A Learning Experience (Allied Scenario 2) (No Al_Flynn)

Post by chaussej »

Playing my first PBEM against Al Flynn. During Scenario 2 as the Allies.

House Rules:
Units with permanently restricted HQ’s must pay full PP to cross National Borders.
No strategic bombing in or out of China until : Anywhere from 1941 to start of 1944
No Chinese City bombing until 1944.
No 4xEngine naval bombing below 10,000ft
No dropping of Para Fragments.

FOW = ON
Advanced Weather = ON
Allied Damage Control = ON
PDU = ON
Historical First Turn = OFF
7th December 1941 Surprise = ON
Reliable US Torps = OFF
Realistic R&D = ON
No Unit Withdrawals = OFF
Reinforcement = Fixed
Turn Cycle = 1

Should be interesting as neither of us are very experienced in the PBEM game. Have an idea of what I want to do with the game but first it is going to be all about sustaining myself in the face of the Japanese Imperial Forces.

Should be getting the first turn tomorrow night and we will be trying to get at least a turn a day with more possibly on the weekends.

Thanks, he jumped the gun and sent me the first save last night ... but I am getting ready to run it in a few minutes. Just have to make sure I have the screen capture software set up right.

All right I have sent the first turn back. Al switched up and went with non-historical start of the game so ... I don't know whats coming. Trying to play historically so I didn't screw with too much in the possible combat areas. I did go ahead and start the American pilot training machine ... or as much as I know how. So once he runs turn 1 and sends back the results of the attack I will get back to you.

I do have an idea of what I want to accomplish for the first six months. I am going to establish my supply chain through Palmyra, Pago Pago, Suva, and Noumea. Other than that to start I plan on delaying as long as possible the fall of Singapore, Palembang, and the rest of the SRA.

Fall back fighting ... I know most guys would say just play "Sir Robin" .. "run away, run away" but you'll learn more in your first game experimenting and seeing what works in a fighting defensive mode.

You must get your ships out of the Philippines though - to allow harassment around Java and Malaya ;-)

Well I will definitely use my Tracker to help keep 'track' of what's going on. Someone was kind of enough to get it to work.

I don't want to just pull straight out of the SRA but I do want to try and get what I can out of the region. It'll be a fine line between knowing when to pull out.

You a very likely to have a good time. As the Allied player you will get some good stuff...eventually.

Try to get Prince of Wales and Repulse back to Northern Java or Timor or someplace safer and use them and the USN CA's and DD's from the PI to go after IJN amphibious groups where you are less likely to encounter Bettys or a carrier.

The fighting retreat in the DEI is great fun for both players.

December 7, 1941 ... A Date which will live in infamy

Post by chaussej »

Ok got turn 2 done and the results from Pearl Harbor et al.

Pearl Harbor attack:
ImageImage

So in came the KB and surprised the Pacific Fleet in the harbor. Bombs dropped around the Naval Base and ships got knocked around.
52 bomb hits and 9 torpedo hits and not a single lost American ship. In fact through the entire first day's battle the only losses the Allies had by sea were in Rangoon. Rangoon was the hardest hit location throughout the first day.

Image

Planning on the 8th has been completed and some interesting intelligence has been developed. Midway Island may be invaded in the very near future as a very large Japanese task force is seen in that hex already. Midway will have to be written off at this time but it will be reclaimed ... eventually. I think I am going to allow it to wither and die if he takes it. The ships needed to resupply the base will be attacked by submarine and raids by the American carrier fleet.

In the United States ships are being sent to ports to begin the convoy system to Pearl and eventually Australia. The first reinforcement convoy to establish the supply bases in the Southeastern Pacific is forming in San Diego and engineers and port control units will be sent out to Pago Pago. From Pago Pago we will than head west towards Australia building up Suva and Noumea on the way. I think Palmyra will be the main stopping point between Pearl and Pago Pago.

In the SRA
Image
Force Z was stopped from its suicide run up the coast and is being sent southeast to Soerabaja to rendevouz with the rest of the SCTF in the region. The only exception is the pair of American cruisers in the Philippines are being sent to attack a transport group that has hit Puerto Princesa on the 7th. Last but not least I have pulled all the fighters and torpedo bombers back to Singapore and sent the level bombers to Palembang. All the land forces in the Malaysian area are pulling back to Johore Bahru. Going to be an interesting battle.

Advanced Weather = ON

Advanced Weather turns mother Earth into something akin to the planet Hoth. What this means is that it is more likley for bad weather especally over the open oceans. In particular, float planes launched from surface ships are affected -- being 'grounded' so to speak. This generally nurf's the IJN float plane assets, which are numerious and superior to the USN float plane assets. This does not gnerally affect Patrol Aircraft like Mavis/Cat's ... This also does not affect CV launched Naval Search missions.

So one side affect is if the IJN stray out of Mavis range and totally depend on float planes .. it is quite possible to get the first shot in a repeat of 'Midway'. One thing to do to counter Advanced Weather is to put 10% of the strike squadrons on Naval Search. The strike package might get grounded but the NavSearch package will not be grounded in bad weather, and they will help increase detection level so critically needed in a CV battle.

I have 2 PBEM games, and both IJ opponents decided they wanted "Advanced Weather = ON" In both games I won serious CV victories getting first shots in waters out of Mavis range -- much to the chagrin of my opponent [8D]

Good Luck and Happy Hunting!

Ok two turns worth of updates coming your way:

CENTPAC:
The KB is already gone ... one small attack of very little damage on the 7th followed by a retreat westward. Lost contact right away and no submarines have been able to spot the enemy. The large force outside Midway turns out to be destroyers escorting a replenishment group. The normal bombardment attack and a withdrawal the next day. Wake has been invaded after an initial air attack of 21 Nellies but the Wildcats had already been flown off to the Lady Lex. As the Japanese invasion force made its way ashore the coastal defense guns get to work damaging three ships including the CL Yubari and setting the AMC Kinryu Maru on fire. The Marines hold on to the landing shock attack as they inflicted around two hundred casualties to the loss of less than a hundred.

Around Pearl Harbor the submarines of the IJN try and make their presence felt but aside from I121 taking a chance at the AVD MacFarland most of the success comes from the ASW patrols of the Vindicators landed from the Lexington to make room for the Marines on Wake. Three separate reported hits on submarine contacts are noted in just two days of duty. Another possible hit came from a patrol Catalina. Three ASW TF have been ordered to patrol to the northeast, southwest, and northwest of the islands with a pair of DD in each TF.

Malaysia
Kota Bharu falls to the Japanese late on the 9th but not after nine bombing raids and a pair of deliberate assaults. The FMSV Brigade surrendered but the remaining two units retreated SW towards Singapore. Along the rest of the peninsula 13 raids attack either Alor Star or Georgetown resulting in the destruction of a single HDML. However the Allies will get a little revenge as 8 naval air raids strike at the IJN TFs between Mersing and Kota Bharu. The CA Mogami is hit 4 times with bombs and the CA Mikuma another time.

Burma
Several air raids attack Rangoon which is well defended by a squadron of Buffalos of the RAF and 1st Squadron of the AVG. 4 Zeros, 5 Sally, 2 Oscars, and 3 Betties were shot down to the loss of 2 Buffalo and 5 H81A3.

Hong Kong
Hong Kong has been devestated through air attacks. In the once exception to our no city attack in China HR, the bombers of the IJA have set the city ablaze with numerous attacks. Why is unknown ... especially since most things of military value have been withdrawn. (Well except the troops but they were screwed any which way).

Philippines
The lack of amphibious capabilities of the IJN is telling as approximately 150 casualties happen landing at the undefended beaches of the Philippines. (Tarawa is just as bad as nearly 70 casualties invade the unoccupied atoll). Submarines of the Asiatic fleet do make themselves known as the S37 and S38 team up to hit the xAK Kotoku Maru with three fish and three shells to put it to the bottom carrying what is assumed to be a base force or engineer unit (engineer casualties) The Allies do lose a TK, AKL, and CMc fleeing the DEI and PI in response.

Overall the combat turns were about even with the Allies losing an ever valuable TK and land but damaging at least two cruisers, an engineer or base unit, possibly 1-3 submarines and buying that ever scarce resource time.

As far as planning and moving around for the 10th.
The combined surface fleet of the DEI and PI having rendevouzed at Sorebaja are steaming north to attack the IJN TF off Mersing and Kota Bharu. 15 ships lead by the Prince of Wales and Repulse will sortie north, engage targets of opportunity before refueling in Singapore and than moving back south to Sorebaja. Heavy air reconnaisance and LRCAP should provide some coverage for this force.

Our first reinforcement convoy is loading in San Diego with a Port Detachment, Base Force, and USMC Defense battalion heading to Pago Pago, followed by a supply convoy. A second convoy is readying for Palmyra while in Austrailia forces are being evacuated from Nauru and Ocean Island to move south to Noumea.
