Another Of The Vets Gone

Post by tocaff »

As I sit here typing the tears roll down my cheeks because my father passed away last night at the age of 90. He was a man who was extremely calm, even tempered and didn't let bad situations get to him. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He flew as a radio operator in B-29s from Tinian Island's North Field as a member of Crew 32, the 313th Wing of the 20th Air Force, 9th Bombardment Group (VH), 99th Squadron. He never spoke about the war until about 30 years had passed, though when I was very young he let me play with and lose many of the medals that he was awarded for his service He was present on a Super Dumbo flight (observation) when the Nagasaki bomb was dropped. He will be missed and I wish I was more like he was.
Todd

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

Sympathies on your loss, Todd. Your father sounds like a good man to whom our nation is indebted for his service.

Sorry to hear of your loss. There are so few vets left, it hurts to hear of another leaving this world.

Please accept my condolences. Your father sounds like a great guy.

I lost my grandfather recently. He was a veteran of WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. He served as a combat medic. I miss him everyday so I truly empathize with your loss.

Sorry to hear of this.

I remember well when my father died on 6 Aug 73. Didn't know about it for a week as I was traveling cross country to my next assignment at Quantico, then receiving the phone call...collapsing on the kitchen floor. He served on DD696.

You had many years to share in his life and you need to be thankful for that, and I do know that is a difficult thing to do at this time.

My condolences.

Our fathers may have crossed paths. My father was a specialist camera guy and flew with quite a few units around the Pacific as well as did a bunch of photo projects around the US. He was flying in the recon version of the B-29 from Tinian or Saipan for a while early in the 20th AF bombing campaign.

Hang in there,

Sorry for your loss.

I lost my Dad a while ago, but he was a bombadeer on B25s. Flew many missions over Rabal. Got a Purple Heart from getting hit by sharpnal while the plane behind him got a direct hit and blew up [X(].

On a completely different run the Bomb Bay doors jammed open. He never was sure how the pilot managed to land without blowing them all up (otherwise I would not be here lol). He always thought it was so funny that after landing, the whole crew was running away from the plane while the whole base was running towards it :)

On a totally side note, my Great Uncle served in WWI as a cook. When I was very young, I asked him (after watching some war movie I am sure :)) if he had ever killed anyone. He got the far away look in his eyes and told me that they were getting shelled by the Germans durning one of their late war advances so he dove into a crater and there was a german in it already. So he killed him with one of his kitchen knives. After that, I never asked him or my Dad anything about the war unless they brought it up. So I can totally understand your fathers reluctance to discuss things.

My ex father-in-law was an engineer in the Army and landed D+2 on Normady beach. He NEVER talked about the war. All he would say is he land on the beach two days after the invasion and he did not want to talk about it. And that was it. He died never talking about it at all.

I miss them all (including my FiL. He was great, the ex not so much :))

Lost my Army Vet father several years ago; we were losing 1,000 WW II vets a day, but now it's 600.

Sorry to hear of your loss tocaff. I have been reading your WitP AAR and it makes sense to me now why you are as inspired to write by this game as you are. Like most of those who posted above, I lost my grandfather 4 years ago and he was a WWII vet. He served aboard the DD652 USS Ingersoll in the pacific from late 43 to Tokyo Bay. The man raised me as his own, even though he had already raised his own kids plus my mother, and was never once asked to do it. My thoughts are with you, as will be my prayers.
