I warned ElCid about this. Not cool shooting ferry boats.
With all due respect, that isn't a ferryboat! It is a schoner. In this period, schooners
- usually motorships using sails to make propulsion cheaper - were widely used. The first
US loss of the war was such a vessel - Cynthia Olsen. While they are civilians, they are not
ferries! Our ferries don't have sails in RHS - a clue!

Wanted another look at the 25kg bombs ElCid is using to suppress my troops in the open. We will see what happens to fortifications later.
Note that the NORMAL outcome of bombing is to DAMAGE squads. Here we see so many kills because
the squads - after many days of ground combat and air bombardment - are already disabled. When a
disabled squad takes a hit, apparently it becomes a killed squad.

South Central China quick look.
One would not nromally expect a unit with a value of 169 achieve 3:1 odds on
a unit with a value of 178 - even if the squad count is not an ideal model of the firepower
of units. I attribute this do a lack of supplies with the defending force. Also, the
19th Class C Brigade (Pack) was crossing a river - so it got a shock attack bonus.
It was a gamble, and I am surprised it worked. But one feature of an RHS pack unit
is that, while it is weaker in firepower than other units of its size (the artillery is always
only 75 mm) - it has more squads than any comparable unit - so it is better able to
survive attrition (say due to a failed shock attack).

RE: RHS 101 v 3 Test 4B: Midway Falls! Reprisals in Russia!
5 January, 1942
To: Foreign Minister, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
From: Foreign Minister, Empire of Japan
Re: Border incursions in the area of Manchukuo, Mongolia and Siberia
Minister:
I have been able to confirm all Japanese or Japanese Allied patrols have
left Outer Mongolia. However, one of these, upon entering Manchukuo,
reports a Mongolian or Russian unit on its left - at the NW tip of Northern
Manchukuo. This is the second incursion in a couple of days in this area,
and it is of concern. The patrol was directed to close in and identify the
details of the unit.
Lacking a response to my message of yesterday relative to the other unit
in Northern Manchukuo, I have not renewed my agreement with the War
Minister to continue to stand down. It is unclear if the tiny patrol in the are
can eject it or not - even with the support of an armored train - so additional
forces have been directed to move up in support, just in case. I regard your
failure to respond as a poor sign we actually have an agreement in place.
Also in North Manchukuo - to the East of this area - the Japanese patrol
which took a city in Siberia continues to withdraw. Because of the multiple
units ENTERING our territory however, it has been directed to do so in
combat order (which is to say, slowly, ready in case of trouble).
To the East and South there is an actual front and all reports are things are
quiet at last - a major improvement over the bloody battles of last week.
But I have determined there are two patrols actually on the Trans Siberian
RR in this area. Again, lacking a reply to my message of yesterday, I have
not directed them to leave. It seems to me that two Soviet Allied units in
Manchukuo and to Japanese Allied units in Siberia are a perfect balance.
I propose all four units be directed to withdraw. While it is possible the Soviet
units are already doing that, you have not said so. The moment you do say
so ours will withdraw.

RE: RHS 101 v 3 Test 4B: Russian armored division violates truce!!!
Bah humbug.
My airplanes hunt PT boats instead of enemy warships.
And the Russians seem to be invading in force down the
main rail line from the North. Never mind we nominally have
a deal in place. The only silver lining is that the Trans Siberian
is cut - and no sort of logistics ties Amur Province with Central
Siberia (unless perhaps it flies). Still - I simply do not know how
to manage this front? It is if Russian communists cannot be
trusted!

It is if Russian communists cannot be
trusted!

Re: Border Crisis
The vast distances and primitive communications in the Soviet Far East,
Mongolia and extreme Northern Manchukuo probably make it difficult to
completely understand what units are up to at any given time. The national
interests of the Soviet Union in a lack of hostilities at this time are so compelling that I have directed all aircraft to leave the most Northern air base in Manchukuo, and to
fly no missions other than recon in that area. In the Sea of Japan, I have allowed limited naval search and ASW patrols that remain close to Korean airspace - with
a view to confirming there are no Soviet or US submarines in the area before we consider allowing shipping to resume. In the South and East we continue to not allow any aircraft or even recon flights. The only patrol in Siberia in the Northern area reports it is 1600 meters (that is, one mile) from Manchukuo, so it will surely have crossed the line before you can read this. Another patrol - just returned from Mongolia - reporting a unit on its left - is directed to screen our Northern air base - but not to close with the unit even for identification purposes - which planes can do well enough. The "111th Armored Division" is reported to have hundreds of AFVs - so we have further directed the tripwire units on the border withdraw behind a river - where they will be backed up by a reinforced Class A division (with AAA and artillery attachments) - to insure the incursion does not continue down the rail line. Another Class A division is moving up to support if required. Two more Class A divisions are moving to the communications center of Harbin - to be available as required in any direction - North, East or South. Each is reinforced by heavy artillery regiments moving in company. These are rapid rail movements deep in the heart of Manchukuo - and precautionary - on the assumption your message of three days ago remains the foundation of Soviet Policy.

You cannot see it because it isn't here to see. It is up North, in China. It was based
in Manchukuo - and when created - just before this test began - I failed to change
its command assignment from Kwangtung Army. That is restricted and will NEVER
change - so it can NEVER get to Luzon in our game! You WILL see it in test 5B - which
just began - second turn in process now - and in test 6A - which is about to begin.
There - someone else will be doing the Japanese and I will get to look at the Allies in
great detail. But I will ask him to use the group somewhere.
Another problem here is that this is early days. IRL Japan had months to move heavy artillery
from Manchuria to Luzon - and I have not had the time - or the political points - or the situation
up North to dare send em. So much of the artillery that broke the back of at least 80,000 defenders
on Bataan in 20 minutes isn't here at all - it isn't just the absence of the HQ.

Actually - it was a test. If your logistics was as it might be - this location isn't well fed and there are lots of
troops - it might have fallen. And as it is - the damage won't be restored - and supplies are consumed. I have
some railroad units en route to here - and some full scale divisions too - so this is simply measureing the
opposition to gage where to send the heavy units? I expected to need them at other, larger cities nearby -
but they were not well defended - as they ought to be - since this is the main rail LOC of China. I want it
open - ships can't be torpedoed if you ship by rail!!

Actually it is. Right down to the almost worthless AFVs in it! Its only virtue is it
is fast. It has "machine gun tanks" - tankettes - and some infantry and small heavy
weapons - not very impressive:
59 x "machine gun tank or armored car" device 1416
24 x 81 mm Brandt Mortars device 1409
8 x 50 mm Krupp Mountain Guns device 1410
12 x Thai Vickers Tanks device 1413
18 x Thai motorized squads device 1404
12 x 2.5 ton truck sections (4 each)
106 x Motorized Support squads
It is king of the Jungle - and king of a SE Asia with colonial and local forces devoid
of AT weapons as well as most heavy weapons - but not impressive as armored units go -
not even armored battalions.

In RHS the ROC army is an actual army. This is merely a modest concentration - but
a good one - and will be defeated by killing its logistical foundation - not by a coup de main
alone
