Naval warfare

Gary Grigsby’s World at War is back with a whole new set of features. World at War: A World Divided still gives complete control over the production, research and military strategy for your side, but in this new updated version you’ll also be able to bring spies into the mix as well as neutral country diplomacy, variable political events and much more. Perhaps the largest item is the ability to play a special Soviet vs. Allies scenario that occurs after the end of World War II.

Naval warfare

Post by Cheesehead »

Hi

I just bought the game and I'm working through the rules. Under 8.6.1 Surface ship combat it says [regarding the random range that naval combat takes place at] "the range will be reduced so that at least one ship is in range and can fire (ie. if only light fleets are involved and range is 3 is selected by the computer, the range will be reduced to 2, if only carrier fleets are involved the range will be reduced to 1)"

This doesn't make sense to me... shouldn't carriers be able to engage at 3? And shouldn't light fleets only be able to engage each other at 1?

Is this just a misprint?

Thanks

John

I don't have the game in front of me, but IIRC each type of fleet has a range which they can engage at. This is surface combat, not impacting the aircraft in the area which fights in a different way, so my guess is we made carriers range 1 because most/all only have light AA guns, while light fleets represent cruisers with 8 inch guns and thus a range of 2 while heavy fleets have a range of 3 due to their larger guns.
All understanding comes after the fact.

OK, that would make sense. Do Carriers have a chance at engaging surface ships outside of surface range? I don't see that in the rules anywhere.

Thanks
