which scenario is best as beginner?
Which scanario should I choose as a beginner, and what would be best as the next etc.?
RE: which scenario is best as beginner?
Scen. 004 Guadalcanal is a good start. Limited map scale....limited playing pieces. No economy to manage.
Ai is better as Allied. The game is tough for Japan side because of the historical conditions but it'll quickly introduce you to the basic mechanics of the game. Also makes a good PBEM starter.

Coral Sea - if you want to learn how the game works - basic principles with few units in several turns
Aleutians - try some amphibious invasion as allies
Guadalcanal - longer, here you can see some of the worngs/goods to really take effect in the long run.

RE: which scenario is best as beginner?
I recommend the following in order as a learning curve
1. Coral Sea for a taster just to look around
2. Battle of Burma as its air land only with limited units
3. 1000 mile war, Buccaneer or Return to Wake as they are all smal scale (or all of them)
4. Marianas (more units bigger scale) or Guadalcanal (more strategic depth)
Thats how I would learn

RE: which scenario is best as beginner?
All of these suggestions are perfect beginnings. I would however just load up a Scenario 1 Grand Campaign to see what happens on turn 1 as the Allies. It'll be very instructive to let it run with the AI playing Japan and then also to switch over to a hotseat game and look at both sides.
The AI isn't the best teacher for how things work in the long run, but if you just look at a few areas, see what the setting are and the results based on those, it helps get a feel for the complexity of things. Stick to a few ideas and questions at a time and learn how they work. Don't read through the manual but use it as reference. Also look a the many good starting guides on the forums.
Welcome and good luck!

Yep, I would have to agree with Andy Mac; I would suggest Scen 011 Battle of the Marianas for a starter.

Coral Sea is quite limited and not so overwhelming for a beginner.

Coral Sea- and imagine that you've just spent the last 12months (game and real time) in a PBEM carefully husbanding that force, micromanaging the pilot training and hand picking the TF commander- as the first torpedo (Kate) or 1000lb bomb (Dauntless) marks the beginning of the end for your proud TF [:(]

RE: which scenario is best as beginner?
I don't really consider myself a beginner (I still learn every day) but I enjoy the small scenarios when I am not in the mood to spend a lot of time on a grand campaign turn.
I recently started up a GCanal game and I am really enjoying it. I have also found new tricks and ideas that I was not aware of by just focusing on a small area, instead of the entire game. I sure am having a lot of fun with it.
GCanal and Marianas is a lot of fun, with a lot of action. Surface group action, carrier action, troop invasions, land based air, sub ops, and logistics. A lot packed into a little scenario. Great for all gamer levels. Marianas is especially fun... a LOT going on in without having the entire Pacific to worry about.
I am sure this has been said, but feel free to ask a lot of questions on the forumns and PM the regulars.. they're more than willing to help.

Life is tough. The sooner you realize that, the easier it will be.

Coral Sea first. Limited time frame, limited assets. Focus on naval air, land-based air, primacy of naval search and recon, naval ship combat: the meat and potatoes of this game (and the things this game does best).
For 'afters', I've done the 1000-mile war and it's not bad. This will give you a feel for (limited) amphibious OPs as the Allies and a healthy respect for the potential of IJNAF capabilities.
Never done Guadalcanal scenario before, so can't comment.
The Marianas campaign is long and arduous with tons of moving pieces. Not something I'd recommend for a beginner's first.
Enjoy!

First game.....
Grand Campaign as Allies, 1 day turns. It simulates the feel of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, and the situation of being placed in a new command.
Iam up to June '42.
After this, Grand Campaign as Japan, 1 day turns.

If you're a veteran war and computer gamer, there's no reason you couldn't just jump into a grand campaign. I'd recommend the Allies for a few months though, to get used to the interface, and when something goes wrong just assume that the cause was what you ordered - not the game being borked.
RE: which scenario is best as beginner?
Coral Sea for Naval/Air Ops.
Guadalcanal for logistics and Land combat.
Marianas for large-scale naval Ops and Amphib assaults.
Coral Sea can be done in 2 hours while the other ones can take a few weeks to play against AI.

Whole other critter. Undertaking to manage the Japanese economy is quite a daunting experience. Of course I would have it no other way.[:D]
