Iranian "fighter" Qaher F313...looks fake

Post by Neilster »

I've worked on fighters and this thing doesn't look right. The overall shape is reasonable for a low observables aircraft but it seems too small and lacks the details I would expect even of a prototype. The cockpit looks totally wrong and it doesn't seem to have enough mass. In short, it looks like a fairly shoddy mock-up and the supposed in-flight footage probably a RC model.

And the name even sounds like Queer, which this appears to be [:)]

Edit: I've just seen some more photos and added them to this post and...oh boy...this looks like the prop from a high school stage show.

Cheers, Neilster

Check out that clear-view canopy, that ultra smooth low-observables surface finish and the high-tech and super stealthy back of the cockpit instruments [:D]

They probably should have picked a shorter "pilot" as this one doesn't appear to fit. Amazing attention to detail where the lavishly appointed cockpit meets the canopy (which seems not to have a seal). What's that hokey box plugged into the "jet"? The sheepish looks...I could go on... [:)]

Go on to youtube and take a good look at all the people living in western countries applauding Iran.

Video from the Iranian news agency. Note after about 4:30 in the segment when they fly this thing off a runway. It looks about the size of a small dog compared to the runway:

Also, note the undershots of the a/c. With the exception of the landing gear, totally smooth. Umm...doods? Shouldn't you have some weapons hardpoints under the wings or body for...umm...you know...missiles or something? Either that or (ala F-22) an internal weapons bay? But nope-a perfectly smooth underwing and underbody.

Faker'n fake. [:D][:D][:D]

I built a more authentic stealth aircraft in about 1989. The hypothetical Mig-37 Ferret E. At the time the F-19 Stealth Fighter model was all the rage but people in the know said that if you really wanted to know what the F-19 (or F-117 as it turned out) looked like, look at the Ferret E model.

Didn't you know beards breaks down the face profile allowing the pilot to be more stealthy

I think you'll find the Firefox prop was much better built [;)]

Of course it was since you built it. [:)]

Err...no...the one(s) in the 1982 movie... :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0BmrPrEm7g

It's an adaptation of the Craig Thomas novel and the first half is a pretty good espionage thriller but the flying action lacks all credibility and the John Dykstra special effects that worked so well in Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back didn't with aircraft.

Whoever designed the movie Mig-31 Firefox obviously knew a bit about fighter design and low-observables but the massive intakes and turbo-ramjet powerplants are completely unstealthy. I guess they were included to explain the supposed hypersonic performance of the aircraft.

BTW, the Ferret E I built looked better than the one above. I was really into aircraft modelling in those days. That design was well researched in that rather than being a fighter, the Mig-37 was a hypothetical electronic warfare and stealthy ground attack aircraft with internal (stealth) weapons carriage. It was assumed the Soviets would need to use faceting as they didn't have the computer power to design a stealth aircraft with curved surfaces. The hypothetical F-19 was well researched as well and it was decided that an American design would use these. They didn't realise how long the F-117 had been flying for and as a result it turned out to use faceting.

They've just installed one of these childrens' rides in my local supermarket. Only 20p a go.

Why is the "pilot" wearing a helmet? Is he about to actually go flying? No. Pilots put their helmet on after they are strapped into the seat on real missions. And how bad is that canopy? [:'(]

Is that an analogue dial in the third picture? I love the retro feeling that they've given this aircraft. Not a MFD screen anywhere, make those pilots work out what's going on in their aircraft [:D] And think of the weight savings gained by making this out of plastic, and it's not as though Iran are short of oil to make plastics so that's a definite win. I'm not sure how they're planning to stop it though, there don't appear to be any hydraulic pipes down the undercarriage legs. Unless they use the canopy as a brake chute.

Would there me some sort of reason that all the markings etc are in English rather than Persian?
