US and Philippine Artillery 1941

Post by Don Bowen »

For anyone interested in such things, there is an excellent post in another forum at:
http://www.network54.com/Forum/594514/m ... ine+Armies

Here is the meat of it:

U.S. = U.S. Army, including Philippine Scouts; P.A. = Philippine Army

M1916 37mm infantry gun: ON HAND 56 U.S., 9 P.A.; REQUIRED 26 U.S., 9 P.A.; EXCESS 30 guns in U.S. inventory

M3 37mm antitank gun: ON HAND 9 U.S.; 0 P.A.; REQUIRED 164 U.S., 617 P.A.; SHORTAGE 155 U.S., 617 P.A.

M1A2 37mm antiaircraft gun: ON HAND 66 U.S.; 0 P.A.; REQUIRED 96 U.S., 144 P.A.; SHORTAGE 30 U.S.; 66 P.A. [likely a typo, when 144 P.A. meant]

M1917 & M1917A1 (NOT broken down) 75mm field gun: ON HAND 134 U.S., 40 P.A.; REQUIRED 174 U.S., 360 P.A.; SHORTAGE 40 U.S., 320 P.A.

M1897A- 75mm antitank gun on half-track (then termed self-propelled mount or SPM): ON HAND 50 U.S., 0 P.A.; REQUIRED 50 U.S., 0 P.A.; REQUIREMENTS MET.

M1A1 75mm pack howitzer: ON HAND 0 U.S., 0 P.A.; REQUIRED 19 U.S., 0 P.A.; SHORTAGE 19 U.S., 0 P.A.

Vickers-Maxim 2.95-inch mountain GUN: ON HAND 12 U.S., 56 P.A.; REQUIRED 0 U.S., 0 P.A.; EXCESS 12 U.S., 56 P.A. [ironically and sadly the guns the U.S. and P.A. forces largely DID fight with]

M3 3-inch antiaircraft gun: ON HAND 62 U.S., 0 P.A.; REQUIRED 70 U.S., 92 P.A.; SHORTAGE 8 U.S., 92 P.A. [Nota bene: the shortage was intended to be largely filled with the new M1 90mm antiaircraft gun, a shipment never sent.]

M2 105mm field howitzer: ON HAND 0 U.S., 0 P.A.; REQUIRED 48 U.S., 72 P.A.; SHORTAGE 48 U.S., 72 P.A.

M1917/M1918 155mm field howitzer, high-speeded: ON HAND 2 U.S., 0 P.A.; REQUIRED 34 U.S., 48 P.A.; SHORTAGE 32 U.S., 48 P.A.

M1917/M1918 155mm field gun: ON HAND 42 U.S., 24 P.A.; REQUIRED 55 U.S., 36 P.A.; SHORTAGE 13 U.S., 12 P.A. [Nota bene: it appears that all or most of the shortage was intended to be filled with the new M1 155mm field and coast gun.]

M3 light tank (37mm gun): ON HAND 109 U.S., 0 P.A.; REQUIRED 108 U.S.; 0 P.A., EXCESS 1 U.S., 0 P.A. [Nota bene: the excess vehicle MAY have been a command tank, because I have seen war footage showing an M3 passing by without a 37mm gun in its turret.]

Don -

You never cease to amaze me with your ability to take some small facet of the Philippines Campaign and reveal the fascinating story behind it!

Thank You for the reference. Of course I am an Artillery kind of guy...<grin>

Me too, Mac. Don does that to all the time. He's the guy that sucked me into working on WiTPAE. He really is the Great One. There are no words to express how much this game owes to Don Bowen.

At least none repeatable in polite company...

But thanks guys. It's all 'cause of my cousin Jimmy (Pvt James Castle, B Battery, 60th CA, Corregidor 1941-42) and father (MSgt A.C. Bowen, 1st Quartermaster Depot, Luzon, 1945).
