AI JFB Cry Like Little Girl

Post by Bullwinkle58 »

Tokyo fell today.

Took until March 1946, a lot of bombing, but no direct in-hex Soviet support. At the beginning of the seige the Japanese had 789,000 troops in the hex, over 5000 guns, about 1200 AFVs, Forts 9, with 500,000 supplies. On the last day 294 Japanese LCUs retreated southwest. This is what the biggest AE battle I've ever fought looked like as it ended.

To my Allied comrades bogged down in the mud and malaria of 1942: Courage!
---------------------------------------------------------

Mr. Moose, GC or Downfall?

Congratulations![&o]

GC, Scenario 2, about 70% played on 1-day turns.

The Soviets are simply amazing in their strength. They knock over 70,000 man garrisons with zero prep, no air support, in one day in many cases. And I still have much of their arty out of position and not with the armor and Guards divisions.

congrats......well done. I finished one GC against the AI about 3 or 4 years. But the best Ive done so far in pbem is around Sept 43(thru in the towel getting my butt kicked). How did the AI work overall long term. I ask because there has been more patches done since I played thru.

Better than I did playing the AI. My game finished in May 46 with me still trying to take Tokyo, but I didn't allow any Russians to take part in my little Japanese adventure. [:)]

OK, so you got Tokyo. Now you are going to have to split it up into a British sector, a Soviet sector and a US sector. And...sooner or later you know those f**king Reds will put a wall up...[;)]

I would like to play PBEM and display all my bad habits, but I can't commit to the kind of schedule PBEM players demand. I don't organize my evenings around AE. If I had a close, especially a local, friend who would be OK with tossing a turn or two a week on a very irregular schedule I might try it, but I won't commit to it every night or anything close. I play other games and I do other things. I'm not at my first anniversary yet! [8D]

I'm thinking strongly of trying a Japanese AI game though, maybe with a Babes Lite Allied one in parallel. You should take a shot at playing the bad guys.

The AI did pretty well. I followed only a modified historical path. Did the DEI and PI, but not the Marianas, Marcus, or the Bonins. Went into the HI through the northern route, but spent a lot of time tying down all of Sakhalin Island before tackling Hokkaido. Sakhalin I. is a great jumping off point. Far better than any of the small islands, a fuly-defended rear with the Soviets, and a good, safer route to resupply than some of the more southern Kuriles.

I also, as always, focused on denying oil and fuel to the HI, and at the end the AI was flat on HI stores, and had to leave its ships in port fuel-bound where they were meat for the B-29s. I sank more carriers at the pier than at sea. For the first time I took and used Palembang for in-theater fuel and was surprised at how massive it is in actual use. I had seen the numbers but not how many tankers could actually drink there. Any Japanese players who try to get by without it have my respect. I could easily suck Balikpapan and Soerjaba dry, but not Palembang.

The AI also uses massive, and I mean massive, kamis, far more than any human I've ever seen. In that I think the humans are making a big mistake. At the end the AI was still throwing junk like Willows at me, and getting a few hits. Earlier, when it had multi-engine front-line airframes, I lost hundreds of ships. Kamis don't need air HQs and expensive torpedoes to do their business either. I'm going to be interested to see how much the dual-purpose flak gun changes in DaBabes change this dynamic.

The Soviets I used to seal off Kyushu's supply from flowing east, as well as to take Hiroshima and Kobe/Osaka, but they didn't take part in the actual Tokyo siege. Of course, the whole HI was pretty supply-starved by the end. I also bombed Tokyo's LI production down to 10 from something like 2000, and isolated it hex-side-wise. The siege took about six weeks with me feeding in new units as they arrived. The siege of Singapore took about as long, but with a lot less armor and bombing. OTOH, Singers had 120,000 defenders, not 789,000.

Nope. I have three more weeks until engine shut-down. I'm taking Yokohama at least, and there's one more pesky Chinese city hex the Japanese just don't want to leave . . .

I'm also role-playing a little, standing down backwater units on Rest, sending planes home, sending all the subs for an orgy in Honolulu. You know, the usual victory dance. [:)]

I've been neglecting WitE. They just did ANOTHER massive patch, changing all sorts of things. It's a bit tiring, and not as engaging as AE.
