APOS STRATEGIC MAP - WALK THROUGH

Achtung Panzer:Operation Star is an Eastern Front wargame with solid graphics and sprawling battlefields that really emphasize the scope of WWII tank combat. The gameplay is a remarkably realistic turn-based and real-time operational/tactical hybrid wargame that continues the series begun by the acclaimed Achtung Panzer: Kharkov 1943.

SOME COMMENTS ABOUT THE GAME

I own and have played almost every serious war game ever made - table top and PC. I was also an Infantry Rifle Company Commander for much of my 10 years in uniform (1970s and 80s).

In my opinion, APOS comes closer than any other game I have yet played to representing the complex situational challenges of the WW2 battlefield. It is a superb game, limited only by a clunky interface and weak marketing, that every serious war gamer should definitely have in his or her stable.

APOS has clearly been designed by a team with a deep understanding of military tactics and a passion for realism and historical accuracy. I can't praise the game highly enough and I can only say to those of you who have not yet purchased it, or who gave up on APOS because the interface had you baffled, that you are missing out on the opportunity to experience and contribute to the finest WW2 simulation ever made.

I truly hope that the series continues to evolve and that the developers don't lose their way. What is badly needed is a better manual and tutorial, as well as a demo that shows off the game's best features and a UI that conforms to the norms most players are accustomed to. There really is no need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to UI layout and commands - focus development energies on AI logic (already impressive) and a strategic campaign layer, as well as further visual improvements.

I make my moves but avoid any further attacks for now as my troops are badly battered and the enemy is dug in and tenacious.

I have pulled the most badly damaged platoons back to the SW so that they will be able to take advantage of the supply and replacement units when they arrive.

I am pushing eastwards in an attempt to secure that third ford, but I realise that I might have left a gap in my lines on the left of the map.

What I desperately require is those Panzer platoons shown as 'arriving' on the map edge.

Feeling the pressure from Div HQ, I decide to execute a hasty attack off the march on West Pavlovka, using the Tiger's and Stugs that have just arrived, along with a battery of howitzers and some relatively fresh infantry.

So far, the Soviets have only been in possession of ATRs - if I hold my tanks back for direct fire support, there's a good chance that they won't be too exposed.

I have also pushed a single platoon along the northern bank of the river, partly for recon and also in the vain hope that this route might have been undefended. As you can see, there is evidence of enemy activity up there.

Next, I will press ENTER again to see what choices the AI makes.

Ironic it was the Russkies you were facing off against for 10 years that designed the game, redmarkus4 [:)]

I have all the Graviteam stuff, so to go offtopic for just a sec - what's your quick take on Tiller's Modern Battles series?

The AI opts to attack my advancing Pioneer units. As this will lead to an 'advance-to-contact' setting, my units will not be entrenched. Hopefully, they will only face infantry, but if the Soviets are introducing armor on this flank, there will be blood.

I will fight the Pavlovka battle first, since it involves Panzers and I do like my Panzers ;)

Actually, I wasn't in NATO - I was far away and the forces I trained with were 'non-aligned' but had ties to the Soviets as well as to western forces. My infantry training involved quite a lot of Soviet style tactics and I also trained with the Afghan Army in the 1980s.

I have some of the Squad Battles series although I haven't purchased the modern battles versions. They are good, but I have the following gripes:

1. Very dated graphics, particularly the '3D' or isometric views.
2. The AI seems quite limited at times.
3. The games I have played haven't evolved much over a number of years - hence my assumption that Modern Battles was merely more of the same.

What are your thoughts or recommendations?

The defenders spot my Tigers almost immediately (hardly surprising) and send up tank warning flares.

An artillery strike has been ordered against their positions.

Soviet tanks are reported behind the line of the village, screened from view. As there is no high ground available, I order my Panzers to reposition in order to engage should the Soviet tanks push into the village itself.

G'day Redmarkus4,

Excellent. I particularly like the tactical thought processes that you are describing here.
I have also pushed a single platoon along the northern bank of the river, partly for recon and also in the vain hope that this route might have been undefended. As you can see, there is evidence of enemy activity up there.

In your map screenshot of the above unit, it showed a tag of 'weakness +1%'. What's that?

Cheers,
Lancer
