It's a Town class light cruiser. One of four to go to the Royal Australian Navy. It's not the HMAS Adelaide that was sub class Birmingham and their bridges were different. That leaves the three Chatham class. HMAS Sydney, HMAS Melbourne and HMAS Brisbane. They were pretty much identical.

I have to guess and say the HMAS Melbourne.

The ship is actually it is the HMAS Syndey as you have already stated.

The diagram shown by fodder with Savoia Cross is for days after 10 June 1940. At war start 10 June 1940 Italian aircraft still had the Italian flag at rudder, but that looked like the French airplanes only the color differing.
