More help for a not so new noob

Post by rroberson »

So yeah I can tell I have been away for a while. I am attempting to redownload the base game from the matrix site. Only I cant find the actual place to download the base game. I have poked around in the members only area but the only downloads there I have been able to find are patches and the full planning map. I know digital river runs this but beyond the store link I can't find where my online games storage exists. Any help would be appreciated :-).

Sorry about this guys...getting back into the swing of things is a slow painful process.

I wish I could help, but my install is from the disc. I only have to download the patches - and have a copy of these on a disc as well. Good luck and welcome back!

Yeah, I think you're going to have to have somebody from matrix pop in. You might change the title to something like "Jwilkerson - Your order of a year's supply of Viagra has been delayed." That should get his attention (if not everyone else's [;)])

Are you still having problems? If so, send Erik Rutin and email/pm. He usually responds quickly.

Crisis averted as I have found the original disk packed away in a box. That being said. It should be a lot easier to download the game from digital river. Too many hoops to get to or update the product I own has long been my complaint with Matrix and one of the reasons why I dont purchase as many games from them as I otherwise might.

I had exactly the same problem several months ago. We had moved house and I could not find my copy of AE. I could find everything else of course. The problem is that Matrix no longer use Digital River as suppliers, they use someone else.

So if your purchase from Digital River is more than two years old from Digital River, you have a problem. Fortunately for me the Help desk staff ( I think his name was Christian ), bent over backwards to sort it out for me. I have since rediscovered my hardcopy of the game and manual, but I would urge new players to purchase the hardcopy version of any product on line, as companies change hands/go out of business/merge etc.

( I've never understood why people buy their books in this way....
5 years down the line and their Kindle expires...imagine trying to get access to all those companies who have gone out of business/changed hands to get your books redownloaded....NIGHTMARE!![:@] ) You never know what is around the corner.

Its all just style over substance.

BUY HARDCOPY'S

( gets off soapbox )

Warning:- The above must be read with a pinch of salt.

You don't have to buy hard copies, just make them. After downloading make several copies and store them in different locations.
I think that the two obligations you have are to be good at what you do and then to pass on your knowledge to a younger person

After umpteen messes up of 'good old windows' (sarcasm intended) and having to reinstall everything again and again I now have the following method.

I have one install of AE - windows is happy as long as it is installed - doesn't matter which version. I have this in multiple storage places round the house and elsewhere (yes I am paranoid). I have a copy of a freeware programme called FreeFileSync. I have this set up to copy any files changed in any of my games to a cloud store (I use Dropbox). I run this after each move I make. This means that should Windows require yet another reinstall I have to simply install form the original AE then just run the reverse process with FreeFileSync and its all back - a no brainer.

As long as I remember to make a couple of clicks after each turn is doen I am pretty much 99.99999999999% safe.

What Dan Nichols said. There is actually no reason at all to buy a hardcopy. Just burn it to a disc or store it like I do on two seperate removable discs. Or do as Roger and use Dropbox which is exellent for just a few bucks a month.

My PC died violently last year (like a CV hitting the sea bed [;)]) and i lost the lot , not having AE disks i was in a similar position as my code was stored on the PC .. E-mailed support and they were very helpful and gave me a new link to get the game D/L .. worth a try if your still looking.

good luck RRoberson and nice to see you again

sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit :)

I just keep the installation file on my hard disk after downloading and installing. That makes it easy to install again if there is corruption.

Then I keep a copy of the installation file on my backup disk in case my computer dies

Then I keep a copy of the installation file on a thumb drive stored in the cabinet in case lighting fries everything

Then I keep a copy of the installation file on a thumb drive at the bank in case the house burns down

Then I do the same thing with every patch file just in case the Matrix servers die.

I used to copy to CDs as well but it was so much trouble that I decided not to worry about massive EMP frying the thumb drives

That guy Christian is a cool guy. He's helped me before when I forgot how to access my games (it's tricky and tough for geezers to remember every couple of years). Matrix truly has good support.
