in a bid to close the airfield and the resident fighters chalked up some serious numbers. 6 pilots became aces today. Tracker reports upwards of 70 Netties downed with the majority being Betties, accounting for FoW I reckon 50 is a number I'd be happy to take to the bank. Allied air losses were very light.

The Army A-24s and TBMs of VT-71 saw action, in the case of the former they went after a CA TF that was hanging around the waters south of Tanna but didn't hit anything. The Avengers on the other hand found the heretofore thought sunk Hosho and put a fish into her side, finishing the job once and for all. It struck me that the CAs were a little too far out on a limb, I've scoured the training squadrons at Noumea for anything that can carry and lob a bomb and they're scheduled to go up the next turn looking for ships to sink. They'll be on a short leash though, don't want to risk my bombers being caught by LRCAP if the enemy ships decide to book it north.

With the sinking of Hosho this turn I've more or less given up trying to discern what's sunk and what's still afloat. In addition to Hosho something else has definitely gone down judging from the ground losses for Vals and Kates but there's too much FoW to be certain of anything so I'll just wait for the dust to settle before giving an update, probably a couple of months game time from now.

Crazy Dutchmen
Now taking bets on whether they'll hold long enough to be relieved.

SOPAC
The first night bombings of this war have occured, Betties visiting Efate.

Efate has also been invaded, fast transports of mostly DDs have unloaded 9k+ troops although no attacks have been made. Combat reports show quite a disabled squads as the Japanese came over the beaches. The defenders are the 3 battalions each of Marine paratroopers and raiders. No forts were built here so I'm on very shaky ground, I suspect CTG didn't count on such heavy disruption on landing and that's bought me a few turns, have started digging in, hope it's not too late. As to why Efate was invaded in the first place I can only guess, depending on how you look at the map, either Luganville or Efate is truked. I don't know what he's prepared to invest to keep it or if it's just a speed bump but I'm going to try and attrit the IJN as much as I can. I see lots of cruisers and destroyers committed to this effort and killing them now means it's easier for me when it's my turn to move forward.

The 2 Yorktowns come out from the yards in 2 days but I can only muster about 75% of my attacking strength due to the horrendous losses suffered by my SBDs throughout the USN and USMC squadrons. Once they get on station though I expect to shut down Efate if it hasn't fallen yet. Almost the entire surface inventory of the USN is in SWPAC/SOPAC waters so I have plenty of ships throw into the fray while protecting the mother hens. Lexington also comes out of the yards at Pearl in 2 days and will make her way down with her battlegroup.

In addition, the air forces of SOPAC are contributing although given what I have to work with it's not much, am rushing down some of the training squadrons of SBDs from Pearl.

2nd wave of landings at Efate. Here's a look at the ORBAT on both sides.

Defending force 9525 troops, 20 guns, 40 vehicles, Assault Value = 230

Allied ground losses:

1st Marine Raider Battalion
3rd Marine Raider Battalion
3rd USMC Parachute Battalion
4th Air Advn Base Force
1st Marine Air Wing
8th Port Maint Engineer Battalion
22nd Base Group

The Allied air forces ding a couple of DDs with solitary bomb hits but nothing serious enough to sink anything. On the other hand, an I-boat catches the crippled Hobart and puts 2 fish into her side, sending her to the bottom of the ocean.

The last day of August and it looks like CTG is all-in on Efate. In addition to units already there, elements of the 23rd Division are spotted unloading this turn.

But it's not all good news for the Empire of Japan, a USN SAG that was on its way to Sydney for repairs was turned around and wades into the fight this turn. It first engages a covering force of DDs headed by CL Abukuma before it tears into a convoy full of troopships. The USN ships are smacked around a bit and most are moderately damaged at worst with none so badly damaged as to be potentially mortal.

SOPAC
Landings continue apace on Efate this turn, looks like it's mostly supplies now. Netties come in over Efate and work over the defenders too for good measure. B-25s and Beauforts out of Noumea try to take shots at the invasion fleet but LRCAP by IJN flyers exact a heavy toll, a Beaufort squadron is rendered combat ineffective in the course of a day. On the other hand, the A-24s out of Tanna put 2 1k pounders each into an xAP and a DD while SBDs start fires with a single bomb hit on Chikuma. To wrap things up, a trio of Avengers sink the AK Sagami Maru with 2 hits out of 3 fish launched.

And here's a look at the ground ORBAT. This attack has cost CTG dear but it has also severely weakened my own forces, they weren't prepped for Efate hence the preparation(-). It looks like we're in a stalemate for the next couple of turns until one side can muster enough strength to push the other off the island.

SOPAC
A dozen PT boats from Luganville pay a visit to Efate in the dead of night and run into a large troop convoy, a third of the boats are sunk but they cause enough mayhem in exchange, they put 2 fish into CA Kako, setting her ablaze and a TB is sunk by gunfire after colliding with 2 DDs from it's own side. Other than that, the Allied air forces score single hits on a handful of ships but nothing life threatening from what I can see.

SOPAC
North Carolina and consorts pay a visit to Efate but for some reason manages to not encounter any of the enemy TFs in the hex and retreats to safer waters in the course of the day but not before its escorts hammer and sink an I-boat that got too close. B-25s are splattered by IJN LRCAP as they attempt to go after enemy shipping in the seas around Efate, I'm running out of airframes and/or skilled pilots to man them.

The Yorktowns are about just in place to cover Efate, with the North Carolina SAG and another consisting of a mixed USN/UK CA group within striking distance of Efate and with looks like 4 IJN BBs sighted in a TF bearing down on Efate from Ndeni the next couple of turns will continue to see SOPAC being very much the focus of this game. However, with the current focus on the New Hebrides area I am also putting plans into motion to move large quantities of men and material into Oz in preparation for a strike into the DEI using Darwin as a base of operations with secondary objectives in the SOPAC AO should the opportunity arise.

Sub War
S-37, stationed a couple hexes north of Efate is DCed by an the escorts of the large troop convoy encountered previously at Efate, she's damaged on the first run but manages to shrug it off and put a fish into the side of CA Aoba in the second attack run. She's moderately damaaged and making for Noumea for emergency repairs.

Then it's S-36's turn, 3 out of 4 torpedoes launched against CA Kako connect, already heavily damaged by PT boats the previous day she's pretty much a goner and glugglugglug sounds would seem to confirm this. And to top it off, S-36 manages to latch on to the convoy again and puts a fourth fish into CS Chiyoda, the cruiser is listed as heavily damaged and Tracker is reporting her as sunk but I'll put the latter as a maybe till I know for sure.

Interestingly, the real life Kako was sunk by S-44 on 10 August 1942 while returning to Kavieng the day after the Battle of Savo Island, part of a 4-ship CA group that was travelling unescorted, she was the last ship in the group and 3 of 4 fish launched connected, she sinks so fast and suddenly that from first torpedo strike to her sinking takes only 8 minutes. Amazingly, only 34 of her crew are killed with her captain and the rest of her crew rescued by the 3 surviving CAs.

A black day for the Allies today, I lose a CV and in a stupid way too.

SOPAC
The night starts off well enough, the previous turn had seen Efate fall and I sent 2 Allied SAGs into Efate to see if they could do a bombardment of the airfield in a bid to close it down. North Carolina's battlegroup starts things off and does pretty well. The other Allied SAG consisting of CAs and CLs spends it's ops points refueling and thus doesn't go anywhere during the turn.

The 2 Yorktowns had been holding position due south of Tanna in what I thought was out of bomber range but CTG had taken the trouble to land an air HQ as well as aviation support with his troops at Efate and he brought in his torpedo bombers at the start of the turn which resulted in this debacle. I don't mind losing CVs but losing one like this really stings. In the first place you'll note dear reader that VF-42 didn't fly. I can't be sure but I probably didn't take Yorktown's airgroup off training which compounds the stupidity magnitude by a factor of 10 and I should have paid closer attention to CTG's force composition on Efate and moved the precious CVs out of harm's way, now that everything within a 18 hex radius of Efate is fair game I've had to move some course tracks further south in order to keep my ships safe.

Efate has 30k odd troops, an air HQ and 2 base forces so it's going to take a while to push these guys out, his control of the seaspace around New Hebrides complicates things a little but doesn't hamper me in any significant way so I'm probably going to stick to my plan to let him go through the trouble of keeping Efate supplied and open for business while I pick at him and prep for the counter attack further north.

B-17s bomb Efate this turn but I don't know if I can close it.

It has been a bloody month for both sides, here's a snapshot of naval losses on both sides since the invasion of Ndeni on 7 August 1942. It's like our little own Guadalcanal, only further south.

Allies
CV - Yorktown, Wasp
BB - Prince of Wales, Resolution, Ramillies
BC - Repulse
CA - Devonshire
CL - Hobart, Danae, Durban, Dauntless, Concord, Detroit
DD - 6

IJN
CV - Hiryu(?), Shokaku(?)
CVE - Hosho
CA - Kumano, Kako (misidentified as Chikuma), TAkao, Ashigara (prior 7th August only 1 CA had been claimed as sunk by the Allies)
CL - Isuzu
DD - 12

(?)- can't be sure of sinking

Some crossed lines of communication have resulted in slow turnover this week. Hopefully we're back on track.

SOPAC
B-17s bomb Efate unopposed, think I've got an even dozen airframes destroyed on the ground, count might be more. Airfield is heavily damaged, now to mix in a run at the port.

Also, a BB force seems to be on an approach to Koumac, probably going to bombard the airfield there. I've emptied it in anticipation and did consider sending up the substantial inventory of USN CAs and DDs anchored off Noumea but figured I have more to lose at this point for relatively little gain.

Allied Sub killboard
Grampus stalks and sinks TK Akatuki Maru north of the Solomons. And I lose the damaged Cachalot as she moves into Singapore while transiting home for repairs, should have paid closer attention to her pathing.
