RE: Fortress Palembang: Problems and Solutions

Post by bk19@mweb.co.za »

HI all,

I have read with some interest many of the remarks relating to the 'Festung Palembang' defence model.

I should add at this point, I am a beginner Japanese PBEM player currently near the end of my first year of the Reluctant Admiral scenario. Given that this scenario is somewhat different to the stock scenarios it is possible (even probable) that the experience I had with 'Festung Palembang' was not nearly as bad as many have predicted.

Following are the ground combat reports for the period July 1st, 1942 to July 23rd, 1942. Ongoing aerial bombardment occurred but without obvious significant effect so I elected to omit this as primarily irrelevant clutter.

Study of the reports show that the Japanese were building up during this the first two weeks of the battle. What is not evident is that Palembang was also getting surrounded by lesser troops with exits from the city east and north east where I could clobber any remnants with shore bombardment. I expected an eventual retreat.

Ground assaults only began on the 16th as a result of the last units executing a river crossing into Palembang. The main ground assault began the next day.
Further study of these reports show also that there were 3 days of assault followed by 2 days rest and then another 2 days of assault. On this last day, the Allies surrendered en-masse. They did not elect to retreat at all. Palembang was captured and the only damage found was the Oil fields had take 79 hit points. Everything else was in perfect condition. In essence, although Japan spent a month building up and thumping Palembang, I do not personally believe that five days of combat is a significant delay in the bigger scheme of things.

Palembang was the last Allied bastion in Java and Sumatra.

I concede that I had a whackload of troops committed to this operation, but they did not have that much else to do at the time.... for me, it was definitely a tad premature to consider operations in both Burma and Australia. Beside, my opponent had also assembled 'Festung Koepang' that would also require a substantial commitment to weed out. My motive for the choice is obvious.

Before I add the turn reports, I would like to ask the more experience players to comment on whether I was just lucky with the die rolls etcetera (for example).

Could it be done with less?
Is this unique to the scenario?

Turn reports begin:

Revisiting this subject: What was the most damage you saw done to the oilfields and refinery complex on Palembang by defending allied troops?

When does the most damage occur?
- During a retreat or when surrendering?

My opponent told me that retreating (not surrendering) troops from Palembang (1 dutch regiment, several battalions and 2 indian brigades) damaged around 540 oil points.

Would having them surrender lessen the damage they did?

Defending Palembang is a viable option. I consider it viable when playing the Japanese OR the Allies (certainly when playing DBB-C). The problem lies in the way the game models damage and repairs to facilities. Having half of the oilfields knocked out is ok if you are able to speed up the repair process.

You can't.

Anybody know the exact mechanics behind damaging of facilities. I never expected my 40 regular engineer (not combat) squads to do this much damage.

Lots of randoms from what I understand, although there has been long speculation that a Shock attack to take the base is more harmful than a non-shock.

No shock attack was carried out, but I've done several attempts to get the base. These may have accumulated damage(?). I have 360 oil fields operational and 540 are damaged. Are these numbers typical for a Fortress Palembang episode?

No damage to oilfields at all up till the capture so it is all from the final assault. I read that having a lot of engineers present on the attacking side might help avoiding damage. How many squads did you bring?

Yes, I read this too. I didn't bring any additional squads, but the various divisions include quite some engineers. Most of my engineers are still being rebuild at Singapore or committed elsewhere. I hoped this would have been sufficient...
