Thanks. Much appreciated.

I used to live in NC, by the way. I loved going down to the coast from Chapel Hill, especially to Okracoke and even once to Portsmouth Island. Amazing area. Your pic though says it all! Tough place to live year round.

I kick myself now that I never went to visit the NC in Willmington. Silly. Even from the side of the river though she's an impressive sight!

UPDATE: 1 June 1943
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

It's been a good while since I've updated with a look at the ships, air group and ground unit I have followed throughout the game. So now for a bit of indulgence. I do find it really interesting still to see the many uses these units are put to throughout the course of the war.

Shiranui

This destroyer, as I've mentioned before, is the reason I found WITP. My GF works in a small town in Surrey, called Dorking, and there is a very good old model shop there. Dorking Models.

http://www.dorkingmodels.com/

It's the kind of place that is stacked to the ceiling with kits, paints, detail sets, decals and amazing completed sets constructed by the owner. I hadn't built one in years, since my early teens. I loved looking through all of the ships, especially. Lots of small Japanese kits, including the Shiranui. I was reading a book taking place in Japan at the time, and in it there was a Mt. Shiranui. Thanks to the wonder of smartphone technology, once I was intrigued by the name, I looked it up.

From Wikipedia

A will-o'-the-wisp /ˌwɪl ə ðə ˈwɪsp/ or ignis fatuus ( /ˌɪɡnɨs ˈfætʃuːəs/; Medieval Latin: "foolish fire"), also called a "will-o'-wisp", "jack-o'-lantern" (or "jack-o'-the-lantern"), "hinkypunk", "ghost-light", "spook-light", "fairy light", "friar's lantern", "hobby lantern", "corpse candle", "orb", or simply "wisp", is a ghostly light or lights sometimes seen at night or twilight over bogs, swamps, and marshes. It resembles a flickering lamp and is sometimes said to recede if approached. Much traditional, non-scientific belief surrounds the phenomenon, giving rise to the wide variety of names.

After this interesting coincidence I bought the kit, built the ship, and soon thereafter found WITP to try to satiate my returning interest in WWII.

The Shiranui in this game started out with the KB hitting Pearl. She stayed as a KB escort until her first conversion, after which she shepherded AOs around for a while. Then she took up an ASW role and worked the area near Balikpapan if I remember correctly. Currently she's heading back to Yokohama to become a CV escort again, helping ensure the safety of the brand new Katsuragi on her way to Tulagi to join the KB.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This transport has been plying back and forth from the HI to various locations in the extended empire during the campaign. It has hauled troops, supplies, resources, and most recently, fuel.

Currently it's sitting in the port in Osaka waiting for escorts to head back the Singapore with a load of supply, then return with fuel to keep the economy humming. The Aden class especially is being used in this capacity now as they're highly expendable and carry a good amount of cargo.

14th Tank Regiment: 1 June 1943
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This is the only ground unit I've been following. It started in Malaya, helping race down the peninsula and at times cutting off Brithish units before they got to the safety of Singapore. It then was instrumental in the conquest of Burma, heading up into the mountains to help gain footholds along the Chinese borders before the big divisions arrived to push farther into China.

It was then sent to the Pacific where the tank commanders have been relaxing on the beaches of Kaweijalen for the past year. [8D]

This Ansyu-C class xAK was converted to a PB early in the war and has had an active career since. Used primarily as an escort for troop and supply convoys from the HI, it has been to every theatre in the conflict. Later it made several daring fast transport runs to Western OZ and has been used in that role extensively in the Solomons and New Guinea area, based at Rabaul.

On one of these runs several months ago both it and another PB were hit by Mk 14 TT and they have been repairing slowly in the port of Buka. They are about to be sent for the long journey back to Yokohama.

251 Ku S-1: 1 June 1943
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Formerly the Tainan Ku S-1, this is one of the two 45 plane elite fighter groups that starts the campaign on Formosa. They cleaned the skies over Luzon before heading to Malaya, Java, and then Burma, and were equally successful in each theatre. The group has accounted for 193 kills!!!

After the dominance of the available A6M airframes began to wane, I gutted the majority of highly experienced pilots form the group and sent them to other units and into reserve. Another group of pilots has grown in experience with the unit and most are in the 60-70 experience level now, based in Mandalay.

This will be one of the first groups to be allocated the George airframe once it becomes available in July 43.

That is one impressive squadron!!

Just out of interest, I noticed that the group is due to downsize in September 43.

Is it your intention to break up this highly successful group?

Just curious....

I-25: 1 June 1943

This sub is one of my favorite units in the war, and in spite of it's precarious position in the front lines of the Pacific war, it has made it through a few scares to survive into mid-43.

Currently it's working a patrol off the approaches to Sydney, both for recon and the hope of a lucky opportunity. I don't have much hope for the attacking ability of these big cumbersome IJN subs at this point in the war with Allied ASW improving continually, but they do provide good information.

THE ECONOMY: 1 June 1943
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The economy seems to be running along well. I'm up to 1.65 million in HI banked. I'm shooting for a million per year, so that's on target. I've just shut down some airframe and engine production as my pools are getting high for certain airframes that will be phased out soon.

It's really helped that I have the extra HI/LI from China, as well as the resources and oil to drive them internally. Port Arthur is getting dangerously low in both oil and fuel (about 15k for each, I just noticed [X(]) and I'm starting a CS convoy from Singapore right away. I'm definitely making a dent in the oil/fuel stores at Singapore. In the last half year the totals have gone down from over 2 million fuel/200k oil to 1.25 million fuel/25k oil.

My tracker hasn't been working for a while, so more updates on the economy will come as soon as I can get it going again. If anyone notices anything glaring in the numbers here please let me know. It's been kind of econ-by-instinct lately. [:D]

SHIPYARDS: 1 June 1943
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

There are a few more good things coming. Maybe the CVs in mid-44 will still be relevant, but I'm not sure. It kind of depends on how much the newer airframes like the Grace and the Sam can stand up to the late-war Allied planes.

I've been managing the merchant ships extensively, and trying to get tankers coming out a bit faster. So far I've actually decided to keep the flow of small xAK and xAKL coming as they are so expendable and get in the way of a lot of TT the more valuable shipping might take instead. Also, some of the Std-D ships that can convert to TK are really useful for similar reasons.

I'll keep it as an elite group with the best airframes available at that time (probably the George), but with the small group size it will be used exclusively in a defensive role. Of course many pilots will shuffle off to new assignments.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Now, a last, I can continue with updates of the action. I'm a bit behind, but once Jocke has his baby I'm sure i'll have a chance to catch up the AAR. [:)]

SUBS: On the 2nd is a case where putting a few big xAKs into a cargo TF with TKs to carry fuel actually worked as intended. The Paddle hit xAK Syokyu Maru with two TT. It sank like a rock, but the TK in the TF was unharmed and continued on. I-32 on the other hand managed to put a TT into AM Tui. [8|]

The other thing that seems to be working is the big fuel hauling TFs that include an AV. Another sub attack was thwarted by the Bowfin being sighted and forced to dive before getting off a shot near Dongalla on the 4th.

NORTH PACIFIC: CVs head out to take position South of Adak. They will stop to refuel at the base first, then scoot South out of search/recon range 9hopefully, unless he's using any LR B-24 recon planes up here).

BURMA: Nothing to note. Soon I'll update my forts/fields map and show new dispositions of the defenses. It seems like he;ll wait until after the monsoon to move in again. This time I'm sure he'll bring a bit more as well.

SO PAC: Bettys hit the engineers on Nukufetau again, disabling more of them. Then the naval bombardment hit the following night. Nothing destroyed, but more disabled. I haven't decided if I need to bother counter-invading or just bomb it for a while.

On the 4th 69 B-17E hit Torres Island, disabling another 5 squads. [:D] Keep it coming.

I also noticed some heavy use of Portland Roads by shipping lately and the addition of some fighters and a few bombers there. I'll be moving some DDs and a CA/CL TFs over to Milne Bay to be in range should he make a move anywhere. They are plenty of fighters in the area, but virtually no bombers.

SUBS: I-155 got a hit on an xAK near Norfolk Island. Sinking sounds were heard, and it looks like some troops (with arty) were on the ship. Nice.

NORTH PACIFIC: CVs are approaching Adak. A SCTF has already arrived to meet them.

WEST OZ: The Allied troops at Daly Waters have turned and are definitely walking home. Again, this makes me very happy. I was planning to send a bunch of troops to Darwin to try and hold on there for another 4-6 months. Now it is looking like I may not need to rush reinforcements. I'll try to bomb the base to maximum damage so that when he comes back he won't be able to immediately use it.

As a PBEM game goes on, my fear of 100-300 bomber raids increases exponentially with each passing game turn.
It does absolutely nothing for my blood pressure.....[:(]
