15th of January

No action at all this turn. KB spotted heading away from Suva to the NE. Probably returning to refuel.

Musings:

I have no doubt Joseph will return shortly to try and catch some of the convoys en route to OZ. I can´t really defend against this other then getting a good line of naval search up. I have decided to abandon all plans for Noumea right now. I will make an effort at Suva instead. 2 RGT are on its way. If I can hold on to to Suva it will allow me to use Vauv'a as a major naval base. I did not do this in my other game but I can certainly see the benefits of doing so.

Suva is already at level 3 forts and should reach level 4 within 2 weeks. If I can get two RGTs there with some AA it will require a major effort from Joseph. With the proper AA in Babes I don´t think its possible to pound them into submission by KB power without sustaining unbearable pilot losses to flak. Is this a correct assumption?

After some very good advice from Michael (ny59giants) I decided NOT to send both OZ divisions to OZ. Only one will go (will start loading in 4 days) but an armored RGT will accompany them.

First Brit carrier is also on its way to Balboa. After even more advice from Michael I´m also re configuring the setup on all my carriers. I will add as USMC squadron on all carriers.

Lots and lots of stuff to sort out right now! [:)]

The siege for Singapore is finally on. And its looks to be a very short one

Joseph brought 5(!) divisions. 4 more unknown units are moving in on Singers too.

I have been getting a lot of help from Micheal [&o] lately and will start to reorganize my convoys shortly!

SOPAC
KB has left Noumea but I´m sure it will return. I have a Regiment inbound for Pago Pago. Hopefully I can get it onshore before/if he returns. Luganville and Tulagi was invaded. I can´t really do anything in the area right now with KB roaming around. I don´t like that fact that I can´t really do anything about this right now. But there is a bonus to this. If KB is in Sopac its alot of places where it isn´t! [:)]

Looks like Tahiti will be my backup plan in SoPac.

CV RAID?
Perhaps a small 2 CV raid into the heart of Centpac might be in order? Pay a little visit to the HI perhaps? Too risky? I really want to show him there are consequences to his aggressive use of the KB and make him think REALLY hard about using them this far south. Any one with ideas? [:)]

SRA
MKB is unknown but will probably support the inevitable assault on Java/Palembang. This is where I hope to stall him. I´m piling on stuff at Batavia. Going by an email from Joseph he thinks my main effort will be at Soerebaja. He spotted my naval forces there recently. Hopefully he will choose to land on Batavia instead. That will be a nasty surprise in case he does.

I have started withdrawing more surface assets to Christmas Island IO.

CENTPAC
I`m sending an Combat Engineer regiment to Wake. If I can hold on to wake...that would be a HUGE boon for the subwar.

Does "left Noumea" mean you still have a sighting on it or did it disappear? Early on, search unit lack of experience and stormy weather mean KB can sometimes come toward your bases unseen! [X(]

KB can sprint into CENTPAC at full speed and get between your CVs and Pearl Harbour. I would only raid NORPAC or in the IO. In NORPAC, the concern is Netties he may have a few on Hokkaido that can reach the Kuriles and within a day he can shift hoards more. Keep your CVs to the east of Paramushiro Jima and hope to hit convoys going to the first few islands. Set Airfield Attack as secondary strike so that you sting something. Take enough CAs/CLs to fend off any SCTF that might be in the area.

Combat Engineer Regiments are like gold in the early game. You will need them in any assault on fortified islands or landlocked bases. They could be trapped on Wake by an invasion and their AV will not make a great difference to the outcome. If the aim is to build up the forts/airfield I would bring in a more plentiful type of engineer unit and a small tank unit to boost the AV.

With two CVs you risk getting hit by an escorted Netie raid. That said, he may not even have zeros in Cent Pac right now as the group that starts there is given Claudes to begin and almost always has to be moved via ship somewhere to upgrade.

I say go for a raid but keep up a good CAP. Hit Kaweijalen. He may have moved ships back to Truk until there is cover for them, but if not there may be some decent support ships there at least. There will be Nettys, but if there is no real escort you will chew them to pieces. I'm sure with all of the notes Michael has been giving you have extra fighters on the CVs.

You could also send in some surface raiders, like 2-3 DDs based at Wake, to hit the shipping lane between Truk and the HI. This would be a good scout mission to see if there are escorted Nettys as well. If you don't get hit within 10 hexes of the Marshalls you'll know what to expect. If you don't get hit near Truk then get THERE with your CVs and you will cause absolute havoc. Then run NE, not back to Pearl. Maybe have replenishment trailing in the area above Midway.

BBFanboy,
I spotted them at Luganville and then I lost them... Been gone for 2 turns now! Thank you for the advice on the Wake reinforcement. You are right of course. I will keep them at PH instead. Don´t have ANY troops at all to send. I have like 10 PPs in the pool and no unrestricted units to send. Everything at PH and WC is restricted.
I had forgotten just how hopelessly weak the allies are at the start. I have absolutely NOTHING anywhere! [X(]

How the heck am I to make a decision when you to have conflicting opinions? You guys don´t want me to make any decisions I hope? [:D]

I´ll give this a though for a while yet. Didn´t get any turn from Joseph this morning so I think I will have until tomorrow to decide! But I´m leaning towards doing as Erik suggests! Sending a small DD force in advance makes good sense. And if I can spot the KB again in SOPAC I know the worst I can run into is The Kaga + 2 CVLs. I "should" be able to handle that with 2 CVs reinforced with 36 fighters! [:)]

I've learned very quickly how utterly pathetic the Allied side is at first. You can nip at your opponents heels a bit, but you almost always get stomped in the face in return.

I will second sending a small force of 4 or so DDs to scout/attack. That size group seems to do quite well for me, less likely to get spotted on the way in, and just enough firepower with the torpedoes to make them dangerous. My best successes as Allies have been with small DD flotillas thus far.

And when it comes down to it, you can always use my philosophy...when in doubt, ATTACK! [:D]

Add in an old CL (Detroit like) to your DDs so you have some power in case you run into a TF with DDs as escorts. If you run into CVs with Vals they will hit the old CL and not the DDs, which you can afford to lose. In early 42 you are short DDs everywhere.

20th of January

Things are still very quiet. I´m guessing his is gathering his strength for the next jump!

I spotted KB again. This time NW of Pago Pago. I had reinforcements on its way just 2 days out but had to send them to the south instead. [:(] I have no clue how to counter this. He has effectively closed off Suva and Pago Pago for me. I guess I will just have to forget about them for now and divert the intended reinforcements to OZ instead. If this is an attempt to close off OZ it might very well have the reverse effect for him!

I will send some engineers and fuel to Tahiti and start building it up and set up a search chain around it.

I´m holding off any reinforcements to Wake for now. A supply convoy enroute there was spotted last turn. I diverted it North. This will be a good test to see how he reacts on that.

Oh, I also lost 2 subs repairing in Soerebaja. I had set up CAP trap over it but it failed to take off for no apparent reason...typically his Bettys flew in unescorted and his sweep arriving afterwards. [:(]

SOPAC

Action is here and I messed up badly last turn. I spotted what I believed was the KB (recon indicated several TKs, a CV and some BBs)due west of Canton Island so I tried to send in some troops to Pago Pago. It wasn´t the KB that I spotted though as it popped up this turn far South East of Pago Pago. This can cost me dearly! [:(] On those transports I have a CD unit, 2 fightergroups and a RGT. Crap!

I´m going to abandon the thought of reinforcing Suva and Pago Pago for now. If the troops doesn´t get sunk next turn they will head for OZ instead. Fiji will be build up.

The good news is that I also spotted the 2 CVLs that have been missing since the starting days! So I now know where both KB and MKB is. Surface forces and CVs immediately left to try and do some damage in CENTPAC. I think its a mistake having his carriers deep in SOPAC and a even bigger one to let me know they are there.

Thoughts concerning SOPAC
At first I was very annoyed with my inability to secure Suva and Pago Pago. But after giving it some thought I´m not that upset anymore. They are of course nice to have but not in any way critical. They will be easy to recapture later in 42. I´m also guessing he is burning a lot of fuel and accumulating SYS damage and OP losses in the KB. Flaunting the MKB with only 2 CVLs (where is Kaga?) on its own could mean an opportunity for me if he continues to do that.

Also the troops and fighters I was to send to Suva/Pago Pago/Noumea will now go to OZ instead. This will allow me to send more of the OZ/British troops to India. Using something like 8 divisions in Singers made me wonder if perhaps this SOPAC business is only a feint. I will be in deep trouble if those 8 divisions goes for India right after the fall of Singers. He will need KB for that though and I guess it will take him at least 2 weeks to move it there.

If you lose those troops and fighters it will suck, but if you split the TFs and run, I bet you won't lose all of any of the units/groups. He's far enough he may not have spotted you unless there is a sub in the area so won't be heading out flank speed.

I wouldn't ever bank on the KB being either out of fuel, out of sorties or accumulating damage. None of that matters if he's intent on hitting your transports and can find them. The key is making sure he doesn't find them.

I ofcourse didn´t think of spitting the TFs.

My only defense against the KB right now is as you say staying away from it. I´m trying to get a reliable search chain up so I can reroute my TFs if needed. I have a backup plan though that I will resort to if needed. Can´t really talk about that with you though! [:D]

Edit - I'm up for my morning coffee and ZERO turns in my inbox. [X(] I'll starting having the shakes and be unable to focus if I go more than 12 hours without a turn. Withdrawal symptoms are starting right now..... [:D]

Short update!

All TFs made it. [:)] But KB has vanished and I spotted what can only be an invasion force just off Nadi so I guess Suva is next. I have 150 AV with level 3.14 Forts there. Hopefully he didn´t bring enough the first time around. Every day stalled is a won day.

In China the war is on again. He just opened the door to Sian this turn wrecking 3 Corps in the process. I will loose it within 2 weeks. Next stop Lanchow and then game over in China!

I will try and post some maps later tonight or tomorrow.

Looks to me that rough terrain is not enough to hold off his tanks and artillery. I know Sian is important but it is in the open and you will lose a lot of troops trying to defend it. I would pull back into the mountains south of Lanchow and put blocking forces on the rough terrain east of Lanchow. Even if you can't get the fuel to Chunking, at least you deny it to him.

You might be right about Sian. But I need to hold it for atleast a week or so in order to get units between Sian and Lanchow. I have slated some 1200 AV to take position in the mountains.

To anyone else reading this I´m sorry updates ain´t coming as frequent as I had hoped to. My first child was due 3 days ago so its a waiting game at home. Also this time of the war has been written about a million times and probably not interesting to read about what BF goes were. So from now on and for some time forward I will only adress specific happenings and a more general "feel" of whats happening.

SOPAC
KB and Mini KB lingers around Suva. Now heading due west? The expected invasion of Suva didn´t happen. Might have been his oilers that are sure to follow KB around. I've abandoned all hope to reinforce Pago Pago and Suva. Troops are hiding around Fiji in their transports awaiting stronger escorts and onwards to OZ. Fiji will be my main base in SOPAC for now. Fuel is short everywhere.

CHINA
Still as mess [8|]. Trying to avoid getting a crapload of troops cut off. Not looking promising as can be seen in the above screenshot.

SRA
I had a nice little surprise planned for Joseph. But as is custom for me they fizzle. He had left 30 bomber and 50 transports without Fighter protection at Singkawang. I had my B17 set for the AF for 4 days but they rained in. He then moved some 50 fighters in and ofcourse the weather was clear the next day... figures.

Singers will probably fall very shortly. He came off with a 1:1 dropping the forts to 1. Only good news is that the larger forces are still mostly intact. But against 7 or so divisions its not much to do.

OZ/NZ
Forts are approaching 3 at most places.

India
The first defensive line is slowly starting to shape up. I will not build up too strongly though. Main effort is at Addu, Diego Garcia and Male. Karachi and Bombay. Here I will need to trade space for time if comes directly after Singers.

Thats all for now! [:)]
