So are they worried about a sub attack?

Found this little tid bit

On 15 January 2013, the Defense Department’s director of operational test and evaluation released a judgement of the LCS in an annual study. The report said that the USS Freedom was “not expected to be survivable” in combat. Helicopters onboard the ship can’t tow its mine-hunting sensors, so it is to rely on unmanned systems for mine countermeasures, although the systems are not in service, and will not be for several years. Its 30 mm Mk44 Bushmaster II "exhibit reliability problems." The Mk 110 57 mm gun is differently designed on the Freedom Class, which cause vibrations at high speeds that make accurate firing difficult. The integrated weapons systems and air/surface search radar have “performance deficiencies” that affect the ship’s “tracking and engagement of contacts

The LCS program has been the most horked-up acquistion program in USN history. A horror show.

Which is a different issue that whether the ships have a real misison, and if they did could they perform it.

Do you ever feel that we are our own worst enemies? Why build something that doesn't work? How many programs are borked and yet still get funding to proceed? The Air Force has the F-22 the Army had the Bradley project and I think that if the government wants to flush money down the drain they should just give some of it to me.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

Guys,

With all due respect, I did not intend this thread to become a debate on various governmental programs and their (mis)perceived merits or flaws.

I thought the videography in this segment was polished and quite attractive, regardless of the weapons system being recorded.

Sorry to have wasted your time viewing this professional video when it was clear that you were merely interested in imposing your (unsolicited) political POV on this particular weapon system. It will be some time before I post another video link based upon your OT responses.

Have a good day.

It's a pretty ship which doesn't work very well and has no real mission.

How is that "political"? It's engineering and design.

I am a bit confused also, my opening comment was why the dazzle paint scheme, then when I googled the ship to find out what in the world it was intended to do I found that report. how that is disruptive or off topic..... in fact I am still not sure what that ship is supposed to be able to do.

In a day when they build 10,000 ton destroyers, which cost more than a heavy cruiser, at least, (allowing for inflation!) in WWII, did we expect anything less. I fear the US Navy forgot how to build a 3500 ton ship which could do more than run around fast, look pretty, and launch helicopters. They could have had that much firepower updating an DE-1052 with two screws, or a hydro-jet driven by gas turbines.

That will tell you the story, with facts, figures, and quotes from those who done it. It's thick reading, but it's in there. What a cluster. Shows what happens when too much money sloshes around in the Pentagon for a decade.

I didn't mean to get on a soapbox and preach or debate about government programs. I did mean to express frustration over projects that accomplish less than they were intended to. What good is a pretty ship that is nothing more than a target?
