That small picture makes identification difficult.

According to the funnel (smokestack) logo, the ship is owned by NYK (Nippon Yusen Kaisha). The funnel's shape is typical of a diesel-powered ship.

Candidates are: S Class (Sanuki, Sasako, Sagami, Sado, Sagara, Sakura and Sakito Marus) but I am unable to id the proper one.

I've got two other pictures but both prominently show his name.

Let's try this:

Clue #1
He was laid down in March of 1937 for the Nippon Yusan Kaisha Line. He was requisitioned in mid-August of 1941 by the IJN and arrived @ Kobe on August 23rd of 1941 to begin conversion as an auxiliary cruiser. He was fitted with four 140mm single mount guns, twin Type 96 25mm AA guns, one quadruple-mount, one dual mount and four single mount Type 93 13.2-mm machine guns and three single mount 7.7-mm machine guns. Two 553-mm torpedo tubes were also installed.

Thank you. The clue definitively helped because of the "TROM" style. If you want more pictures of her, I have a couple more.

Hi Gilbert,

Please feel free to post the additional pictures. I'll be curious to see if they are the same two that I found. And for those that like this kind of thing - it's just more eye-candy <grin>.

In fact, the original picture doesn't depict Awata Maru 7,397 GRT '37 but the postwar Awata Maru 7,601 GRT '52.

I have attached an enlarged picture of the latter. You can see a radar aerial on the mast atop of bridge, such a device very rarely seen on Japanese Marus during the Pacific War and definitely with a different shape.

But anyhow, she is a beautiful ship indeed.
