Message_Alarm.wav Null Sound mod

Post by Shark7 »

Here it is, a simple mod to replace the Message_Alarm.wav sound file in the game so you have no sound when attack warnings play.

READ THIS BEFORE DOWNLOADING!

How to Install (Updated Universe Instructions):

1. Go into your Distant Worlds > Customization > (ThemeName) > Sounds > Effects folder and make a back up copy of Message_Alarm.wav.
2. Unzip the file into this folder. THIS WILL OVERWRITE THE EXISTING FILE!
3. Start the game, Load your theme and enjoy the silence.

You will still get attack message pop-ups, but the horrid alarm klaxon sound will not play. You will hear nothing at all. This is a 4 second recording of blissful silence. [:D]

DISCLAIMER: You are choosing to download and use this at your own risk and release the creator from any liability for damages that may occur. Even though I have a current McAfee virus-scan installed, you should *ALWAYS* scan any file you download from the internet for viruses yourself.

Even so, you have to admit that would be an improvement the default klaxon sound. [;)]

For some reason, I just thought of an old game, I think it was Dark Reign, which was one of the first RTS's.  They had just implemented control groups for the first time ever in an RTS, you could bandbox some units, hit Ctrl-1, from then on you hit 1 to select those units.  Great idea.  Unfortunately, they had audio every time you selected a control group, a chick would say (in French, I had the French version) 'Groupe de controle numero 2 selectionné'.  After 5 minutes of playing, I was like, 'I just hit 2, and you told me I just hit 2.  Gee, thanks a lot.'  It was so annoying, I never used control groups in that game.

Crusader kings had a really annoying fanfare noise for one of the menus. I modded it out the first day I had it.[;)]

Big bump for this one!

Just downloaded it. Talk about a life saver with pirates on many.

Hearing 4 sirens at once for 4 simultaneous attacks was just a bit too much.

I have a very cool alert sound file, but you are correct. Four pirate attacks and four messages blaring at once... imagine that in real life!
Yeah, this may get a down load.

I'm glad to see people are still finding this useful nearly a year after I released it.

Enjoy the Silence...

Precisely why I made it. I was annoyed by that default Klaxon within about 1 hour of playing the original game.

Glad you like it. [:)]

Thanks for this file. I'm on my second day playing Distant Worlds and was about to turn off all sounds because of that alarm! (:

In my game, I copied and renamed one of the other alarm sounds to replace the very irritating one. Now it just makes a little beep when I get those warnings.

what were they thinking when they added that sound in the first place!? I hope it's the first thing they did when they started doing Shadows to remove that sound or replace it! [:D]

Getting rid of that irritating alarm noise is probably the main reason I originally checked out this modding forum. It's hard to believe that its never been officially replaced.

Due to the fact this sound plays pretty much constantly (the most used sound in the game?) I think a click on/off option in the options screen is in order. Perhaps even a volume slider or sound selection option for this sound would be nice too.

I find the NULL sound to be enough. I always visually see the alert anyway so no need for sound of any kind.

/2cents :)
