BISNC Ships Itaura, Ikauna and Itria

Post by Kereguelen »

Hi,

does somebody know anything about the ships mentioned in the header?

I only know that they were build in the UK in 1940/41 for BISNC and served in Indian waters, but not much else. Were they pre-fabricated (PF) ships (Ocean-Type or similar)?

Many Thanks!

K

Itaura

Ikauna

Itaura and Ikauna (and I believe two others) built by W.Gray & Co, Hartlepool. 442' (loa), 426' (lpp), about 6797 GRT, 6128 Under Deck, 3670 NRT, Triple expansion with a LP turbine and DR gearing. All very similar except Itria (and I believe one other) was built by Barclay, Curle & Co, Glasgow and had minor cosmetic differences. Had same loa but an extra foot on perps, 427' (lpp) giving 6845 GRT, 6147 Under Deck. Same engines. 12 knots.

Both builders built similar ships for Clan Line, couple of which were snagged by MOWT and put in the Warrior name series. Not pre-fabbed but you could call them a kinda-sorta standard design. Itria is marked as "Class Contemplated" by Barclay, Curle. Top picture is Itria, then Ikauna, then Itaura. Darn similar except for stack and deckhouse details. Hope this helps.

Darn it, that Bowen fellow beat me to it. [;)]

I'm sure I speak for Don as well, but you are welcome. To anything we have or can find.

Ciao. John
