RHS 101 v 3 Test 4B: The fall of Zamboanga

Post by el cid again »

This "AAR" is mainly going to be a collection of combat reports, with occasional comments
from the Japanese point of view - or from a designer point of view. Paul will do a more
developed AAR - he has something like the 4th most popular AAR of all time and is good at it.

Here my objective is to test all the new units, devices, aircraft and ships in RHS, with a view to
understanding how well they work or impact various issues? I will run a somewhat traditional
Japanese campaign - but at a higher operational tempo - and a focus on evaluating the impact
of adding historical airmobile assets, riverine assets, and other things. For example - we have
armored trains - and the Schneider rail gun - and I want to see how well they work?

Here I paid the political points cost to relieve Vice Admiral Nagumo with Vice Admiral Ozawa -
in my view a better leader and in any case the one who concieved of the Kiddo Butai concept.
It is my intention to sustain the KB raid until aircraft attrition or ship casulaties force it to end.
To that end I have divided the tanker force - prepositioning it in two different places - to create
operational options. [One set of 4 tankers is North of Oahu - the other between Midway and
Wake]

In Malaya, I decided not to land on Kota Bahru - but rather at Patani and march overland to it.
The port size is the same - so it will unload as fast - but lacking defense - there is not the risk
of losing ships - or troops embarked on them. This is a typical Japanese strategy anyway.
Even so, look for a very fast campaign in Malaya - particularly if Paul does not reinforce as the
Allies historically did. I am a Yamashita fan - so he commands - and I will use his combined
army concepts - and usually that works superbly well.

In Luzon, I decided to concentrate on landing at San Fernando - a better port than other places -
and also an airfield. Also to take Baguio City (present only in RHS) with airborne - to get its
airfield and supplies and resources - and its malaria free place for troops to recover from exposure
to malaria hexes. Two landings in the South - not at the very end of the penninsula - should speed
things up as well.

I am more interested in resource generating Ocean Island than in Tarawa - so I take it first - but will
take everything in the area in due course.

I am preparing a fleet and an army to engage in the Northern Area - but it is just assembling now.
We will evaluate the impacts of winter ice - and summer open river navigation - in this game.

Ghost Submarine

Let me guess, is this is a sub which has very high durability (i.e. indestructible) yet whose torpedos do no damage? Available to both sides but possibly moreso to the Allies?

If that's right, then what a great idea. Except they ought to just appear randomly rather than be under player control. That is impossible though.

Are you providing this mod for download? I don't have time to play it but would be very interested in looking at it.

The captain is an astute observer:

the Ghost submarines are meant to fool players - they have even fooled me and I created them - into "going around" when a sub symbol is on the map - or into not sailing to avoid the risk - as well as to make escorts waste ASW ammo on false targets.

As such both sides have them. But the Allies have far more than the Japanese do. There are American, British and Japanese flavors. They indeed have high durability, and their torpedoes (named "false torpedo track") have zero effect. They carry something like 60 torpedoes and have a fantastic range, but need very little fuel when they come back to port. A new one appears periodically - every month for the Allies - every quarter for the Japanese - and the Allies tend to get one US on one side of the map and one UK on the other side - until halfway through 1945.

This is an experiment - there are not enough to represent all false targets theater wide. But I didn't want to bog things down too much for an experiment.

Ghost subs should be set to "computer control" unless they (a) appear in a port and need to be sent to a new patrol area - or (b) are so damaged they must be managed in re repairs. In either case - send em where you wish - and then turn em loose under computer control again.

They combine with the rather limited number of ASW shots in RHS to be a problem for the other side. A bad ASW ship typically has only three "shots" - a good one will have on the order of a dozen - and late in the war - a dozen of two different kinds (ahead throwing weapons and DC). Regardless - wasting shots is not welcome when you have a long ocean trip ahead. But it happens a LOT. As late as the Falklands war, 200 ASW attacks were made - but only once was there really a submarine present! Almost "every piece of ASW ordnance in inventory" was expended in these false attacks! Bad as it was, RN in 1981 had far better sensors and theory than anybody did in WWII.

I am pleased Sid has brought RHS to AE. I really enjoy the allied trigger that can be pulled if the Manchurian army is purchased for china operations. The russian far east front is active in this game. My problem will be to hold back the leash.

I understand Sid has modified the allied economy where my transports will have to return resources to enable my supply production.
I will have to study the allied production issues.

We started this game w/ no discussion of house rules. Frankly, I dont even know the game settings.

I have requested Sid to allow us a joint AAR. I want to read his thoughts also. Sid said ok and suggested I overlook his strat planning.
ElCid,
Regarding House rules:
I think there was a listing of them in one of my transmissions

They are all logical

RR Units stay on RR tracks! Go figure. Russia has many. But the US has two - one on Hawaii - so it won't be moving unless you move it - but you could! [It has 8 inch rail guns - and old 12 inch CD mortars as reserve - they are in storage - shown as "damaged" you can repair up.] There is another that appears in a few days (I think - it may be there already) at Fort Lewis (Tacoma, Washington) - with two big 12 inch CD guns - to defend Aberdeen Hoquiam. Canada gets one in 1942 - to defend its rivers - which can be invaded - two of em - but one has a RR beside it.

Japan has three trains per se - and the peculiar first independent artillery company - with a 12 inch Schneider rail gun.

One optionally might restrict rail units to their gage of RR - but it is up to you. One can do things about gage - lay a third rail or move the road wheels on the axle. Japan has rail trucks that can drive on ANY gage in its RR engineer units - not in the game.

You have some special things not vsible. Kennicot is an abandoned town and copper mine - in Alaska - and the RR to it is viable (was until 1962 Earthquake dropped a span on the "million dollar bridge"] IF you send engineers to Kennicot - and IF you turn on supplies there - you could repair up the "damaged" resources and export em via the RR to the sea - which has a port.

Whittier is a similar dot location - a potential deep water port that never freezes - but it is "damaged" = not yet built. It is North of Seward - near Anchorage.

In the far North of Canada there are ports and ships in em - and resources - uranium, lead, zinc. They connect in summer to the OCEAN via a big river - also you can go between the lakes. Or the enemy might invade. More useful - the Yukon River is a big waterway in summer - connecting all the way past Whitehorse to the sea by Bethel.

There are similar rivers in Russia - four of em. And the Lake Baikal system is separate and closed - never open to the sea - but you have amphibs and transports on it. There is an actual riverine navy on the Amur - with Russian gigantic 6 inch gunboats the stronger hand. It was used to invade Manchukuo in 1945.

Rivers are important to logistics in China, India, Burma, Thailand - permitting faster movement of troop than by RR - and controlled movement of supplies and such - and all of em have river craft. The US Army gets actual warships on the Irrawaddy in 1945 - the only US Army warships in commission anywhere. But the Upper Mekong has no ships (unless someone creates landing craft of AI assigns an unassigned ship there) - and it is isolated from the sea by waterfalls and rapids in Cambodia - preventing French dreams of a "highway into China" from being practical. There is a RR around the falls - too small to represent as such - but we get the job done with roads.

The ALCAN will appear over time - the Bengal and Assam RR will upgrade to main line - and so will the Whitehorse and Yukon. A tiny one hex RR appears at New Caledonia early in the game - connecting LaFoa and Noumea. And the RR to China from Burma - really begun - will build if you want it. So will the "second death RR" on Sumatra - it really opened on the day the war ended - and not one train ever used its full length! But had the war gone longer - it expoted coal from the "wrong side" of the island to near Singapore. The Burma-Siam RR also builds up mid war.

The main rule is - if you don't think a historical commander would do it - don't do it.

This is a screen Print(SP) of the ghost sub in action. Not sure it is a good thing for all the TFs in the area to be seen in the replay. I ask Sid was the ship side really penetrated?

The "ship's side penetrated" is a "feature" of code - and what it probably really means is "assuming the weapon has
effect, the routine involved is involked" - but since effect = zero - no impact occurs in the "physical" sense (if anything
in a computer game can be said to be physical). However - there are "soft" effects - on AI willingness to plot a course -
it evades the location. The message can be rationalized to mean someone panicked when they thought they saw something
or heard something - or really did see or hear something and jumped to conclusions. Ghost submarines "look like"
US fleet boats, RN submarines or Japanese submarines - depending on the model. They are designed to be hard to kill,
cheap to build or service, and under "computer" control unless (a) they just appeared and need to be assigned a "patrol area"
or (b) damaged and need to be sent to a repair facility.

Actually - this was an invasion covering force now attempting to join the light carrier force. That force - composed of CVLs, CVEs and CVSs,
is still in the process of assembly - a group of three en route from Japan - and two CVSs with these ships first had to offload their invasion troops -
which they did - on Southern Luzon. It was not intended to fight - and I am not too happy to have expended 8 inch shells and torpedoes for such a minor target: Now they are not available for a real fight.

It is unusual for an attack I designed to see three battleships sunk
or for there to be zero Japanese plane losses.

It may be exaggerated - ships sunk lists no battleships for example.
Or intelligence is imperfect - which I like.

I focused on shutting down the main air base - being in close makes it a threat.
Now it is safer to harvest ships and planes.

The Pete is hard to model - it even was successful as a fighter! But a float dive bomber is the best compromise. It allows
its main function - search - as well as attacks - and the Pete was pretty impressive in that respect. Interestingly, it is in the
tradition of Dave - which also is a dive bomber when attacking - because it was pretty good at that. I use the Pete mainly as
an ASW plane or a search plane in the early war period - but here there were many - including two CVSs with full squadrons -
and many others on cruisers - so I assigned ONE squadron to attack. Rarely I also use em to do ground attack or port attack.

The intent was to move troops away from the border - as a non threatening move - and I figure recon is fair - with the risk of being shot down and all. I have anti-recon traps set over major bases - and hope to bag some if they come.

Russian ships going to sea are a problem - AI assumes they are the enemy - not knowing Russia is "neutral" - and they will automatically be engaged.
To do that safely requires a pre arranged protocol. However, to minimize the chance of international crises I set ranges so only recon and ASW might be an issue - bombers fall short of Russian territory. I figure a smart Russian will put subs and patrol craft one hex to seaward -- to detect and resist invasions - and consider those hexes "territorial waters" - and don't allow bombers to reach them either.

The word "China" in the China Pack C Brigade name tells us it is a special formation for the war in China.
Pre dating the war in the Pacific, and differing significantly from late war Class C formations, these units
were demi-divisions. Each brigade had four independent infantry battalions - complete with a slice of artillery and
engineers - intended to operate independently if needs be. Only two brigades formed a "division" - and there
was minimal divisional support - what there was already being divided up among the battalions. Pack means
the unit has either mule pack trains - or manpack trains - in support - not the customary draft wagons or trucks.
RHS models the true size of a unit by adding these support elements - at least in size - and cost to feed them.
Pack units tend to be harder to lift - but lower in firepower - than draft - which in turn are harder to lift - but
lower in firepower - than motorized (or semi-motorized).
