Japanese Unit(s) surrounded at Koumac

that's it, we can now declare the operation of defending New Caledonia brought to a succesful end... the IJN pays for it losing several BB/CV plus other ships and the IJA lost 1 Div plus two Rgt...

another IJN BB was confirmed sunk today... looks like three dozen 1000lb bomb hits are enough to sink an IJN BB far away from a major port (even in Babes with reduced bomb effect)... Yamashiro also took a British torp IIRC...

Tsk, tsk, the counter-battery fire is off today. What's the supply situation at Clark?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

another day over Koepang with my B-17E vs a handful of Zeroes ending in another slaughter of my bombers... [8|] well, what can I say, 4E (especially B-17) sure are overpowered... yes, they really are, no doubt... that's why 8th Airforce lost the war over Germany because Germany had far better fighters than the Japanese... or how turned it out?

9 B-17 are shot down today, against a single Zero unit... guess what would have happened if we would have met three Zero units... if you wonder why I am even flying those attacks, I have to, as I am planning to bring stuff to Babar (east of Timor) to build a level 7 airfield there that will threaten Timor and the area around Ambon... my carriers, SAGs and amphib convoys are closing in and I want to knock out Koepang and Ambon before we actually start unloading at Babar... but looking at the B-17 losses, I just don't get what the JFB whining is about as my bombers are flown by the best of the best on the map and they still drop out of the sky like flies...

I really was careful with my bombers from day one to build up a force of 100 bombers plus around 50 in the pool, but only a couple of strikes against some Cap saw the pool being drained in no time and for what result? For no result as it takes 2000 bomber sorties like the ones today to actually close a level 5 airfield like Koepang for a couple of days... 2000 4E bomber sorties for one airfield? While having loss rates I just can't afford with a replacement rate of 15 per month...

to make everything worse, then it's time for some idiotic naval movement again... for what reason ever, only one squadron attacked but all squadrons changed their homeport from Bataan (1 hex from the target) to some frigin Allied base four hexes away which means the PT boat squadrons had to move through Lubang where another IJN DD squadron waits for them during daylight... flawed...

now that was quite confident... my carriers launch air strikes yesterday and Cuttlefish sends a convoy right into the area? Serious? This careless behaviour is only topped by the low number of aircraft my carriers launch to attack the troop convoy...

now what about that? have dispatched four destroyers to hunt down the troop transport that was attacked yesterday and while the destroyers failed to engage the convoy (gone today), they ended up patrolling the area during the day (thought we could catch the convoy, attack it and retire to Darwin afterwards) and draw an airstrike from IJN carriers? WOOOT? [X(]

Cuttlefish sees my carriers off Ambon yesterday while they attack a convoy and then he decides to move his remaining carriers into such a position? Is this bold or just desperate? Our carriers were enough to handle the IJN carriers around New Caledonia sinking three CV in the end and just a moment later the remaining IJN carriers are showing up near my massed carrier force? [&:]

I was thinking about pursuing the troop transport with my carriers but then decided a couple of DD would do the trick but I guessed wrong and the troop transport moved into the opposite direction... would I have decided to pursue with my carriers, the would have been in perfect strike distance to the IJN today, resulting in a potential disaster for the IJN as there can't be that many carriers left at the moment...

note that the Vals are now finally divebombing... the agile destroyers avoided all attacks except one Val that scored a hit...

while it could have been worse for the IJN if my carriers would have been in striking range, Cuttlefish still pays for it as one of my numerous subs operating in the area gets a shot at CV Hiyo and three out of four torps slam into the carrier... not sure if this is FOW or what, three torps and the ship is neither on fire nor heavily damaged while I would rate it sunk in real life after three torps hitting her...

RE: Continental Clash - Cuttlefish (J) vs castor troy (A)

Post by castor troy »

here's the situation... I decided against my carriers pursuing the enemy convoy due to my convoy arriving at Babar today so my carriers took position North of the island to cover the unloading... would I have pursued, my carrier group would have ended up exactly 6 hexes from the IJN carriers as I would have placed them two hexes North of Ambon...

will be interesting where damaged Hiyo is going now as she may well run into one more of my subs (all got working torps)... still don't get why Cuttlefish is taking such a risk... all airfields that could be a threat are reconned and none show any LBA buildup so it makes even less sense to operate his carriers so careless IMO...

the whole buildup in the area seems not to be going forward at all while it must be crystal clear for CF that this has just turned into the IJ's most important area after the defeat around New Caledonia that ended all expansion and has put the IJ into the defense...

Japanese Ships
CV Hiyo, Torpedo hits 2, heavy damage
DD Sanae

Allied Ships
SS S-18

Hiyo was moving where we expected her to move and S-18 being one of a couple of subs ordered to hunt her down spots the damaged carrier and fires a full spread of torps at the slow moving ship... torp hit number 4 and 5 now leave the carrier heavily damaged... once more I can only shake my head about only one DD escort for such a ship, we've already sunk a damaged CA with only one escort... while I am of course happy about hurting the enemy, sometimes I think it is just too easy due to the way the enemy is operating... [&:] the carrier still isn't sunk though, no carrier based ac show up on the ac loss list, moving in more subs trying to engage the carrier once more and finish her off if she isn't sinking already...

looking at the tracker ship losses, the three carriers and three BB sunk in the defense of New Caledonia show up as well as the two CVL sunk around Balikpapan earlier... still eight enemy heavy cruisers reported as being sunk... CV Hiyo could be the fourth carrier to show up on that list soon...total losses absolutely favour the Allied already, while we lead in number of ships sunk, the enemy took the lead in points for ships lost... our losses greatly result from all those ships starting in the SRA not being able to flee...
